Wilmington holds
off KU's late rally, wins 8-6 at North Campus Field

KUTZTOWN, Pa. —
The Kutztown University baseball team rallied in the ninth but
came up short, falling 8-6 to Wilmington University (Del.) Friday at
North Campus Field.
The Golden Bears
(7-10) scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying
run on base, but Wilmington pitcher Clint Kuhl got Nole Saylor (fr.
Boyertown/Boyertown) to ground out to end the game.
Wilmington (4-11)
took a 1-0 lead with a solo home run from Drew Anusky in the top of
the second, but KU countered in the bottom half, scoring three run
so for the 3-1 lead. Matt Kulbacki (so. Hershey/Hershey) led
off the inning with a solo homer to left field and Jared Frey
(so. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley), who singled with one out,
scored on a single from Mike Kacelowicz (so. Orwigsburg/Blue
Mountain). Kacelowicz was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run
scored.
With Chad
Lightcap (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) at the plate and the bases
loaded, Wilmington’s catcher was called for catcher’s interference,
plating Michael Dugan (r-fr. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City).
Both Frey and
Lightcap had three hits in the game. Frey was 3-for-5 with two RBIs
and a run scored, while Lightcap was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Wilmington bounced
back after KU’s three-run second inning to score four in the top of
the third.
Brian Testa led off
the inning with a home run to left center, and KU starting pitcher
Darin Gorski (so. Mount Joy/Donegal) allowed the next four
batters to have free passes — one hit batter, who was caught
stealing, and three straight walks.
Matt Umba drove on
run in with his fielder’s choice and Mike Wilson knocked in two more
with his double to right field to make it 5-3.
Lightcap made it to
5-4 in the bottom of the fourth, singling in Kacelowicz, who tripled
to start the inning.
Wilmington added
two runs in the eighth and another in the ninth to make it 8-4
heading into the bottom of the ninth, where a two-out, two-run
single from Frey cut the Golden Bears’ deficit to 8-6.
Dugan, who went
2-for-4, made it back-to-back singles by beating out the throw to
first on his grounder to shortstop, but Wilmington forced Saylor’s
groundout to end the game.
Gorski pitched 6.2
innings for KU, striking out nine and allowing five runs on seven
hits and four walks.
Wilmington’s
Anthony Cimabue picked up the win, pitching six innings and allowing
four runs — three earned — on nine hits and three walks.
KU will play again
at 3 p.m. on Monday at the University of the Sciences. The Golden
Bears will host the University of the Sciences at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday
for a game that was originally scheduled for Saturday as a
doubleheader, but pending inclement weather forced the postponement
of the contest.
