Kemmerer moves to 15-0, KU falls 23-13 to Pitt-Johnstown

KUTZTOWN, Pa — Joe Kemmerer (sr. Mountain Top/Crestwood) remained undefeated on the season, but the Kutztown University wrestling team fell 23-13 to the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown Monday at Keystone Hall.

The Golden Bears (3-2-1) picked up just three victories in the loss.

Kemmerer, at 133 pounds, led the way with an 11-0 major decision over Matt Scherich. Kemmerer is now 15-0 and has won his last 26 bouts dating back to his 2006-07 national championship season.

John Paukovits (so. Northampton/Northampton) and David Zeek (jr. Newtown/Council Rock North) each picked up wins for KU, as well.

Paukovits, at 141, decisioned Adam Whetstone 9-4 for back-to-back wins at the end of the match, however, the Mountain Cats led 23-6 heading into Kemmerer’s bout.

Zeek earned the first six points for KU, picking up a forfeit win at 165 pounds.

Chris Chambers (sr. Holland/Council Rock South), in the second bout of the match at 157 pounds, led 4-3 with less than 10 seconds remaining in the bout, but Mazen Kholi recorded a takedown to win 5-4.

Heavyweight Kevin Bolinsky (so. Ashland/North Schuylkill) also lost a close match after leading through two periods, as Chris Dempsey used an escape and riding time to pick up the 2-1 win.

KU will return to the mats at 7 p.m. Wednesday to face King’s College at Keystone Hall.
