Joe Wright passes for six touchdowns to lead West Chester to a
49-8 win over Kutztown in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)
Eastern Division game at University Field.
Wright finished
19-of-27 for 385 yards. He tied WCU’s single-game record for
touchdown passes, held by three other Golden Rams.
Mike Washington,
who set WCU’s career record for TD catches with 49 and moved within
one of the PSAC career record, had two TDs on seven catches for 142
yards. Ryan Paulson and Steve Miller also had two TD catches. Paulson finished with 118 yards on four catches, while Miller had 89
yards on five catches.
Travis Ford-Bey
returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown for the Golden
Rams. Matt Colyar, Abe Brooks and T.J. Cascio had five tackles each
for WCU.
For Kutztown,
Matt Dineen
(so. Wilmington, Del./Concord) hit field goals of 28 and 26
yards, and the Golden Bears scored a fourth-quarter safety when
WCU’s punt snap went out of the end zone. Shane
Martin (jr. New Holland/Garden Spot) was 11-of-25 for 110
yards and also picked up 41 yards on the ground. He was intercepted
twice.
Mike
Gardier (jr. Dunmore/Dunmore)
had 10 tackles to lead all players. He added a tackle for loss and
a pass breakup. Brent
Howard (jr. Gilbertsville/Boyertown) had seven hits. Greg
Rotkowski (so. Macungie/Emmaus) had a sack.
West Chester took
the opening kick and marched 69 yards on eight plays, capped by
Wright’s first TD pass to Miller, a 24-yard hookup.
Kutztown answered
with a 10-play, 49-yard drive, which ended with Dineen’s
28-yard field goal.
After the teams
traded punts, Wright hooked up with Washington on the first play of
the Rams next drive for a 57-yard scoring strike. Then, on the first
play of the second quarter, Martin was hit as he passed and it was
picked off by Ford-Bey who rumbled 26 yards to the end zone for a
21-3 lead.
Kutztown answered
with a 26-yard Dineen field goal, after going 74 yards on 16
plays.
The Rams stretched
the lead to 28-6 with one second left in the half when Washington
hauled in a 5-yard pass from Wright. The scoring drive had been
kept alive by pair of costly KU penalties, including a roughing the
kicker flag on a punt.
WCU quickly upped
its lead to 42-6 in the third quarter. After a KU punt, Wright
found Paulson on the fourth play of the ensuing drive for a 43-yard
hookup. Martin was intercepted on the next play from scrimmage and WCU went 77 yards on six plays, capped by Wright’s 47-yard scoring
strike to Paulson with 7:54 left in the third.
Wright’s sixth
touchdown came on a 32-yard pass to Miller with 1:40 left in the
third.
The scoring was
capped with 13:06 left in the game when WCU’s long snapper sailed
one over the head of the Rams punter and out of the end zone for a
safety.
Kutztown falls to
1-3 overall, 0-2 in the PSAC East. The Golden Bears will look to
snap their four-game losing streak at Cheyney next Saturday.
West Chester
improves to 3-2 overall, 2-0 in the division. West Chester travels
to East Stroudsburg next Saturday.
