KU sweeps West Chester, clinches playoff spot

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University baseball team swept West Chester Saturday at North Campus Field to clinch a berth into the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs.

KU will wait for the outcome of Sunday’s doubleheader between Bloomsburg and Mansfield to figure out whether it will be the No. 2 or No. 3 seed in the Eastern Division. Millersville clinched the No. 1 seed in the East.

The Golden Bears will return to the field for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Sunday at Wilmington (Del.). The non-conference games will close out the regular season for KU.

GORSKI PITCHES KU TO 8-2 WIN OVER WEST CHESTER

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Darin Gorski (so. Mount Joy/Donegal) picked up his eighth win of the season and the Golden Bears’ offense made it easy, as KU won 8-2 in the first game of their doubleheader with the Golden Rams at North Campus Field.

Darin Gorski

Gorski pitched his sixth complete game, limiting West Chester to two runs — one earned — on four hits and four walks. He had eight strikeouts.

At the plate, KU was led by Corey Buletza (fr. St. Clair/Pottsville), who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Chad Lightcap (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) also had a big game, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored.

Lightcap’s three RBIs came on one hit, a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the second when KU plated six runs.

Buletza, Garrison Rausch (sr. Allentown/Parkland), Nole Saylor (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown) and Brett Wigder (fr. Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) hit consecutive singles to start the second inning. Saylor’s hit brought home Buletza for the 1-0 lead.

Lightcap followed with his three-RBI double, and Mike Kacelowicz (so. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) doubled him home to make it 5-0.

James Quigley (fr. Bensalem/Bensalem) made it three straight doubles with his hit down the right-field line, scoring Kacelowicz for the 6-0 lead.

West Chester cut it to 6-1 with a solo homer from Connor Thorp in the top of the fourth, but KU countered in the bottom half with two runs. Buletza doubled in Quigley and scored when Wigder reached on an error.

The Golden Rams tacked on an unearned run in the top of the sixth.

GOLDEN BEARS HOLD ON TO WIN 8-6, CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Golden Bears held off a late Golden Rams’ rally to win 8-6 and complete their doubleheader sweep Saturday at North Campus Field.

Buletza led the Golden Bears again, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Lightcap and Kacelowicz each scored two runs for KU, which jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings and 8-0 after five.

West Chester, however, posted three in the sixth and another three in the seventh before Philip Rummel (sr. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) got Brandon Wolfe to line out to first base for the final out.

Derick Reis (sr. Jim Thorpe/Jim Thorpe) started for KU, pitching 5 1/3 innings. He held West Chester to two runs on four hits and one walk. He struck out four.

Quigley, who went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, singled in Kacelowicz to give KU the early 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Jared Frey (so. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) singled in Wigder to move the score to 2-0, and on Buletza’s RBI single that plated Lightcap, Quigley came home on a throwing error to make it 4-0.

KU scored four runs in the fifth inning, led by Buletza’s two-run double. Scott Kacelowicz (so. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) and Rausch also had RBI singles in the inning.
