Connolly |
Connolly, who
came off the bench to score 11 points, hit a 3-pointer with 1:22
left in overtime to give KU an 80-77 lead in the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference crossover. California cut it to 80-78
with a free throw and Alioune Mbaye missed a jumper with five
seconds left, but teammate Gregory Parker was fouled after
collecting the rebound. He, however, missed his second of two
free throws with four seconds left to hand KU the win.
Dennis finished
with a game-high 24 points, his sixth game of 20 or more points in
KU’s last eight contests.
California (9-4)
found itself in foul trouble late in the second half and had to play
the overtime session without three of its starters, as Ron Banks,
Julian Logan and James Hairston fouled out. Banks led the Vulcans
with 20 points and Hairston had 12.
KU (8-5) led by as
many as seven heading into the final five minutes of the game, but
California fought back to make it a one-point contest at 63-62.
Connolly pushed it out to 66-62 with a layup and a free throw with
2:13 left, but that was the last basket the Golden Bears scored in
regulation.
California began to
foul and KU converted 7-of-10 free throws as the Vulcans, who had
made just two 3-pointers in the first 38 minutes, used three 3s in
the final 31 seconds to tie the game at 73.
Joe Berenato was
responsible for two of the 3-pointers, including the game-tying shot
with one second left force overtime.
Dave Ben (jr.
Coatesville/Coatesville) and Andre Woodlin (jr.
Philadelphia/Central) also finished in double digits with 14 and
12 points, respectively. Ben also made three 3-pointers and had
eight rebounds.
The Golden Bears,
after starting 1-3, are 7-2 in their last nine games.
KU will begin PSAC
East play at 8 p.m. Wednesday when the Golden Bears host Mansfield
University at Keystone Hall.
