KU ANNOUNCES YEAR-END AWARD WINNERS AT ALL-SPORT BANQUET
Finalists for Athletes, Coaches of the Year also named

KUTZTOWN, PA – The Kutztown University Athletic Department announced the winners of its Senior Athletes and Rookies of the Year awards and the finalists for Athletes and Coaches of the Year at the annual All-Sport Banquet in Keystone Field House Tuesday, May 6. 

            Shaun Landis (sr. Milton/Warrior Run), of the men's track team, earned Senior Athlete of the Year honors for men's sports, and Kellie Evans (sr. Glen Burnie, MD/North County), of the softball team, won the women's Senior Athlete of the Year award.  T.J. Mann (jr. Glen Mills/Malvern Prep), of the men's basketball team and Jessica May (fr. West Lawn/Wilson), of the golf team, have earned the Male and Female Rookie of the Year honors, respectively.   

            The senior athlete awards are based on overall career achievement, and the rookie awards are given to athletes who are in their first year of intercollegiate athletics.

            Shaun Landis is a nine-time All PSAC athlete--triple jump (5), high jump (2), javelin (1), and pentathlon (1).  He is also a five-time PSAC triple jump champion--indoor (3), outdoor (2).  Landis is the school record holder in the indoor high jump (6-9) and pentathlon.  He also holds the Outdoor Triple Jump record (49-2 3/4).  Last spring, Landis was named outstanding athlete at the PSAC Outdoor Championships, after placing in four events to lead KU to its third-straight team championship.  He went on to earn All-America honors, placing second in the decathlon at the NCAA Division II Championships. He was named PSAC Track & Field Rookie of the Year in 2000.  His final season of outdoor track & field will conclude this month with the PSAC Championships at Lock Haven (May 8-10) and a possible trip to the NCAA Championships at Edwardsville, IL (May 22-24).

            Kellie Evans is an All-American and four-time All-PSAC athlete. She is a three-time member of the ECAC All-Star team and four-time All-Mid-Atlantic Region selection.  Evans currently holds KU records for home runs and slugging percentage in a single season.  She also holds KU career hitting records for triples, home runs, RBI and total basses.  As a pitcher, Evans holds KU career records for complete games and shutouts.  Among her many honors, she was named the 2000 PSAC Rookie of the Year.

            T.J. Mann was named PSAC Rookie of the Week six times this season.  Mann was KU's second leading scorer (12.0 points per game) and rebounder (7.3 per game)--helping the team to 18 wins, the second most in team history.  The Golden Bears qualified for the PSAC Playoffs for the first time since 1999.  Mann started 27 of 28 games, scoring in double-digits 20 times and recording six “double-doubles” in points and rebounds.

          Jessica May led KU to its best-ever score at PSAC Championships.  She shot an 80 on the first day of competition - the best round ever by a KU golfer.  May was named the PSAC tournament MVP, as she became the first KU golfer to finish ahead of any men's players (KU is the only team of the six PSAC golf squads that is female). 

            The finalists for Athletes and Coaches of the Year were also named at the banquet. The winners of these awards will be named at the Hall of Fame and Athletic Awards banquet on May 30.   

            The finalists for Male Athlete of the Year are Jeff Brickus (jr. Coatesville/Coatesville), of the men's basketball team, Pete Mendez (sr. Souderton/Souderton), of the football team, and Scott Eisenhart (sr. York/Spring Grove), of the track & field team.  The women's finalists include Niya Adams (jr. King of Prussia/Upper Merion), of the cross country and track & field teams, Kellie Evans (sr. Glen Burnie, MD/North County), of the softball team, and Missy Klein (sr. Havertown/Cardinal O'Hara), of the volleyball team. 

            Jeff Brickus earned first-team All-PSAC East honors, after finishing second in the league in assists, and first in steals.  He led KU in points (16.0 per game), assists (4.6 per game), and steal (49). 

            Scott Eisenhart earned All-America honors by placing second in the 400m at the NCAA Indoor Championships.  He was also named PSAC Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year.  His outdoor season is in progress.    

            Pete Mendez earned several All-America honors and became a four-time All-PSAC East selection as well. He broke the KU records for interceptions in a game (4) and in a career (21). 

            Niya Adams is the PSAC Indoor Champion in 800m and a member of the record-holding 4x800 team.  Adams is currently ranked first in the PSAC in the outdoor 800m.  She is the two-time defending 800 champion at the PSAC meet, which will be held this week. 

            Kellie Evans, a pitcher/designated hitter, leads her team in wins (8-2), complete game (8).  She is hitting .321 with a team-high 25 RBI at the plate this season.  Evans and the Golden Bears will be in action starting Thursday a the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals in Shippensburg. 

            Missy Klein earned All-PSAC East first-team honors after leading KU to its first-ever Division title last fall.  She holds school records for career kills (1,142) and digs (1.327), while setting the single season KU marks for kills (445) and digs (532) this season. 

            The finalists for men's Coach of the Year are baseball's Chris Blum, basketball's Bernie Driscoll, tennis’ Suresh Ramamurthi and track & field's Brian Mondschein.  The finalists for women's Coach of the Year are volleyball's John Gump, cross country's Ray Hoffman, and softball's Judy Lawes.           

Chris Blum and his players finished the regular season with a 24-13 record, 17-7 and tied for second in the PSAC East.  KU, which did not qualify for the PSAC Playoffs, may see its season continue at regionals next weekend. 

            Brian Monschein guided the men’s track & field team to their best ever national showing - a 10th place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships.  He coached two All-America athletes.  His outdoor season will conclude this month at the PSAC and NCAA Outdoor Championships.              

           Bernie Driscoll led the men's basketball team to the second-most wins in school history.  The team was 18-10 overall, 8-4 in the PSAC East.  His squad qualified for the PSAC playoffs for the first time since 1999. 

            Suresh Ramamurthi’s men’s tennis team finished the year with a 17-5 record.  The Golden Bears placed second in the PSAC Championship, and went on to win its second-straight NCAA East Regional qualifier.  KU placed ninth at the NCAA Championships.  Ramamurthi’s players included four All-PSAC selections, the PSAC Athlete and Rookie of the Year.

            John Gump led the volleyball team to a 21-13 overall record, including an 8-2 mark in the PSAC East and share of their first-ever division title.  He coached four All-PSAC players, including the PSAC Rookie of the Year. 

            Ray Hoffman coached his team to a fourth place finish at PSAC Championships and sixth at NCAA East Regionals.   

            Judy Lawes won her 400th career game this season becoming the first coach--male or female--to achieve that milestone.  Her team finished third in the PSAC East and has qualified for the NCAA Reigonal tournament this week at Shippensburg.
