BOX SCORE
CLARION,
PA – Kyle Spotts passed for 219 yards and four touchdowns to lead
Kutztown to a 35-13 win over Clarion in a Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover.
Spotts
connected with Elfren Quiles on a pair of touchdowns for Kutztown
(1-1). Quiles finished with seven catches for 98 yards. Alex Zukus
and Will Brown caught Spotts other TD strikes. Tom Cressman led
KU’s defense, returning an interception for a touchdown.
Eddie
Emmanuel led the Golden Eagles (0-2) with 105 yards on 20 carries.
Herb Carroway had four catches for 90 yards and CU’s only TD, a
65-yard catch and run.
KU
opened the scoring late in the first half. Mike Gardier tipped a
Tyler Heuter pass into the hands of Cressman, who returned it 23
yards to paydirt. Clarion, though, tied it up 1:05 later when
Heuter hit Carroway over the middle. Carroway split two defenders
and scampered 65 yards for the TD to tie it.
The
Golden Bears managed a 10-play, 80-yard drive to take the lead for
good. Spotts capped the drive with an 18-yard TD pass to Zukus, his
former Tamaqua HS teammate’s first first collegiate touchdown.
After
Emmanuel fumbled on Clarion’s next possession, Spotts made it 21-7
three plays later on a third-and-23, 34-yard TD pass to Quiles.
The
Eagles made it 21-10 three seconds before halftime on Robert
Mamula’s 25-yard field goal. Mamula had missed two previous kicks,
hitting the upright and crossbar. He then cut the lead to 21-13
with a 32-yard kick with 7:59 left in the third.
Kutztown answered right back. Dinnis returned the ensuing kickoff
56 yards to the Clarion 32. Spotts connected with Brown on the next
play for a 32-yard TD and a 28-13 lead.
KU
closed the scoring late in the third quarter when Spotts connected
with Quiles for the pair’s second TD, an eight yarder, after a pair
of 23 and 16-yard receptions by Dinnis.
Kutztown’s defense had three interceptions in the game, with picks
by Brian Bingnear and Scott Smith in addition to Cressman’s. KU
also racked up five sacks, two by Leroy Azubuike.
Kutztown picked up its fourth win in five years against the Eagles,
and leaves with just its second-ever win at Clarion’s Memorial
Stadium.
The
Golden Bears will be in action next Saturday for their 2007 home
opener against Shippensburg. Kickoff is set for 3:05 PM at
University Field.
