KU's MAGICAL SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE Gannon
84, Kutztown 73
BOXSCORE
ERIE, Pa.
—
Dave Ben (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville)
scored 19 points,
but it wasn't enough as the Kutztown University men's
basketball team saw its magical 2008-09 season come to a
close Tuesday night with an 84-73 loss at Gannon in the
Atlantic Regional final.
The record-breaking Golden
Bears finish with a 28-5 record. “I
think we represented the University well,” KU's ninth-year head
coach Bernie Driscoll said. “The kids played well. We kind of wish
we could have gone one step further, but Gannon is a great
basketball team and you have to give them credit. They beat us three
times.”
KU didn't make it easy again for Gannon, taking
an early lead thanks to 14 first-half points from
Ryan Washington (so. Philadelphia/Wissahickon),
who was named to the region's all-tournament team. He finished with
16 points.
Stephen Dennis (jr. West Chester/Henderson),
who also was named to the all-tournament team, finished with 16
points, but didn't score in the first half as he sat with two fouls
early.
KU led early, taking a five-point lead at 24-19
with 8:52 left, but Gannon clawed back into the game to take a 42-37
lead into halftime.
After an early run gave Gannon an 11-point lead
with 18:16 left, KU went on a 7-0 run, fueled by back-to-back
jumpers by Dennis and Ben, to cut it to four at 48-44.
Both team exchanged points to make it 50-46 and Gannon took
off on a 15-0 run to make it a 19-point game. KU managed to
cut it to nine late, but Gannon continued to gather rebounds
and seal the win. During the Knights’
15-0 run, they had eight possessions and converted 7-of-8 field
goals. Kutztown was 0-for-6 during that stretch with two turnovers.
Kyle Goldcamp, the tournament MVP, scored 21 points and had
11 rebounds. Pierre Howard finished with 17 points, Joe
Lindsey had 15 and Tyler Stoczynski had 13.

Washington, Bower hit career highs, KU moving on to region final
ERIE, Pa.
—
Ryan Washington (so. Philadelphia/Wissahickon)
stepped up big for the Kutztown University men's basketball team,
scoring a career-high 28 points in a 92-86 win over Indiana (Pa.) in
the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region semifinals Sunday at Hammermill
Center.
Washington shot
12-of-14 from the floor for the Golden Bears (28-4), who shot 53.7
percent for the game, including a 54.5 percent clip from 3-point
range.
Mark Bower (sr. West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford)
also scored a career-high 16 points, as KU had five players in
double figures.
For Washington, the
career-high came against his old team and helped out his teammates
Stephen Dennis (jr. West Chester/Henderson)
and
Dave Ben (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville).
KU's two leading scorers managed a combined one point after
halftime.
"It's big for me to
step up," Washington said. "I'm not the leading scorer on this team,
so it's big to step up."
He picked the
biggest of games to do so, advancing KU into its first regional
final in school history. The Golden Bears have already won more
games overall and in the postseason than any other team in school
history.
Dennis finished with
13 points and Ben scored nine, falling just two short of 2,000 for
his career.
Julius Gray (so. Lincoln/Oxford)
had his second straight double-digit game, posting 11 points. He had
one of KU's six 3-pointers.
The Golden Bears
started the game off hitting all six of its 3-point attempts,
opening up the paint for Washington and Bower to work.
KU never trailed in
the game, building a 15-point lead at 31-16 with 8:40 left in the
first half. The Golden Bears hot shooting forced Indiana to use all
but one of its allotted timeouts in the half.
Driscoll, who is 2-0
in the NCAA tournament, took his Golden Bears into the locker room
with a 50-39 lead, but an injury to Dennis limited his play in the
second half. Dennis is expected to be ready to go for Tuesday's
final.
Indiana cut into the
lead and made it a four-point game at 65-61 with 9:53 left, but a
12-5 run led by eight points from Washington made it 77-66, sealing
it for KU.
KU will face No.
1-seeded Gannon at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hammermill Center.

semifinals Sunday.

Dennis drops 31, KU wins first NCAA tournament game in school
history
ERIE, Pa.
—
Stephen Dennis (jr. West Chester/Henderson)
scored 31 points to lead the Kutztown
University men’s basketball team to its first NCAA Division II
tournament win with a 99-88 first-round win over West Virginia State
Saturday at Hammermill Center.
Dennis poured in
21 of his 31 points in the second half as the Golden Bears (27-4)
overcame a six-point deficit midway through the second to advance to
the Atlantic Region semifinals where they’ll face Indiana
(Pa.) at 5 p.m. Sunday.
"We're not ready to
go home," Dennis said. "We just got here."
One of six KU
players in double figures, Dennis scored eight straight points to
lead the Golden Bears out of a six-point hole and into a two-point
lead at 60-58 with 11:41 left.
West Virginia
State (24-6) trailed the rest of the way as KU pushed it to a
double-digit lead with a huge 3-pointer from
Julius Gray (so. Lincoln/Oxford),
one of his two of the game.
Gray, who
finished with 10 points, was set up in the corner for the big 3 by
Ryan Washington (so. Philadelphia/Wissahickon).
Washington drove
into the paint acting like he was going to lay it in and at the last
second, he dished it out to the right corner where Gray was standing
for the big 3.
Washington
finished with 18 points and eight rebounds.
Andre Woodlin (sr. Philadelphia/Central),
who totaled 14 points — seven of which came from the free-throw line
— led the Golden Bears with seven assists.
KU used several
cuts to the basket to set up points early, including a long pass
from Woodlin to Dennis leading to a dunk and a 4-4 tie early on. The
Golden Bears built up a seven-point lead at 13-6 early, but West
Virginia State stuck around with tough shooting of Darren Jones and
Ted Scott, who combined for 59 points in the game.
The Golden Bears
led 43-39 at halftime and pushed their lead to six points early in
the second half, but a 13-1 run by the Yellow Jackets gave them a
58-52 lead with 13:58 left.
Dennis took over
from there leading KU to its school record 27th win of the season.
"The paint just
started to open up for me in the second half," Dennis said.
Dave Ben (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville)
finished with 13 points and
Mark Bower (sr. West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford)
had 11, including two early 3-pointers.
Ben’s 13 points
moves him to within 11 of 2,000 for his career.
KU shot 55
percent for the game, including an unstoppable 69.6 percent in the
second half.
