Moyer, Stumpo key West Chester’s rout of Shepherd

WEST LAWN, Pa.Brett Moyer allowed just two hits as West Chester won 10-1 in Game 5 of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regionals Friday at Owls Field.

Moyer struck out nine batters and gave up one run on a solo home run in eight innings of work, as the No. 1-seeded Golden Rams advanced to Game 7 where they’ll meet the winner of Game 6 between No. 4 Mercyhurst and No. 5 West Virginia State.

Bob Stumpo fueled the West Chester offense, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs. He finished a double shy of the cycle.

Stumpo’s three-run homer to right-center gave West Chester a 10-1 lead.

West Chester (44-10) took a 3-0 lead in the second and made it 7-1 with single tallies in the sixth and seventh and two runs in the eighth. Three of West Chester’s runs were scored by sacrifice flies.

Shepherd (33-18), which is eliminated from competition with its second loss, scored its only run on a home run by Trey Stewart.

His solo shot in the seventh just cleared the fence in right field.

Shepherd’s only other hit came in the fourth on a single by Brian Collins.

Nick Spisak, Blair Dameron, Joe Wendle and Kyle Orensky each had two hits for the Golden Rams. Spisak and Orensky both had two RBIs and Orensky had two runs scored.

West Chester will return to the field at noon Saturday for Game 7.
