Kutztown (3-3 overall, 1-2 PSAC East) can tie Shippensburg (4-2, 2-1) in the conference standings with a victory. Shippensburg is one of four teams entering this week with a 2-1 conference record in the tightly-packed PSAC East. Kutztown defeated Cheyney, 35-21, last week behind five field goals from junior Matt Dineen (Wilmington. DE/Concord). Meanwhile, Shippensburg had its four-game winning streak end with a 40-24 loss to C.W. Post.

Shippensburg leads the all-time series, 43-16-2. However, Kutztown has won two straight games over Shippensburg including last year’s meeting, 42-21. Senior running back Dontay Wilson (Stamford, CT/Stamford) and junior running back Kendell Coleman (Philadelphia/Martin Luther King) scored two touchdowns each for Kutztown. Wilson rushed for 143 yards while Brent Howard (Gilbertsville/Boyertown) and Chris McCaffery (Philadelphia/Avon Grove) each had an interception.

In its victory over Cheyney, the Golden Bears got touchdowns from freshman running back Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington/Upper Dublin), sophomore fullback Calvin Spires (Philadelphia/Frankford) and redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington/Abington). Dineen’s field goals covered 41, 41, 29, 34, and 28 yards. Dineen, who has made eight consecutive field goals, was named PSAC East co-Offensive Player of the Week. His next made field goal will set the KU single season record. Dineen established the Kutztown season mark with 13 made field goals in 2008. He is the KU all-time leader in career field goals with 31.

Making his second straight start at quarterback, Morton completed 15 passes for 199 yards. He completed passes to six different receivers. Freshman wide receiver Chris McCormick (West Chester/East) and freshman wide receiver Dominick Massey (Abington/Abington) caught four passes each. McCormick finished with 77 receiving yards. In addition to catching three passes for 24 yards, freshman wide receiver Jake Cahill (Secane/Ridley) blocked a punt that set up KU’s first scoring drive.

Defensively, Kutztown held Cheyney to 81 yards in the second half, including a total of minus -8 yards in the third quarter. Junior defensive back Khalief Evans (Philadelphia/Imhotep Charter) and senior defensive tackle Craig Croman (Pine Grove/Pine Grove) led KU with six tackles each. Two of Croman’s tackles were for losses. Junior defensive back Jay McKnight (Reading/Conrad Weiser) had Kutztown’s only interception of the game. Croman, junior defensive end Kevin Bolinsky (Ashland/North Schuylkill), redshirt freshman defensive end Bryce Martin (Teaneck, NJ/Bergen Catholic) and McCaffery recorded a sack each against Cheyney.

Wilson, who finished with 70 yards on 17 carries against Cheyney, has 1,952 career yards. He needs 48 yards to become the 10th runner in KU history to gain 2,000 yards. Wilson is currently fourth in the PSAC in rushing (85.5 yards per game). McCormick is eighth in receptions per game (4.5). Dineen leads the conference in field goals (13) and kick scoring (8.3 points per game). He is also second in punt average (40.8) and fourth in overall scoring (8.3). Junior linebacker Joel Irwin (Coatesville/Bishop Shanahan) is tied for fifth in tackles per game (8.7).

In its loss last week, Shippensburg allowed 19 points in the fourth quarter as its four-game winning streak ended. Junior Jeff Fertig started the game by returning the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown. Senior Mike Harris had seven receptions for 112 yards, passing Jeff Zubia to rank second on SU's all-time career receptions list. Redshirt freshman Kevin Herod ran strong once again, totaling 18 carries for 84 yards. Overall, the Red Raiders totaled 158 yards on 37 rushing attempts. Through the air, senior quarterback Chad DiFebbo completed 14 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns.

Harris is among the conference leaders in several categories. He is first in reception yards per game (96.7), fourth in receptions per game (5.3), fifth in all-purpose yards (113.2) and seventh in scoring (7.0). Harris has caught seven touchdown passes. DiFebbo is third in passing efficiency (142.0), and seventh in passing yards per game (184.5) and total offense (186.0). Herod is seventh in rushing (78.6).

The fewest points Shippensburg has scored this season was 23 in its season-opening defeat to Shepherd. Shippensburg is second in the PSAC in total offense (409.7) and rushing offense (214.2). The Red Raiders have finished with 300 or more yards of total offense in five of their six games. The one time Shippensburg was held under 300 yards, it finished with 299 against Edinboro.
