LANCASTER,
Pa.
— Nick Spisak's two-out single in the bottom of the eighth
inning led West Chester to a 1-0 win over Kutztown in game seven of
the 2008 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) baseball
championship at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Spisak's single through the left side drove in Connor
Thorp, who had led off the eighth with a walk vs. KU hurler Darin
Gorski. After a sacrifice bunt, Thorp advanced to third on
a groundout. Then with a 2-2 count, Spisak laced a single past
a diving third baseman to plate Thorp.
KU had two golden opportunities to
score earlier in the game. In the fifth, Brett Wigder
reached on an error and moved to third on a one-out single by
Mike Kacelowicz. Chad Lightcap grounded into a
double play, stranding Wigder at third.
In the next inning, Garrison
Rausch singled and advanced on a wild pitch and sacrifice. After Matt Kulbacki walked, Jared Frey hit into
another double play, stranding Rausch.
The loss spoiled a fine effort by
Gorski, who struck out eight in eight innings, allowing five hits
and the one run. Kacelowicz had two of KU's five hits.
Dave Slusser started for WCU, going
5.1, allowing five hits and striking out four. Greg Ball (3-1)
was the winner, going 2.2 hitless innings. Eric Carmichael got
the save, pitching the ninth.
Kutztown (27-24) falls to the
losers' bracket final at 7 p.m. Friday, where it will face the
winner of Fridays' game eight between Millersville and Shippensburg.
West Chester (41-12) advances to
the Championship round on Saturday at 1 p.m. WCU needs to win
just one vs. the winner of game nine.
