BOXSCORE

KUTZTOWN, Pa. Maurice Adams (sr. West Chester/Henderson) and Dontay Wilson (jr. Stamford, Conn./Stamford) combined for 174 yards and two scores as the Kutztown University football team held off Millersville University 26-17 Saturday at University Field.

The game was homecoming and Hall of Fame (more on the Hall of Fame) day at KU.  In addition, KU recognized 2003 alumnus and former wide receiver Lt. David Borden, who was injured serving in Iraq in January (more on Borden) prior to the game.

The Golden Bears (4-5, 3-3 PSAC East) jumped out to a 23-7 halftime lead in the rain-soaked Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East game.

Millersville (1-8, 1-5 PSAC East) scored 10 consecutive points in the second half to cut KU’s lead to 23-17, but Matt Dineen (so. Wilmington, Del./Concord) kicked one of his two field goals with 9:33 left in the fourth to make it a nine-point game.

Adams, who finished with 88 yards on 14 carries, scored on a 31-yard run to tie the score at 7-7, and after Dineen made it 10-7, Wilson scored from 7 yards out to make it 17-7.  Wilson finished with 86 yards on 15 carries.

Shane Martin (jr. New Holland/Garden Spot) hooked up with Kaleb Klosky (jr. Fisher/Clarion-Limestone) for a 5-yard touchdown pass with 29 seconds left in the second quarter, extending KU’s lead to 23-7. Martin finished 10-of-19 for 93 yards, and had 50 yards on the ground.

MU had opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 31-yard pass from Bill Shirk to Andy Tischbein.

KU struck right back, marching 77 yards on just six plays, capped by Adams’ 31 yard scoring run.

Kendell Coleman (so. Philadelphia/Martin Luther King) had a 43-yard punt return after MU’s next possession set up Dineen’s 26 yard field goal.  It was Dineen’s 10th three-pointer of the season, eclipsing the previous record of nine by Dean Myers (1993) and Tim DeLaney (1996).

Kutztown stretched its lead to 23-7 just before half, marching 70 yards on 16 plays.  Martin’s 22-yard pass to Jason Uhlig (so. Blue Bell/Wissahickon), on 3rd and 15, kept the drive alive.  Martin finished the scoring drive with a 5-yard lob to Klosky.

Cardoza Jacks, who had 139 yards on 30 carries, scored from one yard out to make it 23-14 in the third.  After MU had an interception, interception, Banzhof hit an 18-yard field goal early in the fourth to pull MU within 23-17 with 13:36 left in the game.

Millersville forced a punt on KU’s next possession, but Tischbein muffed the return and it was recovered by KU long snapper Jake Thierjung (so. Bensalem/Bensalem) at the MU 21.  Four plays later, Dineen’s 35-yard field goal made it 26-17 with 9:33 left.

Safety Cory Porrino (sr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) picked off a Shirk pass to end Millersville’s next drive, and DT Christopher Medina sacked the QB on fourth down to halt the Marauder’s last gasp effort in the final minute.

LB Sam McKellar (sr. Allentown/Dieruff) led all players with 14 tackles for KU. Safety Khalief Evans added 11.

Matt Harmon had 10 hits and an interception for Millersville.

Kutztown recorded its first homecoming in since 2003, which was also vs. Millersville, and the victory gave KU its first back-to-back wins over the Marauders since 1946-47.
