Zeek, who is 23-12 for the Golden Bears
this season, will open up the 157-pound
bracket with a bout against two-time NCAA Champion Antonio Guerra
(32-9), from the University of Findlay. The three-time All-American
has titles at 149 and 157.
“Were’ always excited to
have someone out there,” KU coach Robert Fisher said. “He has a good
chance at placing. He has a tough first-round match against a
two-time national champion, but who knows. Dave has shown that he is
capable of pulling the upset.”
Guerra is not a stranger
to KU. Two years ago, during his run for the 149-pound title, he
defeated KU’s Chris Chambers (jr. Holland/Council Rock South)
in the quarterfinals. That bout could help Zeek pull off the upset
he needs to advance through the championship bracket.
“We went back in our
memory banks and we drew up some strategies from that match for
Dave,” Fisher said.
The winner of Zeek and
Geurra’s contest will face the winner of the first-round bout
between Adams State’s Noomis Jones (22-10) and St. Cloud State’s
John Sundgren (22-7).
Zeek is making his first
trip to the NCAA Division II Championships after going 8-13 during
his freshman year. He is third on the team this season in pins with
five, with his fastest coming in 33 seconds. He also has three major
decisions and a technical fall.
He finished sixth at the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships on Dec. 5,
falling 7-1 in a fifth-place match to Shippensburg Dan Nauman, who
is in the field of 16 wrestles in the 157-pound bracket.
It wasn’t the last time
the two wrestlers would meet up on the mats.
In a regular-season dual
meet bout, Nauman won 11-5, and he won again in the quarterfinals of
the NCAA East Regionals, posting an 8-6 decision.
Zeek, however, fought through the consolation bracket and put himself in a position to
take third at the East Regionals, but Nauman stood in the way once
again, pinning Zeek in 4:59.
Zeek and Nauman are on
opposite sides of the 157-pound bracket, however, so in order for
the wrestlers to meet again, it would have to be either the
championship bout or somewhere in the consolation bracket.
The Golden Bears had
success at last year's championships. Joe
Kemmerer (rs. Mountaintop/Crestwood), who is redshirting this
season, won the crown at 133 pounds last season. He was the first
wrestler in KU history to win a national title.
The first round will
start at 11 a.m. Friday with 80 matches to take place on six mats.
Second-round matches, as well as first and second round
consolations, are scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday.
The championship
semifinals, third-round consolation and consolation semifinals will
kick off Saturday’s action at 10 a.m. The championship finals will
start at 7 p.m. Saturday.
