Kutztown
picked to finish sixth in PSAC East
KUTZTOWN,
Pa. —
As Kutztown University rolled out the red carpet and welcomed with
open arms its member schools, the Kutztown football team was picked
to finish sixth in the PSAC Eastern Division preseason poll released
Monday afternoon during the conference’s media day held on the KU
campus in the Multi-Purpose Room of the McFarland Student Union
Building.
The Golden
Bears were selected to finish behind Bloomsburg, West Chester, East
Stroudsburg, Shippensburg and C.W. Post. Selected after Kutztown
were Millersville and Cheyney. PSAC commissioner Steve Murray
moderated the event.
“We play these
teams year in and year out,” fourth year head coach Raymond Monica
said. “That’s kind of the way they feel we are even though the last
two years we’ve finished third and fourth in the league. Now we’re
getting ready to come back, line up and play it again and it’s
important to see how it ends in the regular season than the
preseason. We’re excited about the season and looking forward to the
challenges ahead of us.”
In finishing
with a 5-6 overall record last season, Kutztown won four PSAC
conference contests for the first time since 2001 to tie a school
record. The improvement has been recognized as Kutztown enters the
2009 season as one of the teams to watch in the East Region by
The Sporting News College Football preseason magazine.
Kutztown
returns 46 letterwinners including a pair of 2008 PSAC East first
team selections in senior running back
Dontay
Wilson (Stamford, CT/Stamford) and junior punt returner
Kendell Coleman (Philadelphia, PA/Martin Luther King).
Overall the Golden Bears return 18 of 22 starters. Defensively, KU
welcomes back seven of its top tacklers from last season led by 2008
all-PSAC second team senior safety
Mike
Gardier (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore).
The Golden
Bears begin football camp on Thursday August 6.
“The thing
that’s important to me right now is taking a look at our young guys
that we have coming into camp,” Monica said. “Right now, we have to
see what guys can help us. We’re going to take a look at some
wideouts and some defensive backs. That will probably be the most
important thing we do in camp this week. We have to identify those
kids who can help us.”
Kutztown begins
the 2009 season on the road at Saint Anselm College in Manchester
(NH) with kickoff scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
“The thing is
they came here last year and they are very much improved team from
last year. I watched their final three games. Get ready for three
weeks and you have an opportunity to have players take a trip
they’ve never been on, going to a different state. It’s a pretty far
trip and that’s good for the players because they get to experience
something different.”
The Golden
Bears’ first home game will be Saturday September 12 against
Slippery Rock beginning at 6:05 p.m.
