BLOOMSBURG, Pa. –
Dan Latorre passed for 210 yards and two touchdowns to lead
Bloomsburg to a 31-21 win over Kutztown in the Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener Saturday
afternoon at Redman Stadium.
Latorre hooked up
with Kyle Ream on touchdown passes of 55 and 28 yards. Ream
finished with 102 yards on four catches. Derrick Price and Kenny Domzalski each ran for a TD, but were held to a combined 95 yards,
well below their season averages.
Shane Martin passed
for 161 yards and two touchdowns, one each to Kaleb Klosky and Jason
Uhlig. Martin ran for 56 yards on 15 carries. Matt Dineen
accounted for KU’s other scores, field goals of 37 and 34 yards.
The Golden Bear
defense put up a valiant effort. Bloomsburg, which entered the
game as the No. 2 team in rushing at 330 yards per game, managed just
160 yards on the ground.
Khalief Evans had
10 tackles, while David Cressman had a sack among his eight hits. Brent Howard had an interception.
Kutztown opened the
scoring late in the first quarter on a 37-yard field goal by Matt
Dineen. The kick capped a 14-play, 46-yard drive.
Bloomsburg tied it
at 3-3 with a 35-yard field goal by Jon Koenig, capping a 46-yard
scoring drive.
KU retook the lead
with 3:25 to play in the first half, when a scrambling Martin found
Klosky for a 15-yard touchdown. BU answered right back when Ream
scored on a 55-yard pass from Latorre to make it 10-10 going into
halftime.
The Huskies took
their first lead midway through the third. After a punt return and
facemask gave BU the ball at the KU 28, Latorre and Ream hooked up
again on the next play for a 17-10 lead.
On KU’s next
possession, Dineen made it 17-13 with a 34-yard field goal, capping
another 46-yard drive.
BU stretched its
lead to 24-13 late in the third when Kenny Domzalsky capped a
63-yard march with a 7-yard run.
Kutztown drove 80
yards on 18 plays, with Martin completing 9-of-13 passes for 60
yards, including three third down and one fourth down conversion. Martin hit Uhlig for a 2-yard score and then found Nick Aspromonte
on the two-point conversion to make it 24-21 with 1:47 to play.
The ensuing on-side
kick was recovered by the Huskies. After picking up two first downs
on QB keepers by Latorre, KU allowed Price to score on a 9-yard run
for a 31-21 lead with 1:16 left.
KU’s final chance
ended after Martin failed to complete a pass and BU ran out the
clock.
