Kutztown University is proud to honor Golden
Bear football alumnus Lieutenant David
A. Borden, who was injured serving in
Iraq earlier this year, prior to KU's football game vs. Millersville
on homecoming, Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008.
The recognition took place at 1 p.m.,
just before kickoff.
Borden attended Kutztown from 1999-2003,
playing for the Golden Bears as a wide receiver during that time.
Borden had 45 receptions for 617 yards
and six touchdowns in four seasons for the KU football team.
He graduated in December 2003 with a
degree in business-finance. After entering the workforce upon
graduation, Borden decided to follow his lifelong dream of being a
United States Marine Officer.
After completing Officer Candidate School, Basic School and the Infantry Officer
Course at Quantico, Lieutenant Borden was assigned to 1st
Battalion, 8th
Marine Regiment at Camp Lejeune, N.C., as a Rifle Platoon Commander. In
September 2007, he was deployed to Ramadi, Iraq.
Five months later, while leading
a platoon of 40 Marines through Ramadi, fighting broke out
with a group of insurgents.
One marine was killed and four
others injured.
Borden was among the injured.
He suffered multiple internal
injuries, broken bones and an amputation below the right
knee.
Thankfully, though, he survived
the attack.
Since then, Borden has been at Walter
Reed Army Medical Center, in Washington, D.C., where typically he
has five hours of rehabilitation per day.
He has undergone 29 operations, with
another, hopefully final operation on the horizon.
He
hopes to return to active duty by next year.
Kutztown welcomed back Lt. Borden and his family — his father,
David, Sr.; mother, Tina;
sisters Ciara, a 2005
KU graduate, and Maggie; and brother, Nick, a 2007 KU graduate, for
the ceremony and game.
Borden was presented with a state proclamation, sponsored by Pa.
State Senators Michael O'Pake and Mike Waugh. He also received
a signed football by the 2008 Golden Bears, and a personalized
jersey with his name and number, 82, on it.
