BOXSCORE
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— Cheyney's Robbie Simpson scored a game-high 24 points and helped
the Wolves hand the Kutztown University men’s basketball team its
first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division loss
81-75 Saturday at Keystone Hall.
Simpson led five
Cheyney (12-6, 5-1 PSAC East) players in double digits.
Dave Ben (jr.
Coatesville/Coatesville) led KU (12-7, 4-1 PSAC East) with 20
points, while Andre Woodlin (jr. Philadelphia/Central) had
15, Ryan Washington (r-fr. Glendale/Wissahickon) 11 and Nate Edwards (so. Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic) 10.
KU led 42-39 at
halftime, but Cheyney outscored the Golden Bears 42-33 in the second
half, including a 25-11 run midway through the half which turned an
eight-point KU lead into a six-point deficit at 64-58 with 9:20 left
to play.
The Golden Bears
went on a 9-4 run to cut the Wolves’ lead to one point with 2:41
left, but Dominique Curry, who finished with 15 points and 10
rebounds, extended the lead back out to three points with a layup
after Ben missed a dunk.
Cheyney’s Tyrone
Smith, who also had 15 points and 11 rebounds, made a layup to make
it 72-67 with 1:02 left, and the Wolves closed out the game by
hitting seven consecutive free throws.
All seven were
needed to keep the contest at a two-possession game as Ben and
Edwards both converted late 3s to keep KU close.
The Golden Bears
struggled at the free-throw line, making 16-of-23, which included a
4-for-10 start in the first half.
KU shot 33.3
percent from the field in the second half, making just nine field
goals, after converting 17-of-36 (47.2 percent) in the first half.
