KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Quarterback
Gino Rometo scored on a 1-yard run with 4:14 left to lift Clarion to
a 26-20 come-from-behind win over Kutztown in a Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference (PSAC) inter-division game at rain-soaked
University Field.
Rometo and
running back Eddie Emmanuel scored two touchdowns each as Clarion
erased a 20-0 halftime deficit with 26 unanswered second-half
points. With the win, Clarion snaps a 16-game losing streak.
Rometo finished
13-of-21 for 121 yards, along with the two 1-yard TD plunges.
Emmanuel ran for 113 yards on 25 carries, scoring on runs of 4 and
15 yards.
Kutztown built the first-half lead on a pair of
Matt Dineen (so. Wilmington,
Del./Concord)
field goals of
23 and 21 yards, along with a 6-yard run by
Cory McFadden (jr. Freemansburg/Bethlehem
Catholic)
and a 65-yard run by
Dontay Wilson (jr. Stamford,
Conn./Stamford). Wilson
finished with 104 yards on nine carries.
Nick Cresta (sr. Wallingford/Strath
Haven)
had a sack,
interception, forced fumble and four tackles to lead KU's defense.
Kevin Bolinsky (so. Ashland/North
Schuylkill)
had 10 tackles.
Craig Croman (jr. Pine Grove/Pine
Grove)
had an
interception and forced a fumble.
The teams
combined for 12 fumbles, including eight by KU. KU lost three of
those fumbles, while Clarion lost two and had two interceptions.
Clarion took
advantage of two KU fumbles to score its first two TDs. Mike Verdon
recovered a fumble at the CU 31-yard line and returned it 51 yards
to the KU 18. Seven plays later, Rometo scored from 1 yard out, but
the PAT was blocked. On the ensuing kickoff return, Jonathan Baldwin
recovered Wilson's fumble at the KU 15. Emmanuel scored from 4 yards
out three plays later. The PAT was good, making it 20-13 KU.
After a short
punt into the wind, Clarion had to go just 45 yard, and Emmanuel
capped the four-play drive with a 15-yard run. Robert Mamula's PAT
knotted it at 20.
In the fourth,
KU stopped one Clarion drive with an interception by Croman at the
KU 24. Then, a 68-yard punt by Nye was fumbled by the Golden Eagles,
but Clarion recovered it at its own 7. From there, Rometo engineered
the game-winning drive, covering 93 yards on 13 plays and taking
6:31 off the clock. His 1-yard run gave Clarion its first lead with
4:14 left, but the PAT sailed wide, making the score 26-20.
KU, however, had a golden chance to win the game. KU drove 70 yards,
moving inside the Clarion 1 with just over a minute to play. The
drive was fueled by a 19-yard pass from
Shane Martin (jr. New Holland/Garden
Spot)
to
Kaleb Klosky (jr.
Fisher/Clarion-Limestone), and an
18-yarder to
Mike Dietrich (jr. York/York Catholic)
that put the
ball inside Clarion's 1.
Clarion's defense held, though, as Martin was stopped for no gain
and fumbled on the next play. KU recovered, but after an
incompletion, Martin was sacked by Joseph Fox on fourth down to seal
the game.
