Kutztown's Joe Kemmerer Wins PSAC Wrestling Title

ERIE, Pa.Joe Kemmerer (sr. Mountaintop/Crestwood) won the 133 pound title at the 2008 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Wrestling Championship Saturday night at Mercyhurst College.

Kemmerer, KU's first PSAC wrestling champion since 1942, picked up the title with a 2-1 tiebreaker decision over two-time defending champion and top-seeded Rick Duebel of Edinboro.  Kemmerer, the No. 2 seed, avenges a loss to Duebel in the 2006-07 PSAC wrestling championships.

Kemmerer fell behind for the first time this season, when Duebel escaped early in the second period for a 1-0 lead. Kemmerer evened the match with an escape at the 1:44 mark of the third period and the match went to overtime.

With no scoring in overtime, Duebel elected to take the down position in the first tiebreaker.  Kemmerer held on for the entire 30 seconds to keep it 1-1.  Kemmerer escaped at 26 seconds in the second tiebreaker to win the match, 2-1.

The Crestwood High School graduate transferred to KU prior to the 2006-07 season. He went on to win the NCAA Division II Championship that year before redshirting last season. (133 lb. title match play-by-play courtesy of Edinboro Sports Information)

Kemmerer joins KU Athletics Hall of Famers Bruce Becker (1942) and Edward Osinski (1941, 1942) as a PSAC Champion.

In the 197-pound bracket, Scott Snyder (jr. Slatington/Northen Lehigh) finished out the day in fifth place. He won his first match against Scott Gallo of Mercyhurst by a score of 5-3 before getting pinned by Pat Bradshaw in the semifinals. Snyder dropped a 3-2 decision to Jamie Luckett and bounced back with a medical forfeit over Gallo.
