Dontay Wilson ran for 152 yards and two touchdowns to
lead Kutztown University to a 40-21 win over Cheyney University in a
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division game.
Wilson scored on runs of 1 and 47
yards, with the latter coming on the first play of the second half.
He was KU’s first back to reach 100 yards rushing this season. The junior's 152 yards are a career high. Kyle Spotts ran
for one score and threw for another, while Ryan Nye scored on
a fake field goal run and booted two field goals of 33 and 26
yards. Terrell Davis caught a TD.
Spotts finished 10-of-27 for 161
yards. Jason Uhlig had five catches for 91 yards and Davis
notched four grabs for 70. Kutztown’s defense racked up four
takeaways, including interceptions by Brian Bingnear and
Justin Gibbs and fumble recoveries by Tom Cressman and
Craig Croman. Bingnear led the defense with 11 tackles. Greg
Rotkowski had two sacks, while Cressman and Kevin Branco
also had sacks.
For Cheyney, Ronald Thompson passed
for a TD and ran for another. Charles Johnson caught an 18-yarder
from Thompson. Billy Mitchell scored the Wolves last TD on a 1-yard
run.
Mitchell led the Wolves with 78
yards on 20 carries. Thompson was 12-of-32 for 195 yards. Johnson
had five catches for 54 yards. Dominique Curry notched three grabs
for 58 yards and Eric Frazier recorded two grabs for 69 yards.
Cheyney took an early lead in the
first quarter, taking the opening kick and marching 86 yards on
eight plays, capped by Thompson’s 1-yard sneak.
Kutztown answered right back,
Chris Diaferio returned the kick to Cheyney 37, and Spotts hit
Davis from 18 yards out five plays later to tie the score.
After Cheyney fumbled a punt snap
on its next possession, Spotts went from 1 yard out five plays later
for a 14-7 lead. Thompson fumbled on a Cressman sack, and KU took
over at the 12. Wilson scored from 1 yard out for a 21-7 lead with
11:48 left in the half.
Nye scored on a
3-yard run on a
fake field goal, but his PAT missed keeping it 27-7 with 5:09 left
in the half.
KU opened the second half with a
flurry. After a short kickoff was returned to the Cheyney 47,
Wilson bounced to the right side and scampered 47 yards to paydirt
and a 34-7 KU lead 15 seconds into the second half.
The Wolves made it 34-14 later in
the third on Thompson’s 18-yard pass to Johnson.
KU answered with field goals by Nye
on its next two possessions, upping its lead to 40-14. Cheyney
capped the scoring with 5:26 left in the fourth on Mitchell’s 1-yard
run.
Kutztown improves to 4-4 overall,
1-2 in the PSAC East. The Golden Bears host Edinboro next
Saturday. Cheyney falls to 1-7, 0-2. The Wolves host Millersville
next week.
