Dennis
named PSAC East Player of the Week
KUTZTOWN, PA.
(January 11, 2010) –
Kutztown University senior guard and Division II national Player of
the Year candidate Stephen Dennis (West Chester/Henderson)
was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern
Division Player of the Week.
It was the
second time this season Dennis has earned PSAC East Player of the Week
honors. He earned the award on Dec. 14. A Kutztown student-athlete has been
named PSAC East Player of the Week four consecutive times. Junior forward
Ryan Washington (Philadelphia/Wissahickon) was the PSAC East Player of
the Week on Dec. 23 and Jan. 3.
Dennis,
who has scored 1,883 career points, enjoyed a strong week during a perfect
week for undefeated Kutztown, ranked sixth in the latest NABC/Division II
Top 25 poll. In helping Kutztown improve its overall record to 12-0 and
continue its best start in more than 90 years, Dennis averaged 25.7 points,
9.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists. He also made 56.1 percent of his shots in
scoring 20 or more points in victories over Goldey-Beacom, Edinboro and Lock
Haven.
Dennis
finished with 22 points and made the game-winning shot with 1.8 seconds
remaining in a 76-74 road victory over Goldey-Beacom. Dennis was 9-for-16 in
the win over GBC with five rebounds and five assists.
In a 96-88
PSAC crossover win at Edinboro, Dennis scored 29 points, pulled down a
season-high 15 rebounds, one shy of his career high, and seven assists as
the Golden Bears earned their first victory in program history at Edinboro’s
McComb Fieldhouse.
Dennis had a
breathtaking stretch of basketball against Edinboro midway through the
second half in which he scored 13 of KU’s points during a 17-4 run that
gave the Golden Bears control of the game midway through the second half.
Dennis was
11-for-21 from the floor against the Fighting Scots.
He
concluded the week by scoring 26 points and pulling seven rebounds on
12-for-20 shooting in a 71-66 victory over Lock Haven. For the season,
Dennis leads the PSAC in scoring (24.5 points per game), is second in
assists (5.8) and sixth in steals (2.2). Dennis has scored 20 or more points
in nine of Kutztown’s last 10 games.
Kutztown
returns to action Wednesday night when it hosts undefeated East Stroudsburg
(13-0) at Keystone Arena beginning at 8 p.m.
