KUTZTOWN, Pa.Tyler Dinnis (sr. Doylestown/Central Bucks West) rushed for 128 yards and a score as the Kutztown University Maroon Team won 16-7 over the Gold Team in the annual Maroon & Gold Spring Football Game Saturday at University Field.

Dinnis broke free for a 53-yard touchdown in the first quarter to help the Maroon Team to a 7-0 halftime lead.

Matt Dineen (so. Wilmington, Del./Concord), who was the kicker for both teams, made three field goals in the game, all three for the Maroon Team.

He made 26-yarder early in the third quarter, and after the Gold Team cut it to 10-7 in the fourth, Dineen hit field goals from 43 and 38 yards to seal the win for the Maroon Team.

Last season, Dineen set single-season KU records for field goals (13) and field goals attempted (18). His 72.2 field goal percentage ranks sixth on KU’s single-season chart. Dineen also hit 25-of-26 PAT kicks, the best percentage on record for a KU kicker.

Saturday, he was 2-for-2 on extra-point attempts, hitting one for each team.

The Gold Team, led by honorary coach Matt Santos, the director of university relations at Kutztown, managed its only score with 14:54 left in the fourth quarter when Shane Martin (jr. New Holland/Garden Spot) found Jason Uhlig (so. Blue Bell/Wissahickon) wide open on a short slant across the middle for an 8-yard score to cut Maroon’s lead to 10-7.

The only other time the Gold Team crossed midfield was in the second quarter when the half-back option play resulted in a 34-yard completion.

Running back Le’Anthony Fleming (jr. Lakeland, Fla./Sonrise Christian) took the handoff, ran to his right and tossed the ball downfield to Will Brown (so. Trenton, N.J./Ewing), who made one of his three catches in the game. He led the Gold Team with 61 yards receiving.

From left, Maroon honorary coach Troy Hein, KU head football coach Raymond Monica and Gold honorary head coach Matt Santos gather at midfield at halftime. Hein is the sports director at WFMZ-TV 69 News and Santos is the director of university relations at Kutztown.

The drive, however, stalled after the trick play as Maroon’s honorary coach Troy Hein, the WFMZ-TV 69 News sports director, watched his defense, which recorded three sacks and five tackles for a loss, stop Martin’s quarterback sneak on fourth-and-3.

Mike Gardier (jr. Dunmore/Dunmore), who was second on the team in tackles in 2008 with 72, made the stop on fourth down.

He, along with Maroon teammate Jay McKnight (so. Reading/Conrad Weiser), made six tackles in the game.

Hein's defense came up big again in the fourth quarter when back-to-back sacks forced another turnover on downs with Maroon leading by six points, 13-7.

The second sack was by Christopher Medina (jr. Kennett Square/Kennett) on fourth down, giving the ball back to the offense and setting up Dineen’s third field goal of the game.

Karlos Bimba (fr. Warrington/Central Bucks South) and Craig Croman (jr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) also recorded sacks for the Maroon team.

Alex DiNolfi (fr. Norristown/Norristown) led the Gold Team’s defense with seven tackles.

Kevin Morton (fr. Roslyn/Abington), who split time at quarterback with Storm Miller (fr. Jamison/Central Bucks South), led the Maroon Team, completing 7-of-14 passes for 70 yards.

Zach Snyder (fr. Lititz/Warwick) caught three passes for a game-high 75 yards for the Maroon Team. Chris Smith (fr. Chichester/Chichester) caught four passes for 21 yards.

Andre Woodlin (sr. Philadelphia/Central), of the 2008-09 record-breaking men’s basketball team, suited up at wideout for the Maroon Team, catching one pass for 20 yards.

For the Gold Team, Martin finished 6-of-14 for 76 yards and a touchdown. Fleming rushed for 39 yards on 13 carries.

At halftime, KU head coach Raymond Monica honored left guard Aaron McGlynn (fr. Harleysville/Souderton) with the Most Improved Offensive Player Award and defensive tackle Jason Henshaw (fr. West Chester/Henderson) with the Most Improved Defensive Player Award.

The annual Maroon & Gold Spring Game marks the end of spring practice for the Golden Bears. KU will open the 2009 season with two road games, including a trip to St. Anselm on Aug. 29 to open the season. The Golden Bears will play the first of five home games on Thursday, Sept. 10, against Slippery Rock. The 7:05 p.m. kickoff will mark the second Thursday night game in school history and the first against a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Notes: The Maroon & Gold Spring Game was played with a running clock, only stopping when there was a change of possession. The rules for punting and kickoffs varied, with only the kicker or punter and the returner taking the field. The ball was advanced 20 yards from the spot where the kickoff was received and after punts, the offense set up where the catch was made.
