Kutztown and Cheyney looking for first PSAC win of 2009

KUTZTOWN, PA (September 30, 2009) – The Kutztown University football team returns home to meet Cheyney University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest Saturday, October 3 beginning at 1:05 p.m. at University Field. (CLICK HERE TO READ GAME NOTES)

The game will be broadcast on WEEU-830 AM based out of Reading beginning at 12:50 p.m. with the pregame show. Fans throughout the world can listen to game at www.kubears.com. The Kutztown student radio station KUR (88.3 FM/1670 AM) will simulcast WEEU’s audio broadcast.

In addition, the game will air live on KUTV, which is Service Electric Channel 24 and Hometown Utilicom Channel 28 in Kutztown and Eastern Berks CountyThe game will be replayed at 6 p.m. Sunday Oct. 4, 3 p.m. Monday Oct. 5 and noon Tuesday Oct. 6.  

Both teams enter the game looking for their first conference victories after losing last week. Kutztown (2-3 overall, 0-2 PSAC East) lost to West Chester, 37-17, on the road. Cheyney (0-5, 0-2) lost to East Stroudsburg University, 37-0, in its home opener.

Kutztown leads the all-time series, 48-10-1. The Golden Bears won last year’s contest, 31-13 at Cheyney. Kutztown overcame an early 13-7 deficit to turn back the Wolves. Cheyney’s last victory over Kutztown was a 31-19 decision in 1993.

Kutztown fell into a 21-0 hole before slicing West Chester’s advantage to 24-17 entering the fourth quarter. Redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington/Abington) had a solid debut, completing 23-of-38 passes for 238 yards. Freshman wide receiver Chris McCormick (West Chester/East) caught a touchdown pass for the third consecutive game after hauling in a 30-yard strike. Sophomore wide receiver Colby Tuell (Columbia/Columbia) gained 67 yards on four receptions.

Junior safety Khalief Evans (Philadelphia/Imhotep Charter) led the Golden Bears with 10 tackles. Senior linebacker David Cressman (Sellersville/Pennridge) and junior defensive back Jay McKnight (Freemansburg/Bethlehem Catholic) finished with nine tackles each. Junior linebacker Joel Irwin (Coatesville/Bishop Shanahan) had eight stops with three of them for losses.

Kutztown will look to unleash senior running back Dontay Wilson (Stamford, CT/Stamford). Wilson has gained 45 yards combined in the Golden Bears’ last two games against Bloomsburg and West Chester. He needs 118 yards to become the 10th player in Kutztown football history to reach 2,000 for his career. Wilson is the third leading rusher in the PSAC (88.6). Cheyney is last in the PSAC in rushing defense (278.4).

In addition to Wilson, the Golden Bears have several additional players ranked among the top 10 in the PSAC in various categories. Junior kick returner Kendell Coleman (Philadelphia/Martin Luther King) is third in kick return average (27.1). Junior kicker Matt Dineen (Wilmington, DE/Concord) is second in punting average (41.6) and field goals made per game (1.60). Irwin is fifth in tackles (9.8). Senior Kevin Bolinsky (Ashland/North Schuylkill) is tied for eighth in sacks per game (3.5). McCormick is ninth in receptions per game (4.6).

Cheyney’s defense allowed 517 yards to ESU while generating 189 yards of total offense.  Ron Hunter and Angel Rodriguez led the Wolves in the running game amassing 60 yards and 54 yards respectively.  Rodriguez also completed 5 of 11 passes for 74 yards and one interception. Defensively, Demel Chambers led the Wolves with 11 tackles and Bryan Payne added nine stops. Chambers and Julius Faison had sacks for Cheyney.

Chambers is one of the top players in the PSAC. He is tied for eighth in tackles (8.8) and 17th in sacks (2.0). Stan Banks leads Cheyney with two interceptions. Cheyney’s strength has been its pass defense. The Wolves are third in the PSAC (159.6) in that category and they have intercepted six passes. Hunter is seventh in the PSAC in all-purpose yards (108.2). The Wolves leading receiver is John Newman with 10 catches for 66 yards. Travis Taltoan has caught Cheyney’s only touchdown pass of the season.

The Wolves scored a season-high 20 points in their loss to Lincoln (Pa.). Overall, Cheyney has scored 44 points through five games, an average of 8.8 per outing. Cheyney has not scored a point in 10 consecutive periods.

Next week, Kutztown travels to Shippensburg and Cheyney hosts Millersville. Both games kickoff at 1 p.m.
