KU ANNOUNCES SENIOR ATHLETE, SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARDS
KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University athletic department
announced the recipients of its senior athletes and senior
scholar-athletes of the year awards at the annual all-sport banquet
on April 29.
Steve Tyson (sr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion)
of
the men’s track and field team and Ashley Singer (sr.
Lititz/Warwick) of the women’s swimming team were named senior
athletes of the year, based on their four-year athletic
accomplishments. Stephanie Williams (sr. Harrisburg/Riverside)
of the cross-country/track team and Tom Cressman (sr.
Sellersville/Penn Ridge) of the football team, received awards
as KU’s top senior scholar-athletes based on a combination of their
career academic and athletic accomplishments.

Tyson,
KU’s 2005 Male Rookie of the Year, is a six-time PSAC
champion in the shot-put, as he captured the title every year of his
indoor track career and won the title twice during the outdoor
seasons, while qualifying for nationals twice. Tyson currently holds
KU’s outdoor shot put record, and has the second best throw in the
conference this season as he enters the PSAC Championships, at IUP,
May 1-3.

Singer
wrapped up her career as the KU record holder in seven events, the
100, 200, 500, 1,000 freestyles, 200 butterfly and the 800 free
relay. Singer was the 2008 PSAC Champion in the 500 free. She earned
All-PSAC in the 200 and 500 free in the 2006, 2007 and 2008 season.
She was named honorable mention All-America in the 200 and 500 free
in 2007, and was an NCAA qualifier in the 100, 200 and 500 free. For
her efforts in the 2007-08 season, Singer was named the Lehigh Valley
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Athlete of the Year.
Williams,
a
marketing major with a 3.46 GPA, was a 2007 PSAC Scholar-Athlete,
and was named to KU’s Dean’s List for the 2007 fall and spring
semesters. She is a two-time honoree of the USTFCCCA All-Academic
cross country team, as she received the award in her junior and
senior seasons. In her cross country career, Williams was a
two-time All-PSAC performer, placing ninth in 2006 and 10th 2007.
She was a two-time All-Region runner, as she placed fifth in 2006
and second in 2007, and earned a spot at nationals. In 2007,
Williams was named Lehigh Valley Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics for Female Athlete of the Year in
cross-country. Her track
and field career has been equally impressive. She was the 2007 PSAC
Champion in the 10,000, and has been a six-time All-PSAC performer.
She qualified for nationals in the 5,000 and was a provisional
qualifier in the 3K and 5K in the 2007 campaign.

Cressman,
an accounting major with a 3.71 GPA, was a three-time PSAC
Scholar-Athlete. He was named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-District First Team his senior season and was a second
team member his junior year. On the field, Cressman concluded his
career at KU with 193 career tackles, 10 sacks and five forced
fumbles as a three-year starting linebacker for the Golden Bears.
