KUTZTOWN RANKED 53rd IN DIRECTOR’s CUP STANDINGS
KUTZTOWN,
Pa.
— With the Kutztown University women’s field hockey and
volleyball teams finishing in the top 20 nationally, the Golden
Bears posted 75 points to tie for 53rd in Division II in the
final fall U.S. Sports Academy Director’s Cup standings. A
total of 124 Division II institutions scored points during the
fall season.
The field
hockey team, which finished 17-5 overall, finished fifth in the
nation. The Golden Bears started the season 10-0 and finished
with a 17-1 record outside its four games against the Division
II National Champion Bloomsburg Huskies.
The volleyball
team set a school record for wins with 28 and advanced to the
Atlantic Regionals where the Golden Bears went 1-1. They
finished 17th overall.
The U.S. Sports
Academy Director’s Cup was developed as a joint effort between
the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics
and the USA Today. The points are awarded based on each
institution’s finish in up to 14 sports — seven women’s and
seven men’s.
The race for
the Director's Cup continues with the winter and spring sports
seasons in 2008.

Elfren Quiles named to AP Little All-America Team
KUTZTOWN, PA – Kutztown University wide receiver Elfren Quiles
(sr. New Britain, Conn./New Britain) has been named to the
Associate Press Little All-America third team.
Quiles led the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and was
second in Division II with 118.7 yards per game. He finished the
season with a school record 1,187 yards and eight touchdowns on
64 receptions, which were the fourth most in school history. He
had a career game against Bloomsburg with 308 yards receiving.
Quiles has been selected to play in the Cactus Bowl – a Division
II all-star game, in January. He already participated in the
East Coast Bowl – a Mid-Atlantic All-Star game, in November.
Quiles was also a regional finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy.
The
All-America honor is the second in Quiles’ career. He was also
a third-team selection as a freshman while at Merrimack. He
transferred to Kutztown prior to the 2006 season and amassed
2,003 receiving yards in two seasons – fourth on KU’s career
list. His 43 TD catches (9th), 4,136 career
receiving yards (11th) and 252 receptions (13th)
all rank among the all-time Division II leaders.
Kutztown was 5-6 overall, 2-3 in the PSAC East this season.

Kutztown’s Brian Bingnear named Daktronics All-America
KUTZTOWN,
Pa. – Kutztown University safety Brian Bingnear (sr.
Boothwyn/Chichester), of the football team has been named to
the 2007 Daktronics, Inc. Division II All-America second team.
Bingnear was one of 52 players selected to the Daktronics first
and second teams, in voting conducted by the sports information
directors at Division II football playing institutions.
Bingnear earns his second career All-America honor, the first
from Daktronics. He was a third-team selection by the Football
Gazette in 2006.
This season, Bingnear led the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference in tackles with 118 total and 71 solo. He averaged
10.7 tackles per game and had four interceptions and five pass
breakups.
The 6-0 safety was previously named first-team Daktronics
All-Northeast Region and All-PSAC East In 2007. Last season, in
addition to his Football Gazette honor, Bingnear was a
first-team All-PSAC East and second-team Daktronics All-Region
pick.
Kutztown was 5-6 overall, 2-3 in the PSAC East this season.

KU ATHLETICS TO SUPPORT LOCAL FOOD DRIVE AT DEC. 18 AND 19
BASKETBALL DOUBLEHEADERS
KUTZTOWN, PA –
The Kutztown University athletic department will support a local
food drive at the men’s and women’s basketball doubleheaders on
Tuesday, Dec. 18 and Wednesday, Dec. 19 at Keystone Hall.
All
fans will be admitted free of charge with the donation of a
nonperishable food item or a monetary donation. All of the food
items and donations will then be forwarded to Friend, Inc., of
Kutztown, to support the Northeastern Berks Food Pantry.
Kutztown University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will
host Slippery Rock on Dec. 18, with the women’s game starting at
6 p.m. and the men’s game at 8. On Dec. 19, the Golden Bears
host Edinboro, with the women’s game at 6 and the men’s at 8.

WEIDENSAUL, DENNIS RECEIVE BASKETBALL HONORS
KUTZTOWN, PA –
Kutztown University basketball players Rachel Weidensaul (sr.
Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) and Stephen Dennis (so. West
Chester/Henderson), of the women’s and men’s teams,
respectively, have received honors announced this week.
Weidensaul was a double honoree. She was named the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Player of the
Week. She and Dennis were also named to the Lehigh Valley
College Basketball Media Organization (LVCBMO) Team of the Month
for December.
Weidensaul scored 16 points in both Kutztown contests, helping
guide the Golden Bears to a 2-0 record last week. The senior
hit 14-of-26 (53.8 percent) from the floor and added nine
rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks. In
Kutztown’s 81-54 victory against Penn State - Berks, Weidensaul
connected on 7-of-9 shots in just 13 minutes played.
For the season, Weidensaul is averaging 12.9
points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists through eight games. She
is shooting .372 from the floor and .476 from three-point
range. Kutztown is 5-3 on the season.
Dennis is averaging 17.5 points, 5.7 rebounds,
2.8 assists, 1.8 blocks and 2.5 steals per game. He ranks among
the PSAC leaders in all of those categories except rebounding,
for which he is less than a half rebound per game from the top
20. Dennis also leads KU in field goal percentage and free
throws made. The Golden Bear men are 3-3 on the season.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 18
against Slippery Rock at Keystone Hall.
The LVCBMO team of the month includes a player
from each of the participating institutions from the Lehigh
Valley – Cedar Crest, Delaware Valley, DeSales, East
Stroudsburg, Kutztown, Moravian and Muhlenberg.

QUILES
SELECTED TO PLAY IN CACTUS BOWL

KUTZTOWN,
Pa. — Kutztown University’s Elfren Quiles (sr. New
Britain, Conn./New Britain) hasn’t played his last
collegiate game yet.
The
6-foot-2 senior wideout will play in the seventh annual Cactus
Bowl in Kingsville, Texas, on Jan. 11. The East-West format
contest — Quiles will play on the East squad — is comprised
entirely of seniors in Division II.
Quiles caught 64 passes for eight touchdowns and a school-record
1,187 yards. His 118.7 yards per game average led the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and was second in
Division II. He was named to the PSAC East and Daktronics
All-Northeast Region first teams.
The
Cactus Bowl assembles football players from more than 150
Division II schools and gives the players a great opportunity to
showcase their skills to NFL scouts. In the first seven years of
the event, when it was Snow Bowl in Fargo, N.D., more than 100
players moved on to sign NFL contracts. In the inaugural Cactus
Bowl in 2001, 25 players signed NFL contracts.
Quiles is one of eight PSAC players who were selected to
participate in the Cactus Bowl.
The
Cactus Bowl raises money for the Shriners Hospitals for
Children.

KU'S
JEPPESEN SELECTED AS THE PSAC CO-FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
KUTZTOWN,
Pa. — Steph Jeppesen (so. Bethlehem/Liberty), after
setting a new school record in the 200-yard breaststroke, was
selected as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s
Co-Female Swimmer of the Week.

Jeppesen, who
shares the PSAC honor with Clarion’s Lori Leitzinger, won six
events at the Franklin and Marshall Invitational, including
three individual events.
Her time of
2:24.76 in the 200 breaststroke set a new KU record and
qualified her for the NCAA B-cut.
She also won
the 100 breaststroke (1:07.72) and the 200 individual medley
(2:13.35).
Jeppesen was a
member of the 200 and 400 medley relay teams, as well as the 800
freestyle relay.
She helped KU
finish first at the Franklin and Marshall Invitational with
686.5 points, beating out Rowan (548) and host Franklin and
Marshall (412).
Jeppesen and
the Golden Bears will be back in action on Jan. 8 in Fort
Lauderdale, Fla.
