Wilmington holds off KU's late rally, wins 8-6 at North Campus Field

March 21, 2008

Wilmington University (Del.) 8, Kutztown 6
BOXSCORE

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University baseball team rallied in the ninth but came up short, falling 8-6 to Wilmington University (Del.) Friday at North Campus Field.

The Golden Bears (7-10) scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run on base, but Wilmington pitcher Clint Kuhl got Nole Saylor (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown) to ground out to end the game.

Wilmington (4-11) took a 1-0 lead with a solo home run from Drew Anusky in the top of the second, but KU countered in the bottom half, scoring three run so for the 3-1 lead. Matt Kulbacki (so. Hershey/Hershey) led off the inning with a solo homer to left field and Jared Frey (so. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley), who singled with one out, scored on a single from Mike Kacelowicz (so. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain). Kacelowicz was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.

With Chad Lightcap (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) at the plate and the bases loaded, Wilmington’s catcher was called for catcher’s interference, plating Michael Dugan (r-fr. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City).

Both Frey and Lightcap had three hits in the game. Frey was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Lightcap was 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Wilmington bounced back after KU’s three-run second inning to score four in the top of the third.

Brian Testa led off the inning with a home run to left center, and KU starting pitcher Darin Gorski (so. Mount Joy/Donegal) allowed the next four batters to have free passes — one hit batter, who was caught stealing, and three straight walks.

Matt Umba drove on run in with his fielder’s choice and Mike Wilson knocked in two more with his double to right field to make it 5-3.

Lightcap made it to 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth, singling in Kacelowicz, who tripled to start the inning.

Wilmington added two runs in the eighth and another in the ninth to make it 8-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth, where a two-out, two-run single from Frey cut the Golden Bears’ deficit to 8-6.

Dugan, who went 2-for-4, made it back-to-back singles by beating out the throw to first on his grounder to shortstop, but Wilmington forced Saylor’s groundout to end the game.

Gorski pitched 6.2 innings for KU, striking out nine and allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks.

Wilmington’s Anthony Cimabue picked up the win, pitching six innings and allowing four runs — three earned — on nine hits and three walks.

KU will play again at 3 p.m. on Monday at the University of the Sciences. The Golden Bears will host the University of the Sciences at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday for a game that was originally scheduled for Saturday as a doubleheader, but pending inclement weather forced the postponement of the contest.
