November 20, 2007

Kutztown (1-0)        77
Wilmington (1-2)     70

BOXSCORE

KUTZTOWN, Pa.Stephen Dennis (so. West Chester/Henderson) led a group of four double-digit scorers with 18 and the Kutztown University men’s basketball team converted 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to hold off Wilmington College 77-70 Tuesday at Keystone Hall.

Leading by 10 with 2:54 left, KU (1-0) allowed Wilmington (1-2) to creep back into the non-conference contest and make it a three-point game at 72-69 with 36 seconds left.

Dennis, however, made two free throws to push the lead back out to five and help seal the home-opening win for the Golden Bears. He finished 6-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Andre Woodlin (jr. Philadelphia/Central) nearly had a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Dave Ben (jr. Coatesville/Coatesville) scored 15 points and had seven rebounds. Sean McKeon (sr. Phoenixville/Phoenixville) posted 10 points.

Wilmington was led by Taurean Temple’s 20 points, and Antonio Sherrod and Mike Shipman each had 18 and 14 points, respectively.

KU opened with a 13-1 run to start the game, fueled by a technical foul on Wilmington and poor shot selections. Wilmington made just 29.5 percent of its shots from the floor in the first half, while KU made 55.2 percent en route to a 38-32 halftime lead.

Both teams switched identities in the second half, with Wilmington shooting 43.3 percent and KU 28.6. That allowed Wilmington to ease its way back into the game and eventually threaten to tie the game. But its 23 turnovers hurt Wilmington in the end.

Nate Edwards (so. Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic) came up with a game-high five steals, while Dennis had four. Dennis also had a team-high five assists.

KU went to the line a total of 30 times, converting on 22 of its free throws. The Golden Bears lost the battle on the boards 55-42.

The Golden Bears will return to the court when they travel to Goldey-Beacom at 7 p.m. next Tuesday for a non-conference matchup.
