No. 14 KU splits doubleheader at No. 18 West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. — The Kutztown University baseball team split its doubleheader with West Chester University Saturday at Serpico Stadium.

The 14th-ranked Golden Bears won the first game 13-6 and fell 8-3 to No. 18 West Chester in the second.

KU (23-6, 9-1 PSAC East) holds onto first place over West Chester (24-9, 12-2) in the PSAC East, and the two schools will play another doubleheader at 1 p.m. Sunday at North Campus Field.

Quigley, Lightcap fuel 13-6 win in first game

WEST CHESTER, Pa. — James Quigley (so. Bensalem/Bensalem) and Chad Lightcap (sr. Boyertown/Boyertown) both had a double and a home run to lead the Golden Bears over the Golden Rams 13-6 in the first game of their doubleheader Saturday.

Both players went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored as the Golden Bears cranked out 12 hits. Five KU players finished with multiple his in the game.

Corey Buletza (so. St. Clair/Pottsville), Michael Dugan (so. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) and Brett Wigder (so. Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) each had two hits for the Golden Bears.

Dugan, who hit a solo homer, scored three runs, while Wigder scored twice and Buletza once.

Mike Kacelowicz (jr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) and Jared Frey (jr. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) also drove in two runs.

Ryan Cassidy (jr. Langhorne/Archbishop Wood) started for the Golden Bears, who jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the top of the third. Cassidy earned his fifth win of the season, going five innings, allowing five runs on nine hits. He struck out four.

Kevin Morganti (jr. Reading/Muhlenberg) pitched the final two innings, allowing just one run.


Seven runs in first three innings lead West Chester over KU

WEST CHESTER, Pa. — West Chester scored seven runs over the first three innings to defeat Kutztown University 8-3 in the second game of their doubleheader Saturday.

After West Chester scored three runs in the bottom of the first, KU battled back in the top of the second to tie the game at 3-3, but four runs in the third was all the Golden Rams needed to give the Golden Bears their first PSAC East loss of the season.

Mark Renda (so. Lansdale/North Penn) and Mike Kacelowicz (jr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) each had doubles for KU. Renda finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

James Quigley (so. Bensalem/Bensalem), Chad Lightcap (sr. Boyertown/Boyertown) and Michael Dugan (so. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) all hit singles and scored a run, and Jared Frey (jr. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) had an RBI.
