Golden Bears
knock off No. 13 West Liberty State
WEST LIBERTY, WV (January 16,
2010) - The Kutztown University men's wrestling team swept
its dual matches over West Liberty State and Seton Hill on
Saturday afternoon.
After a dominating 40-6 win over
Seton Hill, the Golden Bears (6-2) took down No. 13 ranked West
Liberty State by a score of 20-16.
Tim Darling
(Nazareth/Nazareth)
gave the
Golden Bears their winning difference, with a major decision at
184 pounds for a 20-10 lead. Darling, who joined the Golden
Bears in the spring semester, has improved to 3-0 on the season
with a pin and two major decisions.
The match
started out heavily in KU's favor with a pin from
Chris
Sheetz (Barto/Upper Perkiomen), his second pin of the
day. Sheetz took down the Hilltopper's Sean Jordan at three
minutes, 46 seconds for a 6-0 lead. His pin fall against Seton
Hill came at two minutes, 25 seconds.
John
Paukovits (Northampton/Northampton) extended the Golden
Bears lead to 9-3 after earning a 6-3 decision at 141 pounds.
Derek Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs)
gave the Golden Bears a 13-7 cushion by taking out Brian Leggett
with a flawless 11-0 major decision.
David
Zeek (Newtown/Council Rock North) won both of his
matches on the day, winning 5-2 against West Liberty State and
pinning against Seton Hill in five minutes, 46 seconds.
In the Golden
Bears win against Seton Hill five pin falls were recorded.
Darling
earned the quickest fall, pinning his opponent in 90 seconds.
Also with pins in the first period were Sheetz (2:25) and
Kevin
Bolinsky (Ashland/North Schuylkill) in two minutes, 47
seconds.
The other two
pins came
Brett Martinez (Slatington/Northern
Lehigh)
at 149
pounds in 4 minutes, 45 seconds.
Paukovits
(141 pounds) and Williams (133 pounds) each won their bouts by
major decision.
Scott
Snyder (Slatington/Northern Lehigh) edged out Nick
Padezar in a 4-3 decision.
"It was just
a good day all around for our team today," said head coach
Rob Fisher. "We had a strong showing today in both matches.
The win against West Liberty State was huge, to beat a team as
strong as them. It gives us a lot of confidence to build on as
we go through the season."
The Golden Bears will travel to
Newberry College next weekend for the Eastern Regional Duals on
Friday and Saturday.
