BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA – Kutztown University junior guard Dave Ben scored
his 1,000th career point in leading Kutztown University
to a 90-71 win over Chestnut Hill College Saturday afternoon.
The win
was the 100th in eighth-year head coach Bernie
Driscoll’s career. His record is an even 100-100, having won 89
games over the last six years after an 11-40 start.
Ben
was one of three players to score 16 points for the Golden Bears
(5-4), to become the 18th player in school history to
reach 1,000 points. His milestone came on a layup with 13:12 left
in the first half. He is KU’s first 1,000 point scorer since Bilal
Salaam and Bobby Eberhart reached the plateau in 2004-05. His 16
points brought his career total to 1,011, good for 16th
place on KU’s career scoring list. Ben also led Kutztown
with 13 rebounds.
Andre Woodlin and Nate Edwards also scored 16 points for
KU, while Stephen Dennis added 15 and Ryan Washington
netted 12.
The
game was tight early, with five ties and five lead changes over the
first nine minutes. Kutztown went on a 10-2 run for a 27-19 lead
with 7:12 remaining in the first half.
The Golden Bears led 40-31 at halftime, but the Griffins
chipped away at the lead. Chestnut Hill knotted the score at 53
with 12:20 left in the game. Kevin Hafera’s jumper on KU’s
next possession gave the Golden Bears the lead, and ignited a 14-4
run over the next five minutes to give Kutztown control. KU led by
as many as 22 down the stretch.
Larz Jeter led four Griffins (0-8) in double figures with
17. Brandon Williams added 16, L.B. Rebstock had 14 and Trenton
Davidheiser scored 11.
Kutztown returns to action next Saturday with a PSAC
crossover against Indiana (PA) at Keystone Hall.
