KU Picks up Two Forfeit
Wins at Lincoln University
LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa.
- Kutztown University's baseball team officially recorded two wins
at Lincoln University on Wednesday, 11-0 and 11-1, nine days after
the teams first took the field.
On Wednesday, however,
only one team was on the field when the games were declared forfeit
wins for KU by the umpire-in-chief.
The
teams met for a pair of games, scheduled for seven innings each, on
Monday, April 7. Prior to the games, both teams agreed to utilize
the NCAA 10-run rule, which stipulates that a game can be stopped
after seven innings if one team is ahead by at least 10 runs.
When both games were stopped in the fifth inning, believing that the
10-run rule had been met, it was later determined that the games
were instead "halted," and scheduled to resume Wednesday.
Although Kutztown's team, the umpires and Lincoln's coaches reported
to the field, Lincoln's players did not. In accordance with
the NCAA baseball rulebook, section 5-12-a, which reads "If,
after play has been suspended by the umpire, one side fails to
resume playing in one minute after the umpire has called “Play,"'
the game is declared forfeit.
In accordance with
NCAA statistics policies, the scores all statistics to the point of
forfeiture count, as the games had both reached a "point of
reasonable conclusion", which is the fifth inning.
In game one, the Golden
Bears were led by Mike Dugan, who was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two
runs scored. Mark Renda was 2-for-3 with three runs.
Bryan Riggins drove in three runs. Anthony Fegely was the
pitcher of record, striking out five over two innings for the win.
Jordan Smith and Trent Mertz also pitched.
In game two, James
Quigley and Matt Kulbacki were 2-for-3 with two RBI each. Nole
Saylor was 3-for-3 with two runs, while Andy May was 2-for-4 with
two runs. Mike Moran was the pitcher of record, tossing two
innings of relief with three strikeouts for the win. Ryan
Cassidy and Jason Herr also pitched.
KU is now 18-17 on the
season.

KU BASEBALL TEAM TO
COMPLETE GAMES AT LINCOLN UNIVERSITY
KUTZTOWN, PA – The
Kutztown University and Lincoln University baseball teams will
complete a pair of games that were halted too early last Monday,
when the teams re-take the field on Wednesday at Lincoln University,
Pa.
The
teams met for a pair of games, scheduled for seven innings each, on
Monday, April 7. Prior to the games, both teams agreed to utilize
the NCAA 10-run rule, which stipulates that a game can be stopped
after seven innings if one team is ahead by at least 10 runs.
Kutztown led game one 11-0 and game two 11-1 after the fifth inning
of both games. At that point, the games were stopped, as it was
believed that the 10-run rule was met. However, after receiving
clarification from the NCAA rules committee later, it was determined
that the 10-run rule had not been met and that the games would need
to be completed to seven innings to count as regulation.
The
Golden Bears and Lions will re-take the field and resume game one in
the top of the sixth inning beginning at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the
LU Baseball Field, with the conclusion of game two to follow.
