GOLDEN BEARS FALL 9-2 TO SHIPPENSBURG

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. The Kutztown University baseball team fell 9-2 to Shippensburg, which was led by starting pitcher Tim Freshour.

Freshour pitched a complete-game seven-hitter, allowing only two Golden Bear runs and striking out four.

The Golden Bears got on the board with a run in the first and another in the third, but were kept scoreless the rest of the way. Shippensburg responded with three runs in the first and one in each of the next three innings. The Red Raiders capped the scoring with three runs in the fifth.

The Golden Bears' offense was led by Corey Buletza (so. St. Claire/Pottsville) and Shayne Houck (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown) who both finished 2-for-3. Houck drove Buletza in with an RBI single in the first inning.

Jared Frey (so. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) drove in the other KU run, scoring Brett Wigder (so. Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) after he singled and advanced to third on a double by Buletza.

Ryan Cassidy (jr. Langhorne/Archbishop Wood) pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up five runs to take the loss. Kevin Morganti (sr. Reading/Muhlenberg) pitched two innings of relief, allowing four runs. Jordan Smith (so. New Milford/Blue Ridge) pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

SHIPPENSBURG FINISHES OFF SWEEP OF KU

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. Shippensburg took advantage of four Kutztown errors to finish off the sweep, with a 3-2 win in the second game of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division doubleheader.

The Golden Bears fell into a 3-0 hole after the Red Raiders scored once in the second inning and twice in the third. All three runs were unearned against losing pitcher Adam Maini (jr. Macungie/Emmaus).

Maini pitched all six innings for the Golden Bears, allowing only three hits and striking out four.

The Golden Bears' threat in the sixth inning came up just short, as they were only able to score two runs and cut the lead to 3-2.

James Quigley (so. Bensalem/Bensalem) had an RBI double to score Shayne Houck (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown), who reached on a walk. A single by Mike Kacelowicz (jr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) and a sacrifice fly by Jared Frey (so. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) plated Quigley.

Kacelowicz represented the tying run on second base, but was stranded.

Chad Lightcap (sr. Boyertown/Boyertown) singled in the seventh, but KU could not get anything else going, as Kody Kibler picked up the save.
