BOXSCORE

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Missed free throws kept the Kutztown University men’s basketball team alive, but the Golden Bears couldn’t hit the game-tying shot throughout the final minute, falling 87-84 to Edinboro University Wednesday at Keystone Hall.

Edinboro (6-3) missed 9-of-14 free-throw attempts in the final 1:39 to allow KU (4-4) to keep the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover contest close, but the Golden Bears missed four 3-pointers in the same time frame.

Stephen Dennis (so. West Chester/Henderson), who tied a career-high with 30 points, missed a 3-pointer with the Fighting Scots leading 85-82, and Dave Ben (jr. Coatesville/Coatesville), who scored 17 points to close to within five of 1,000 for his career, missed a desperation 3 at the buzzer.

KU led for the entire first half and for the first five minutes of the second half until Edinboro went on a 10-2 run to take a 54-51 lead. Gilmore Cummings started the run with a 3-pointer and Joseph Jones capped it with one of his five 3s. Jones finished with a team-high 23 points, while Cummings hit three 3s to finish with 14 points.

The Fighting Scots created separation with an 11-4 run to make it 65-55 with 10:42 left. KU cut the lead to five with 6:23 remaining, but Edinboro extended its lead to 10 again after Jones hit another 3 with 4:28 showing on the clock.

KU began to foul to try to climb back into the game, and at first, the strategy wasn’t working as Edinboro connected on six consecutive free throws to take an 82-75 lead with 2:03 left. But things fell apart for Edinboro at the line after that.

Dennis, on the other hand, had a solid night at the line, hitting 10-of-12 free throws. The 6-foot-5 guard recorded 10 rebounds to collect the double-double. He also hit two 3s and finished with three steals and two blocks. His 30 points tied the career-high mark he set against Penn State-Berks on Dec. 8.

Ben had five assists and two 3s, while Jeremy Coombs (so. Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic) posted 10 points and six rebounds.

Devon Knight scored 13 points for the Fighting Scots, while Ryan McLemore recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. He also had three blocks. Gerald Warrick had 11 rebounds and nine points.

KU will return to the court on Dec. 29 at Chesnut Hill for a 1 p.m. nonconference matchup.
