WASHINGTON, PA (November 14,
2009) - The Kutztown University wrestling team kicked off
the 2009-10 season at the Washington and Jefferson Open on
Saturday afternoon, with freshmen Austin Williams (Pen Argyl/Pen
Argyl) and Alex Depew (Wilson/Northampton) leading
the way.Williams,
wrestling in the 133-pound weight class, finished in fourth
place. Williams started off his collegiate career at KU with a
16-6 major decision over Thiel's Tommy Kozak. In the second
round, Williams was edged out 4-1 before three-straight major
decisions in the consolation round. Williams was topped by
Nathan Pennesi of WVU for third place.
Depew took fifth place, starting
out strong with a pin 1:49 into his first match as a Golden
Bear. After a loss to Shippensburg's Chris Barrick sent him to
the consolation bracket, Depew earned a 17-6 major decision over
Nate Reese of Shippensburg. The 174-pounder pinned his next
opponent at 2:18 in the first period before falling to Steve
Makin of Pitt-Johnstown.
Derek Schmelyun (New
Oxford/Bermudian Springs) made a strong showing in his
freshman debut. Schmelyun recorded three wins, including a pin,
wrestling in the 149 weight class.
Another freshman making a great
start to his collegiate career was 285 pound Justin Grant
(Easton/Easton). Grant finished the open with a 3-2 record.
Senior Brett Martinez
(Slatington/Northern Lehigh) had three wins and sophomore
Clayton Youtz (Dauphin/Central Dauphin) finished with two.
The Golden Bears will return to
action next Saturday with a dual at American International
starting at noon.
