SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
— Ryan Lehmeier ran for three touchdowns and
Slippery Rock took advantage of six Kutztown turnovers to defeat the
Golden Bears 38-24 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
crossover Saturday night.
Lehmeier ran for 79 yards on 21 carries and Brandon Frohnapple
completed 13-of-20 for 115 yards and a TD.
Jason Uhlig caught seven passes for a career-high 151 yards and a
TD. Shane Martin ran for 41 yards and a TD, and completed 16-of-35
passes for 257 yards.
Slippery Rock turned four Kutztown turnovers into a 24-10
halftime lead.
Frohnapple found Terry Grossetti for a 29-yard touchdown with
4:29 left in the first quarter, capping an 80-yard drive.
Kutztown answered with an eight-play, 74-yard drive, fueled by a
41-yard scramble by Martin and capped by a 3-yard TD run by Dontay
Wilson.
Slippery Rock then scored 17 straight points with a 34-yard field
goal by C.J. Bahr, and 1- and 10-yard runs by Lehmeier. All
three scoring drives began after KU turnovers inside the 30-yard line.
KU made it 24-10 with 13 seconds left before the half on Matt
Dineen's 34-yard field goal.
Ryan Webb returned a Martin interception, KU's fifth turnover of
the game, 40 yards for a touchdown midway through the third quarter
before Kutztown mounted a comeback. KU's defense held SRU to
negative-7 yards on its first five second-half possessions.
The offense took advantage of the momentum as Martin hit Uhlig on
a 33-yard TD pass and after a Rock punt. Late in the third, Martin
went in from 1 yard out to cap a 77-yard drive and make it 31-24.
KU forced a punt and drove into SRU territory, but had to punt
itself. The Rock then chewed 5:29 and drove 80 yards, capped by a 1-yard run by Lehmeier with 5:09 left. KU had two
final chances, but both ended on turnovers on downs.
Kutztown outgained SRU 406-231 in the game.
The Golden Bears were led defensively by Khalief Evans, who had
11 tackles. Kevin Bolinsky had eight tackles. Joe Irwin
had six hits, including three for loss and a half-sack. Mike Gardier had a sack and forced fumble with five hits. David Cressman had six stops, two for loss and a half sack.
