SCORE
CHEYNEY, Pa.
— Kutztown University's men's basketball team regained a share
of the PSAC East lead with a 79-71 upset win at Cheyney on Saturday.
KU controls its own destiny in its bid to win
the PSAC East regular season title, which KU can claim at least a
share of with a win vs. East Stroudsburg next Saturday. KU can
clinch a home playoff game in the first round with the win vs. ESU,
or a Cheyney win over Millersville on Wednesday.
(update on 2.25.08-due to a misinterpretation of PSAC tiebreaker
procedure, KU has NOT clinched a home playoff game for the first
round, as was previously reported).
Five players scored
in double figures for Kutztown (17-8, 9-2 PSAC East), led by Nate
Edwards, Dave Ben and Stephen Dennis all pouring
in 16. Andre Woodlin added 13 and Jeremy Coombs
scored 10. Ryan Washington had eight points and 10
rebounds.
Tyrone Smith scored
21 points for the Wolves (17-8, 9-2 PSAC East). Edwin Braswell
scored 11 and Robbie Simpson had 10.
The game was a
see-saw affair, with 12 lead changes and 10 ties. Ten of the
lead changes came in the second half alone.
Edwards hit
a three pointer with 6:18 left for a 65-63 lead. Woodlin
hit 1-of-2 from the line and Washington sank two charity
shots for a 68-63 lead with 4:30 left.
Braswell and Smith
hit back-to-back three pointers for a 69-68 lead with 3:05 left.
Then Ben
took over. The junior guard had steals on consecutive Cheyney
possessions, drew fouls and hit two free throws after both for a
72-69 lead with 2:07 remaining. After Ben drew a charge
on the next Wolf possession, Washington hit a layup with 1:39
left.
Cheyney managed
just one field goal from there, and KU was 5-of-8 from the line to
seal it.
The Wolves still
have the inside track to the No. 1 seed and the right to host the
final four, needing a win at Millersville Wednesday to claim that
right and at
least a share of the PSAC East title.
KU hosts
non-conference foe Columbia Union on Wednesday, before ending the
regular season at home against East Stroudsburg next Saturday.
