KU Women’s Cross Country Honored by USTFCCCA
KUTZTOWN,
Pa. – The Kutztown University Women’s Cross Country team has been
named a Division II All-Academic Team for the 2007 season by the
U. S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
For schools to
qualify, the student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point
average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. The Golden Bears finished the
2006 fall semester with a 3.49 GPA, which was the 29th highest
out of the 99 women’s teams honored.
Kutztown, under
head coach Ray Hoffman, placed fifth at the PSAC Championships
and third at the NCAA East Regionals this past season.
This is the
10th-consecutive year the cross country team has received this
honor.

Kutztown
Women’s Basketball Team eliminated from Post-Season
Contention
Kutztown
University’s women’s basketball team was idle on Wednesday,
but still saw its post-season hopes extinguished when East
Stroudsburg defeated Mansfield, 64-44. The win by ESU gives
the Warriors the fourth and final berth for the PSAC
Playoffs from the Eastern Division. Kutztown (11-15, 4-7
PSAC East) will conclude its season at Keystone Hall on
Saturday against East Stroudsburg.
KU FIELD
HOCKEY TEAM AND PLAYERS RECEIVE NATIONAL ACADEMIC AWARD
KUTZTOWN,
PA – Sixteen members of the Kutztown University field hockey
team were named to the National Academic Squad by the
National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
Kutztown was also honored with a 2007 NFHCA Division II
National Academic team award, posting the second highest
team grade-point average (GPA) of 3.38. Leading the way was
Mansfield University with a 3.42. Bentley College was third
with a 3.35 GPA. Mercyhurst College was fourth (3.29).
Rounding out the top five awards was C.W. Post (3.29).
Golden Bears selected to the academic squad are:
Jennifer Belfatti (jr. Hatfield/Lansdale Catholic), a speech pathology major with a 3.64 GPA, was named to the 2007
Longstreth/NFHCA Division II All-America Second-Team, as
well as first-team All-PSAC in 2007.
Monica Detweiler (fr. Souderton/Christopher Dock)
is an elementary education major who played in nine games,
scoring one goal and registering an assist. She has a 3.40
GPA.
Courtney
Geibel (jr. Mifflintown/Juniata), a biology major
with a 3.53 GPA, started all 22 games for the Golden Bears.
She was a 2006 and 2007 All-PSAC second team honoree and a
2005 PSAC Scholar-Athlete.
Carrie
Healey (so. Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), played in 22 games, starting six, scoring eight goals and
tallying four assists, good for 20 points. Her 20 points
ranks her fifth on the team. She is a special education
major with a 3.40 GPA.
Jacqueline
Healey (fr. Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), played in two games this season. She is a medical
technology major with a 4.00 GPA.
Kelley
Healey (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River North), biology
major with a 3.90 grade-point average, was named to the PSAC
Top 10, Healey holds a 3.90 cumulative grade-point average
as a biology major. She earned first-team National Field
Hockey Coaches Association All-America honors, her
third-career All-America award, this season. She tallied 17
goals and set a single-season school record with 14
assists. Healey was also named to first-team All-PSAC
honors.
A secondary education major, Heather Hoxter (sr.
Glenmore/Octorara)
was named
to the NFHCA Academic Squad in 2005, 2006, and 2007 along
with being a PSAC Scholar Athlete. In her senior season,
Hoxter played in 15 games and scored three goals. She
has a 3.52 GPA.
Alyssa
Matlese (so. Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown), a
secondary education-chemistry major, played in 20 games,
startging 12, and had six goals and nine assists as a
midfielder/back. She has a 3.73 GPA.
Blayke
Narehood (fr. Reedsville/Indian Valley) played in 11 games. Narehood’s major is undeclared. She has a 3.33
GPA.
Elementary education major Abbey Sheeler (fr.
Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) played in 19 games as a
freshman, starting two. She had 12 points on the year (4g.,
2a.). She has a 3.80 GPA.
Whitney
Stum (jr. Landisburg/West Perry), a criminal justice major with a 3.38 GPA, started every game for
the Golden Bears on defense, scoring two goals and tallying
an assist. Stum was also named to the PSAC second-team for
the first time in her career, and was a PSAC Scholar-Athlete
a season ago.
Anne Waapu (so. Hastings, NEW ZEALAND) is a psychology major who had a
breakout season in her second year, starting 18 of 22 games,
and was second on the team with 12 goals. She has a 3.60
GPA.
Melissa
Watson (fr. Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes)
an
electronic media major with a 3.40 GPA, played in three
games in net, making nine saves.
Madison
Weary (so. Palmyra/Palmyra), a political science
major with a 3.67 GPA, played in seven games for the Golden
Bears in her sophomore season.
Laura Wieder (sr. Emmaus/Emmaus), an elementary education major,
played in 14 games and started two of them in 2007. She
has a 3.64 GPA.
Courtney
Zook (fr. Oley/Oley Valley)
an elementary education major, played in 13 games, and
started two.
The Golden Bears finished the 2007 season with a 17-5 record
and 11-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. KU
fell to Bloomsburg University in both the PSAC Championship
quarterfinals as well as in the first round of the NCAA
Tournament.

WASHINGTON EARNS FOURTH PSAC
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK HONOR
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— Kutztown University basketball
player Ryan Washington (r-fr. Glenside/Wissahickon)
was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East
Rookie of the Week for his efforts on the week of Feb 24 to
March 1.
This past
week, KU went 1-1, but Washington played outstanding,
scoring 12 points, and grabbing 28 rebounds in two contests.
In KU’s
defeat at Millersville on Feb. 20, Washington scored only
four points, but set a career high with 18 rebounds in the
loss.
Against
Cheyney on Saturday, Washington had eight points and 10
rebounds, to go along with three assists.
Washington,
who joined the team midseason after transferring to KU from
Indiana (Pa.), is averaging 8.5 points and 7.7 rebounds in
16 contests. This award is Washington’s fourth rookie of the
week honor on the season. Washington last won the award on
Feb. 11.
KU will
next be in action Wednesday as it plays host to Columbia
Union University from Keystone Hall. Tip-off is scheduled
for 7 p.m.

Bingnear Attains First-Team Football Gazette All-America
honors, Quiles Honorable mention
KUTZTOWN, Pa. —
Kutztown University seniors Brian Bingnear (Boothwyn/Chichester)
and Elfren Quiles (New Britain, Conn./New Britain)
were named to the Football Gazette All-America
squads with Bingnear earning first-team accolades and Quiles
receiving honorable mention status.
On the defensive side of the ball, Bingnear was a rock in
the secondary for the Golden Bears the past four seasons.
This season, Bingnear moved from free to strong safety, and
led the PSAC in tackles with 118 (71 solo, 47 ast.) and
averaged 10.3 tackles a contest. The defensive leader also
had four picks, which tied him for second in the conference.
Last year, he was a Third Team
Football Gazette
All-American, and is also a two-time Football Gazette All-Northeast Region honoree as well as two time Daktronics
Northeast All-Region honoree. Bingnear was also a First-Team
All-PSAC East in his final two seasons at KU.
Bingnear ends his illustrious career in maroon and gold with
276 tackles and 8 interceptions.
Quiles led the Golden Bears with 64 receptions for 1,187
yards and eight touchdowns on the year.
Quiles also ranked highly on the national level, as he ended
his senior season averaging 118.7 yards a game, good for
second in Division II. He also averaged 6.4 catches a game,
ranking him 16th in the nation.
His prowess on the field earned him an invitation to the
2008 Cactus Bowl, a Division II All-Star Game which features
the nation’s top players and allows the participants to be
evaluated by pro scouts. In the contest, Quiles grabbed one
reception for 13 yards.
In KU’s first contest of the season against Southern
Connecticut State, Quiles had 12 catches for 211 yards and a
score. However, Quiles went on to outdo that performance
later in the season.
In his performance against PSAC rival Bloomsburg on Oct. 6,
the senior torched the Husky defense for an NCAA Division II
season high of 308 receiving yards.
For his career, Quiles was named first-team All-PSAC East
this season to go along with the all-region honors.
A year ago, he set the Kutztown University single-season
touchdown record for a season with 12, and was named team
MVP.
Quiles ends his two-year career at KU with 118 catches for
2,003 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Under the guidance of second-year head coach Raymond Monica,
the Golden Bears finished the season with a record of 5-6
and went 2-3 against PSAC East competition.
These awards mark the 20th year
Don Hansen’s
Football Gazette, a recognized authority on small
college, football, has selected an NCAA Division II
All-America team. The national publication selected
All-Region teams with the first-team and second-team
All-Region players from each of the four geographic regions
(Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest) comprising the
national ballot, which was voted upon by a select national
panel.
A total of 146 players earned a form of
Football Gazette
All-America honors. Players from 72 of the 150
football-playing schools in Division II earned accolades.

HUGHES WINS PSAC FIELD
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
KUTZTOWN,
Pa. — Michelle Hughes (Sr, Warminster/William Tennent)
of the Kutztown University women’s indoor track and field
team, was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
Field Athlete of the Week after her performance at the
Susquehanna Invitational last weekend.
At
Susquehanna, Hughes placed third in the shot put with a
distance of 37-11.25, and came in second in the weight throw
with a season-best mark of 48-1.75. Her distance in the
weight throw ranks among the top throws in the conference.
Hughes and
the KU indoor track and field team will be back in action on
Feb. 23 at Princeton University.

No. 21 KU picked to finish first in PSAC East in preseason
coaches poll
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference softball
coaches have chosen the Kutztown University softball as the favorite to win the PSAC
East in the 2008 season.
The Golden Bears were picked to finish ahead of No. 12 Bloomsburg, East
Stroudsburg, Shippensburg, Millersville, Mansfield and West
Chester, respectively.
KU looks to repeat as PSAC East Champions as it is coming off of a
22-2 PSAC record. KU was defeated in the PSAC
Tournament by Lock Haven, but the Golden Bears are poised and
reloaded as they look to build on their 2007 PSAC East
campaign.
KU owned the conference's best offense last season. The Golden Bear offense posted a .349 team batting average
while scoring 416 runs in 61 games.
The Golden Bears are led by the PSAC Eastern Division Player of the Year
and All-American Steph Denlinger (jr.
Harleysville/Souderton) and Eastern Division Pitcher of
the Year Katlin Arbogast (so. Ambler/Wissahickon). Denlinger
put together an incredible sophomore season as she hit a
conference-high .507, which was .92 points better than any
other player in the league last season, and scored a
conference-high 70 runs, 24 home runs, and 73 runs batted
in. Junior All-American Ashley Fitzgerald (jr.
Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection) will re-join Denlinger
in the Golden Bears lineup and had 76 hits and 131 total
bases a year ago.
Arbogast
will lead KU's defense as she attempts to match or
better her incredible freshman season in which she compiled
a 27-9 record. She set KU records in wins, strikeouts
(287) and complete games (29) while tossing 249.1 innings to
go along with a 1.87 ERA in 40 appearances. The Golden Bear
defense posted a .957 fielding percentage as they backed Arbogast.
KU started off their 2008 campaign on a strong note this past weekend as
they traveled to Aiken, S.C., and defeated No. 3 Columbus
State University and No. 23 Georgia College & State
University, both by the score of 4-2. KU also defeated USC-Pembroke
and host squad USC-Aiken, while falling to Augusta State
3-2.
Starring at the plate for KU in the tournament were Fitzgerald and Maria Schiavo (so. Old Forge/Old Forge). Fitzgerald was
6-of-14 with a double, a homer and two RBIs, while Schiavo
was 5-of-15 from the dish with a double and three RBIs.
Two hurlers won two games on the tournament for KU, as Monica Glomb (fr.
Mars/Mars) made her first collegiate appearances,
throwing 14 innings, while allowing 13 hits and striking out
seven. Arbogast also started the year off well, picking up
two victories, (one in relief) while hurling 12.1 innings,
allowing only three runs and striking out 21.
The Golden Bears will return to action Feb. 29 when they travel to
Salisbury, N.C., for the Catawba University Tournament.

KU WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
EARNS ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS
KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Six
runners from the Kutztown University women’s cross country
team were named to the 2007 U.S. Track and Field and
Cross-Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team.
The Golden Bears, under head
coach Ray Hoffman, also were named an
All-Academic team by the USTFCCCA.

Joanna Horstmann (jr.
Downingtown/ Downingtown West), Jolene Collins (so.
Palmyra/Palmyra), Hailey Dell (jr. Saranac Lake,
N.Y./Saranac Lake), Kristin Green (sr. Camp Hill/Camp
Hill), Maureen Watson (so. Walnutport/Allentown
Central Cath.) and Stephanie Williams (sr.
Harrisburg/Riverside) were among those honored.
The team finished fifth at the
PSAC Championships and was third at the NCAA Division II
East Regionals.
Williams, the lone KU senior on
the squad who finished second at the East Regionals, has a
GPA of 3.46 and is majoring in marketing. Also finishing in
the top 10 at regionals was Horstmann, who is a leisure and
sports studies major with a 3.42 GPA. Both Golden Bears
competed at nationals, with Horstmann finishing 48th and
Williams coming in 68th.
Watson finished 19th at
regionals and carries a 3.44 GPA in secondary
education/mathematics. Dell finished 34th at East Regionals
and has a 3.81 GPA in secondary education. Collins, who
placed 79th, carries a 3.47 GPA in elementary education.
Green, a political science/criminal justice major, had the
highest GPA on the team with a 3.97, and finished 73rd at
regionals.
The University of Tampa led all
Division II institutions on the list with seven All-Academic
team members. Seattle Pacific and KU each had six members
on the All-Academic team. Bentley, Missouri Southern State,
Nebraska-Kearney, Pittsburg State and Stonehill each had
five student-athletes on the All-Academic team.
To qualify for the individual
All-Academic honors, the student-athlete must have completed
24 semester or 36 quarter hours and have a cumulative grade
point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale. The student-athletes
must also finish in the top 30 percent of individual
participants at their respective regional cross country
championships.
Adams State, which has won the
last five championships in cross country and 13 overall, was
named the All-Academic Team of the Year. A total of 99
Division II women's teams were recognized.
To be eligible for the team
academic honor, institutions must list all student-athletes
whose names appear on the NCAA eligibility form and who have
competed in 50 percent or more of the cross country
competitions on the team’s schedule. Additionally, the team
must compete at the NCAA Division II regional championships
and have a team cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or
higher.

KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— Kutztown University's Dave Ben (jr, Coatesville/Coatesville),
of the men’s basketball team, was named Lehigh Valley
Small College Basketball Media Organization Peter Nevins Player of the
Year for the second-straight season. Melissa McQuade
(fr. Pittsburgh/Shaler), of the women's basketball team,
was named to the LVSCBMO
Team of the Year.
Also, both players were recognized by the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference for their efforts during the week
of Feb. 3 to Feb. 9, with Ben being named PSAC East Co-Player
of the Week and McQuade taking home the PSAC East Rookie of the
Week award.
Ben, who was named PSAC East Player of the Week for the first time
this season, helped guide the Golden Bears to a 2-0 record
this past week, as he averaged 24.0 points and 5.0 boards per
contest.
With KU coming out cold in the first half against East
Stroudsburg, Ben came to the rescue in the second half,
scoring 24 points in the second frame, giving him a
career-high 32 points in the game. Against West Chester, Ben
propelled another second-half comeback, as he scored 16
points and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:05 left to
seal the victory. On the week, Ben hit 18-of-34 field goals.
Ben shares the PSAC East Player of the Week award with
Millersville’s Charlie Parker.
Ben is now averaging 16.5 points a game, eighth
in the conference.
Ben wins the LVSCBMO Player of the Year award for the second
straight season. The award is given to the top player in
the Lehigh Valley area. Voting is conducted by the
organization's members,
including media from the Lehigh Valley, as well as
coaches and sports information directors from Cedar Crest,
Delaware Valley, DeSales, East Stroudsburg, KU,
Moravian and Muhlenberg.
The player of the year award is named in memory of longtime
East Stroudsburg sports information director Pete Nevins,
who was one of the founding members of the organization.
Nevins passed away last year.
For the women, McQuade continued her stellar freshman
campaign in maroon and gold as she was named the PSAC East
Rookie of the Week for the fourth time.
On the week, McQuade turned in two double-doubles. Against East Stroudsburg
on Feb.6, the freshman scored a career-high 20 points and
ripped down 11 boards. On Feb.9 against West Chester, the rookie followed up that
performance with 12 points and 10 rebounds. In the
two games, McQuade was also 6-of-13 from the 3-point arc.
McQuade is second on the team averaging 10.0
points a game and leads the team in rebounds with 8.1 a contest.
Both KU squads return to action Wednesday at Mansfield
University with the women tipping off at 5:30 p.m. and the
men to follow at 7:30 p.m.

Sassaman named to ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District Team
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
—
Greg Sassaman (sr., Blairstown, N.J./North Warren
Regional H.S.) has been named to the ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-District team for his efforts in
the classroom for the 2007 season.
Sassaman, a
physics major, had a cumulative GPA of 3.76, and was also
one of seven men’s soccer players to be named to KU’s Dean's
list.
On the
field, Sassaman was KU’s main offensive weapon, as he
tallied eight goals and four assists, for a
team-leading 20 points. His eight goals tied him for seventh
in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and his 20
points tied him for eight in the conference.
Sassaman
was the only PSAC player to be named to the first-team
squad.
The
District II College Division consists of all NCAA Division
II, NCAA Division III and NAIA colleges and universities in
Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey,
Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To be eligible, a
student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2
cumulative grade-point average and a starter or significant
reserve on his or her team.

KU INDOOR
TRACK AND FIELD RANKED NATIONALLY by ustfccca
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— The
Kutztown University men’s and women’s indoor track and field
teams received national rankings in the latest USTFCCCA
Division II Coaches Power Rankings released Monday by the
U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The men’s team is ranked fourth
with 227.52 points, behind third-ranked Shippensburg
(239.22). Adams State (256.02) is first and Ashland
University (252.94) is ranked second. Northern State
completes the top five.
On the women’s side, KU is
ranked sixth with 206.78 points. Ashland University is
ranked first (242.48), while Missouri Southern State
(227.98), Adams State (219.17), Lewis University (209.35)
and Winona State(208.77) complete the top five.
KU will compete Saturday at the
Susquehanna Invitational.
KU Baseball,
Softball Ready for First Pitches This Weekend Golden Bear Baseball picked to finish second in PSAC East
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— The defending
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division
championship Kutztown University baseball and softball teams
will begin their seasons this weekend. They will be the
first league teams to compete in 2008.
The Golden Bear baseball team is
coming off an incredible 2007 season, in which KU was 49-7
overall and 19-1 in the PSAC East. Kutztown was projected
to finish second in the PSAC East, in voting conducted by
the division's coaches. West Chester is the pre-season
favorite. Mansfield was picked third, followed by
Bloomsburg, East Stroudsburg and Millersville.
The defending North Atlantic
Regional champion Golden Bears will get their season
underway with a doubleheader at Barton College in Wilson
N.C. on Saturday, with another twinbill to follow on Sunday.
Kutztown's softball team also
had a magical season in 2007, finishing with an overall mark
of 43-18, including a 22-2 record in the PSAC East. The
pre-season PSAC East softball poll is slated to be released
next week.
The KU softball team will travel
to Aiken S.C. for six games, three on Saturday and three on
Sunday. The Golden Bears face UNC-Pembroke, Augusta State
and Columbus State on Saturday, and Georgia College & State,
USC-Aiken and Alderson-Broaddus on Sunday.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK AWARD
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— Kutztown University basketball player Ryan

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Rookie of the Week
for his efforts on the week of Jan. 28 to Feb 2.
This past week,
KU went 0-2, but Washington continued his stellar play, scoring
30 points, grabbing 18 rebounds and dishing out nine assists. In their non-conference contest on Jan. 30 against
University of the District of Columbia, Washington had the best
game of his young career with season highs in points with 19
and rebounds with 13. The redshirt freshman also dished out four
assists and blocked a shot.
Against Cheyney
on Feb. 2, Washington had 11 points and five rebounds, to go
along with five assists and a block.
Washington, who

DEAN’S LIST INCLUDES 83 STUDENT-ATHLETES
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— Kutztown University recently announced its dean’s list for the
Fall 2007 semester. Among those recognized were 83 Golden Bear
student-athletes.
Students must have a grade-point average (GPA) of at least
3.60 with the completion of at least 12 credit hours for the
semester to qualify for the dean’s list.
The 83 student-athletes broke the school-record for a semester.
The previous mark was 81, set in three different semesters, fall
2004, spring 2005 and spring 2007.
KU’s dean’s list student-athletes represent 21 sports. They
