TWO OVERTIME WINS PROPEL KU TO 19-16 WIN OVER VISITING YORK COLLEGE

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University wrestling team used two overtime wins from Rob Vollrath (fr. Richboro/Council Rock South) and Scott Snyder (so. Slatington/Northern Lehigh) to defeat York College 19-16 at Keystone Hall Friday in non-conference action.

Snyder, at 197, picked up the overtime win which pushed the match out to six points at 19-13, and all Kevin Bolinsky (fr. Ashland/North Schuylkill), at heavyweight, had to do was avoid the pin.

Bolinsky fell 5-2, giving up two takedowns in the second period to York’s Luke Panizzi, which proved to be the difference.

Without Snyder’s 3-1 overtime win over Dennis Conklin, Bolinsky’s loss would have turned the tables on KU (10-3-1) and gave York (14-6) the three-point win.

But Snyder, who managed an escape in the third period to tie the bout at 1, quickly went to work in overtime and took down Conklin for the two points and the win.

Vollrath's 4-3 overtime win over York's Sean Hightman, KU's first victory of the match, wasn’t as easy.

The match was tied at 1-1 going into overtime, and was scoreless going into the second period of overtime. Vollrath chose bottom, and registered the escape point to go up 2-1, and Hightman earned an escape point after an illegal hold by Vollrath as the match went into the fourth overtime. Hightman earned another escape point to go up 3-2. Vollrath tied up the score with an escape and earned the one-point for riding time to take the decision 4-3.

Chris Chambers (jr. Holland/Council Rock South), Dave Zeek (so. Newtown/Council Rock North), Curtis Beardsell (jr. Warminster/William Tennent) and Kyle Davis (so. Peckville/Valley View) also won bouts for KU.

In Chambers’ victory at 149 pounds, he held a 4-3 advantage going into the third period, but Erik George didn’t relent the pressure. Chambers, however, was able to score two points with a reversal to extend his lead 6-3. George scored a late escape point to make the score 6-4, but it wasn’t enough as Chambers came away with the hard-earned decision to cut York’s lead to 9-6.

Zeek, at 157, earned a hard fought victory over one of York’s top grapplers in John Niedrich, edging the Spartan 4-2 and tying up the team score at 9-9.

After Brian Alwine registered a major decision at 165, Beardsell answered with a major decision at 174 of his own as he defeated Jaime Arze 14-6.

In a critical match, Davis faced off against Chris Elliott, of York, at 184. The match was tied 3-3 after the first period and Elliott scored an early takedown to make the score to 5-3. With the score knotted at 7 heading into the third period, Davis earned three near fall points and to take the lead 10-7. Elliott made a late push to make the score 10-9, but Davis was able to hold him off and secure the hard-fought 11-9 decision and give KU the lead for the first time on the night 16-13.

KU will return to action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday against Shippensburg University at Keystone Hall.
