SAVANNAH,
Ga. — The Kutztown University baseball
team took an 8-3 lead, but couldn’t hold on as California (Pa.)
rallied back for a 14-10 win Thursday at the Savannah Invitational.
Chad
Lightcap (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown), who
went 2-for-3 in the game, hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the
seventh inning to give the Golden Bears (5-9) a 10-9 lead, but
California’s Ryan Yost and Robert Hedrick hit back-to-back homers in
the bottom half of the seventh to give the Vulcans (4-3) the lead
for good.
KU used a six-run
fifth, fueled by a two-RBI double from Jeff Kistle (r-fr.
Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny), to build an 8-3 lead, but two runs
in the bottom half of the fifth and a grand slam by Stephen Hermann
in the sixth knotted the game up at 9-9.
Nole
Saylor (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown) finished
3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Both Matt
Kulbacki (so. Hershey/Hershey) and Mark Renda (r-fr.
Lansdale/North Penn) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Garrison
Rausch (sr. Allentown/Parkland) started
for the Golden Bears, allowing nine runs on 12 hits. He struck out
nine.
KU will square off
against California again at 10 a.m. Friday. The Golden Bears will
then close out the Savannah Invitational with a contest against
Fairmont State at 2 p.m. KU won 16-7 on Tuesday against Fairmont
State.
Golden Bears head
coach Chris Blum needs just one win to reach 200 for his career at
KU.
