BOX SCORE
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -
Dontay Wilson (jr. Stamford, Conn./Stamford) ran for 109 yards on 14
carries, but the Kutztown University football team lost to East
Stroudsburg 27-3 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)
Eastern Division contest Saturday afternoon.
Tim Roken completed 11-of-24 for 154 yards and a TD, Russell Johnson
and Jesse Reider ran for TDs and Greg Knauss hit a pair of field
goals for the Warriors (6-2, 3-2 PSAC East).
Matt
Dineen (so. Wilmington, Del./Concord) booted a 23 yard field goal in the third quarter
to account for
KU's only points. It was Dineen's ninth field goal of the
season, tying the KU record held by Dean Myers and Tim DeLaney.
ESU's defense held
Shane Martin (jr. New Holland/Garden Spot) to just 12-of-27 passing for 86
yards. Wilson accounted for over half of KU's 204 total yards.
Mike Gardier (jr. Dunmore/Dunmore) and
Joel
Irwin (so. Coatesville/Bishop Shanahan) led all players
with 12 tackles each.
Khalief Evans (so. Philadelphia/Imhotep Charter) had
eight tackles, with a forced fumble and a pass breakup.
Kevin Bolinsky (so. Ashland/North Schuylkill) had eight
tackles, while
Greg Rotkowski (so. Macungie/Emmaus) and
Colin Henny (fr. Lititz/Manheim Twp.) shared a sack.
Ryan
Nye (sr. Bernville/Holy Name) was busy, punting eight
times for an average of 41.5 yards.
The Golden Bears (3-5, 2-3 PSAC East), who had just 273 penalty
yards entering the game, were flagged for a season-high 78 yards on
six penalties. Among the flags were a roughing the punter to
sustain an ESU drive, a personal foul to negate an interception and
lead to an ESU field goal, an illegal chop block that stalled a KU
drive, and an illegal block that negated a Martin
TD run and forced KU to settle for its only field goal.
The Warriors drew first blood late in the first quarter, with Joe
Partridge running six times on an eight play drive, setting up
Roken's 14-yard pass to Jeff Giglio with 3:01 left in the first.
After a KU punt, ESU's first drive of the second quarter resulted in
a 23 yard field goal by Knauss.
Later in the quarter, Roken was picked off by
Cory
Porrino (sr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) near midfield,
but the play was nullified by a personal foul penalty on KU.
ESU capitalized, going 39 yards on 11 plays to set up Knauss' 44
yard field goal and a 13-0 lead four seconds before halftime.
Kutztown got the offense going on its third drive of the second
half. Wilson's 41-yard run set up what looked to be a Martin
TD run, but an illegal block below the waist nullified the TD.
KU had to settle for Dineen's 23-yard field goal,
making it 13-3 with 1:30 left in the third.
ESU quickly retook control. A 46-yard hookup from Roken to Sam
Shuman set up Reider's 1-yard run on the fourth play of the final
quarter.
After a KU punt, Drew Stem finished off a stellar day of punt
returns. His 37-yard return gave him 108 on seven returns, and
gave the Warriors the ball at midfield. Nine plays later,
Johnson went in from 6 yards out to make it 27-6.
Kutztown will return home next week for homecoming to face
Millersville. Kickoff is set for 1:05 p.m. at University
Field.
