CORRADO, DEETER NAMED CAPTAINS FOR 2008 WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University head women’s soccer coach Erik Burstein announced his team captains for the 2008 season Friday.

CORRADO

DEETER

Center-back Chelsea Deeter (r-fr. Langhorne/Neshaminy) will join midfielder Angela Corrado (so. Kutztown/Kutztown) as the team’s captains for the 2008 season.

Corrado, who has 11 career goals, five game-winners, was a team captain last season. She started in 12 games in 2007, scoring six goals for the Golden Bears.

Deeter is coming off a solid year for the Golden Bears. Starting in 18 games as a redshirt freshman, she anchored a defensive unit that recorded six shutouts. She was selected to the All-PSAC First Team.

“The decision to name Chelsea as captain was an easy one for the coaching staff,” Burstein said. “Her dedication to the program combined with her mental toughness and desire to bring our program to the next level is inspiring. I have also been very impressed with her ability to consistently get the job done. Whether we ask her to be more competitive in training, win a ball in the air, or just push a bit harder with her workouts; she just gets it done … day in and day out, she just gets it done.”

The Golden Bears will welcome a young team to camp this August, and Angela and Chelsea will be called upon to help build the future.

KU finished the 2007 campaign with a 10-6-3 record, the sixth straight 10-plus-win season for the Golden Bears.

FORMER GOLDEN BEAR NAMED 18th BEST PROSPECT IN TWINS ORGANIZATION

KUTZTOWN, Pa. Former Kutztown University standout pitcher Mike McCardell (West Chester/Henderson HS) was named the No. 18 prospect in the Minnesota Twins organization by Baseball America

McCardell, a first baseman/right-handed pitcher for KU from 2004-07, made his professional debut last summer in the Twins organization.  After being drafted in the sixth round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft, McCardell reported to the Gulf Coast League Twins. There he was 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA and had 25 strikeouts in 18 innings.

He was quickly promoted to the high-rookie ball Elizabethton Twins, where he had a 5-1 record and 2.00 ERA in eight starts. In 45 innings, McCardell fanned 70 batters, with opponents hitting .179 against him. Between the two levels, he compiled an impressive 102-9 strikeout to walk ratio, which includes a playoff game at Elizabethton.

According to Baseball America, McCardell is not only the No. 18 prospect for the Twins, he also has the best curveball, which was also ruled the best secondary pitch in the entire Twins minor league organization.

“He’s athletic and has a pitcher’s frame, with excellent control of his fastball. His best pitch is an outstanding curveball, one he can throw for strikes or bury as a chase pitch,” scout John Wilson, who signed McCardell, told Baseball America. “His fastball/curveball combo profiles him as at least a setup man right now. He's expected to get on the fast track and jump to high class A.”

At Kutztown, McCardell was 7-3 with five saves and a 2.00 earned-run average in 21 appearances as a senior last year.  He struck out 86 and walked just 11 in 67.1 innings.  For his career, he finished with a 2.82 ERA, second lowest in school history.  He holds the school record for saves (21), is third in strikeouts (278), fourth in innings pitched (236.1) and fifth in wins (20).

McCardell was a two-time all-region pick, by both Daktronics and the ABCA, and two-time first-team All-PSAC East selection as a pitcher and infielder.  He was named the ABCA North Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year and the ABCA/Rawlings Golden Glove pitcher for the region in 2007 and was the 2006 PSAC East Pitcher of the Year.

KUTZTOWN’S JAMES DART NAMED PSAC FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

KUTZTOWN, Pa. Kutztown University’s James Dart (sr. Havertown/Haverford HS), of the men’s track & field team, has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, in voting by the league’s head coaches.

Dart placed seventh at the 2008 NCAA II National Championships with his mark of 54-08.75 in the shot put to earn his first All-America citation.  At the PSAC Championships, Dart placed second in the shot put behind teammate Steve Tyson with his throw of 54-0 1/2, while adding a fifth-place finish in the weight throw with a distance of 54-3 3/4.

Earlier in the season at the Susquehanna Open, Dart had a school record breaking a shot put of 55-1.

Prior to his breakthrough 2008 indoor season, Dart had placed at a PSAC Championship just once in his career, with a third-place showing in the discus at the 2005 outdoor championship meet.  Dart sat out the 2006 and 2007 seasons before returning to the squad this year.

The outdoor track & field season will continue on Saturday at the Monmouth Invitational.

KU'S DAN HINKEL HONORED BY NATIONAL, STATE WRESTLING ASSOCIATIONS

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Former Kutztown University wrestling head coach and current assistant coach Dan Hinkel has been recognized for a lifetime of service to the sport of wrestling.

Hinkel will be awarded an honorary lifetime membership in the National Wrestling Coaches Association in conjunction with this week’s NCAA Division I Championships in St. Louis, Mo.  In May, Hinkel will receive a Lifetime Service to Wrestling Award by the Pa. Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

He is one of four to receive the NWCA’s lifetime memberships at Wednesday’s ceremony in St. Louis.  On May 18, Hinkel will be one of eight to receive the wrestling hall of fame’s service award at the Bent Creek Country Club in Lititz.  That award is given to individuals who have given “countless hours of their time instilling in young people the skills needed to succeed in all areas of life.”

Hinkel has been involved with the Kutztown University wrestling program since the 1960s.  He served as KU’s head coach for two stints — 1965-1972 and 1989-1996 — had a career record of 124-83-6. He was 45-43-4 in his first stint and found great success in his second round of coaching, going 79-40-2 with top five finishes at the NCAA Division II Regionals in five consecutive seasons, from 1992 to 1996.

In his final year as head coach in 1996, he led the Golden Bears to their best finish at regionals in the program’s history. KU went 11-2 during the season and finished second at regionals.

In between and since his head coaching stints, Hinkel has served as assistant coach for five other head coaches, including current head coach Robert Fisher.

In 2003, Hinkel was inducted into KU’s Hall of Fame. He also is a member of Lock Haven University and the PSAC Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Fitzgerald, arbogast garner psac east honors

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Kutztown University softball players Katlin Arbogast (so. Ambler/Wissahickon) and Ashley Fitzgerald (jr. Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection) were rewarded for their quick start this season by being named PSAC East Pitcher and Player of the Week.

Fitzgerald is hitting .426 and has 26 hits in 61 at-bats this year. She has launched six home runs and 18 RBIs, while slugging .852. In KU's 10-1 defeat of Pikeville College on March 13, she went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs and three runs scored.

WASHINGTON WINS ROOKIE OF THE YEAR; ONE OF FOUR HONORED BY PSAC

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University men’s basketball team produced its third straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Rookie of the Year and three other Golden Bears were honored as the conference announced its postseason awards Tuesday.

Ryan Washington (r-fr. Glendale/Wissahickon), a transfer from Indiana (Pa.), earned the school’s third consecutive rookie of the year award with his 9.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.

KU’s Stephen Dennis (so. West Chester/Henderson) was the 2006-07 rookie of the year and Dave Ben (jr. Coatesville/Coatesville) won the honor for the 2005-06 season. Both Dennis and Ben were named to this year's All-PSAC East first team, while Andre Woodlin (jr. Philadelphia/Central) was selected to be on the second team.

Washington, who won five PSAC East Rookie of the Week awards, was a force in the paint, blocking 38 shots — second to Dennis for the team lead. His average of 7.7 rebounds a game was a team high.

He was second on the team in shooting percentage, making 69-of-134 (51.5 percent) of his attempts from the field. Averaging 26.4 minutes per game, Washington had 61 assists and 29 steals for the Golden Bears.

His season highlight in scoring came in an overtime loss at the University of District Columbia on Jan.30, when he scored 19 points. He also had 13 rebounds in the game, for one of his three double-doubles. His best game along the boards came against Millersville on Feb. 20, when he pulled down 18 rebounds in an 80-67 loss.

Dennis finished as the team’s leading scorer with 17.3 points per game, while Ben was second with 17.0 and Woodlin third with 13.7.

Dennis, a member of the division’s second team last season, led the Golden Bears with 61 steals and 41 blocks. He also had 76 assists and a team-high 149 rebounds (5.7 per game).

Ben, who also was a first team member last season, led the team in assists (88), 3-pointers (40) and free throws (119), while averaging 5.3 rebounds per game. He climbed the school’s all-time scoring list this season, moving into seventh place with his 1,342 points. Ben is one point away from tying Bilal Salaam (2001-05) for sixth place and 341 away from breaking Lock Jennings’ record of 1,682 career points (1989-93).

The 6-foot-4 junior forward was the 18th player in school history to reach 1,000 points when he posted 16 in a 90-71 win at Chesnut Hill on Dec. 29. He also is in fifth place on the school’s all-time rebounding list with 483 rebounds and is 48 away from tying Ben Arnold (2002-06) for fourth place.

Woodlin started in all 28 games for the Golden Bears and had 56 assists, 28 steals and a 5.3 rebound-per-game average. He played strong in KU’s final 10 games, averaging 16.8 points a contest.

The quartet of Golden Bears helped KU capture its second PSAC East regular season title with a 10-2 record, matching the 1988 team’s title campaign. KU shared the PSAC East title this season with Cheyney.

The Golden Bears finished with a 19-9 overall record, the second most wins in school history.

VAN WAGNER NAMED TO FIRST TEAM, WEIDENSAUL TO SECOND

KUTZTOWN, Pa.Mercedes Van Wagner (sr. Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) added one more note to her resume by being selected to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division first team Tuesday.

Rachel Weidensaul (sr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) also was honored by the conference, earning a spot on the Eastern Division’s second team.

Van Wagner, a preseason first-team selection, was third on the team in scoring with 8.9 points per game. She was second on the team in rebounding with 7.4 per game.

The senior center, who finished her career at KU as the school’s leading rebounder and shot blocker, was the team’s top shooter, making 93-of-186 (50.0 percent) of her attempts from the field.

Weidensaul, a 6-foot guard, tied for the team lead in scoring with 9.9 points per game. She shot 37.0 percent from beyond the arc, finishing third on the team with 27 3-pointers.

KU finished the season 11-16 overall and 4-8 in the PSAC East.

THREE MEN HEADING TO NATIONALS FOR KU INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University men’s indoor track and field team will be represented at the NCAA Division II Championships by three of its athletes on March 14-15 hosted by the University of Minnesota State-Mankato.

Throwers Steve Tyson (sr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion), Jim Dart (sr. Havertown/Haverford) and high jumper Cody Hartzler (jr. Belleville/Indian Valley) will all be headed to nationals after solid performances at the PSAC Championships.

Hartzler and Tyson enter nationals as PSAC Champions in their respective events, and Dart qualified earlier in the season.

Hartzler posted a meet-high jump of 6-10 ¼ at the championships, which broke KU’s school record of 6-9 that was previously held by Shaun Landis. Hartzler’s season-high leap prior to PSAC’s was 6-6. The junior will enter nationals as the eighth-seeded high jumper.

Tyson beat out his teammate, Dart, to capture his third-straight PSAC title in the shot put with a throw of 54-10 ¾. Tyson will enter nationals as the 10th-seeded thrower.

Dart placed second with a throw of 54-0 to hit a NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Earlier in the season at the Susquehanna Open, Dart had a school record breaking a throw of 55-1. Dart will enter nationals as the 11th seed.

Hartzler will be jumping at 2:50 p.m. March 14, while Tyson and Dart will be in action at 9 a.m. March 15. (All times are Eastern Standard Time.) The NCAA will also stream live action from the championships, and can be accessed on the Division II/CSTV Web site: www.cstv.com.

KU softball ranked No. 10 by NFCA

KUTZTOWN, Pa. The Kutztown University softball team is ranked No. 10 in Division II according to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

KU (7-3, 0-0 PSAC East) moves up 11 spots since the preseason poll, when KU was ranked No. 21.

KU’s three losses this season have come to non-ranked opponents, but the Golden Bears have also knocked off a few national powers. KU defeated No. 3 Georgia College & State University and No. 13 UNC-Pembroke, as well as then-ranked No. 3 Columbus State University, which dropped out of the top 25.

Leading the offensive charge for the Golden Bears this season has been Ashley Fitzgerald (jr. Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection) and Steph Denlinger (jr. Harleysville/Souderton), both of whom were All-America selections a season ago. Fitzgerald is hitting .400 with two home runs and five RBIs, while Denlinger is hitting .355 with a home run and five RBIs.

On the mound, Katlin Arbogast (so. Ambler/Wissahickon) has a 5-1 record with 1.44 ERA. In 34 innings, she has fanned 57 batters and opponents are batting .181 off the sophomore hurler.

The Golden Bears will begin their annual spring break on March 7 when they travel to Florence, S.C., for the Francis Marion Patriot Invitational. Then, they will take on Armstrong Atlantic State, before heading to the SCAD Spring Break Smash Hit Tournament in Savannah, Ga., on March 11.

GOLDEN BEAR MEN’S BASKETBALL TO HOST MILLERSVILLE IN PSAC QUARTERFINAL

KUTZTOWN, Pa. The Kutztown University men’s basketball team (19-8, 10-2 PSAC East, No. 2 seed in East) will host Millersville (19-8, 8-4 PSAC East, No. 3 seed in East) in the quarterfinal round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship tournament on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The game will be at Kutztown’s Keystone Hall.  Tickets will be $7 for adults and $2 for children.  Students from PSAC institutions, with a valid ID, will be admitted free.  By PSAC policy, no complimentary passes will be accepted.

It will be "Gold Out" night, with all fans asked to wear gold in support of the Golden Bears. Gold T-Shirts will be given to the first 250 KU students in attendance. In addition, rally towels will be given to the first 250 KU fans.

The game will be broadcast live on the Kutztown University student radio station, KUR.  KUR can be accessed in Kutztown at 88.3 FM, 1670 AM, and on KUTV (Channel 24-Service Electric, Channel 41-Hometown Utilicom).  The game will also be available via Webcast at kubears.com.

Kutztown and Cheyney ended the year in a two-way tie for first place in the PSAC East with 10-2 records.  The teams split the season series with each other, so Cheyney earned the No. 1 seed by virtue of its season series sweep of third-place Millersville.

Kutztown’s PSAC East co-championship is the team’s first division title since 1988, when the team also went 10-2.  That year, the Golden Bears advanced to the PSAC Championship game.

Kutztown is making its school-record sixth straight trip to the PSAC playoffs.  It is the longest active streak among PSAC East teams and second longest in the league.  Edinboro has appeared in the PSAC playoffs each of the last eight years.  KU also has claimed its sixth-consecutive winning season, a first for the program since the 1910s.

What's at Stake:  A trip to the PSAC semifinals is one the line for the winner.  In Tuesday's other quarterfinals, Cheyney (No. 1 East) hosts East Stroudsburg (No. 4 East) at 7 p.m., Edinboro (No. 1 West) hosts Indiana {Pa.} (No. 4 West) at 7 p.m., and California {Pa.} (No. 2 West) hosts Clarion (No. 3 West) at 8 p.m.  This year’s PSAC Final Four will be held Friday-Saturday, March 7-8, at the highest remaining Eastern seed.

KU vs. Millersville 2006-07: The teams split the season series, with each team winning on its home court.  The Golden Bears won 78-60 at Keystone Hall on Jan. 23.

The Golden Bears limited the Marauders to 34 percent shooting (23-for-68), including a dismal 1-for-18 from 3-point range.  Andre Woodlin scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.  Jeremy Coombs had 13 points, while Stephen Dennis notched 13.  For Millersville, Reggie Bates scored 21 points, Charlie Parker added 18 and Bernard Brown chipped in 14.

Millersville returned the favor on Feb. 20, downing Kutztown 80-67 at Pucillo Gymnasium.  Bates scored 29 points to lead the Marauders.  Parker added 14 and Brown scored 13.  RayQuan Miles had 11 points and 13 rebounds.  Dave Ben scored 29 points for KU, while Nate Edwards had 13.  Ryan Washington grabbed 18 rebounds.  KU led by one at halftime and trailed by just four with 5:$8 left, but Bates hit two key baskets during 6-2 run that sealed the win.  The Bears were plagued by 26 turnovers in their first loss to Millersville since 2005.

KU vs. Millersville – History: Since the 2000-01 season, when Driscoll took over at KU, the Golden Bears are 7-9 vs. the Marauders.  Kutztown had won six straight over Millersville, prior to MU’s win on Feb. 20.  KU has won the last three meetings between the teams at Keystone Hall.  Millersville’s last win at KU came on Feb. 2, 2005 (81-73), which was also the last win for MU before KU’s six-game winning streak in the series.

The teams have met just once before in the PSAC Playoffs, back in the 1983-84 season.  Millersville won that first-round contest, 60-53.

Scouting the Golden Bears

Probable Starters: G-Stephen Dennis (so., 6-5, 17.1 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.9 apg, 2.4 spg), G-Dave Ben (jr., 6-4, 17.0 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 3.4 apg), G-Andre Woodlin (jr., 6-3, 13.5 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 2.1 apg), F-Ryan Washington (r-fr., 6-7, 8.9 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 3.2 apg), F-Jeremy Coombs (so., 6-7, 6.1 ppg, 4.3 rpg)

Kutztown is in the midst of one of the most successful eras in school history under eighth-year head coach Bernie Driscoll.  He has a record of 114-104 (.523), including a 103-65 (.613) mark since the start of the 2002-03 season.

This year’s team has won 19 games, second most in school history (21, 1987-88), and had 10 PSAC East wins, tied for most ever in school history (1987-88 and 1961-62).   The Golden Bears started the year 1-3, before rattling off 11 wins in 13 games.  KU had a six-game winning streak, including a 4-0 start in PSAC East play.  The streaks were halted in consecutive games, with a non-conference setback at the Univ. of District of Columbia followed by the loss to Cheyney in front of a season-high 1700 fans at Keystone Hall.  KU bounced back, finishing the year by winning seven of eight, including one of the program’s biggest victories in years, a 79-71 win at Cheyney on Feb. 23.

KU features the top 1-2-3 scoring punch in the PSAC.  Stephen Dennis (so. West Chester/Henderson) and Dave Ben (jr. Coatesville/Coatesville) rank fifth and sixth in the league in scoring, while Andre Woodlin (jr. Philadelphia/Central) ranks 13th.  No other team in the league has three players ranked in the top 20.

Dennis has had a remarkable sophomore season.  He is averaging 17.1 points, shooting 45 percent from the floor (153-for-340) and 75 percent from the line (111-for-147).  He also averages 5.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.4 steals per game, while chipping in a team-high 41 blocked shots.  He was slowed by an injury suffered in the first meeting vs. Millersville, which caused him to miss two games.  In the first six games after returning, Dennis averaged just 11.2 points.  In the three games since, he’s averaging 18.7.

Ben is having just as remarkable a junior campaign.  He is averaging an even 17.0 points, shooting 41.1 percent from the floor (138-for-336) with 40 three pointers and 109-for-158 from the line (69 percent).  Ben adds 5.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.  He has steadily climbed KU’s career scoring list, now ranking seventh with 1,326 points.

Woodlin has made a strong comeback after suffering a season-ending leg injury 11 games into the 2006-07 season.  Called the “heart and soul” of the team by the coaching staff, Woodlin averages 13.5 points, shooting 46 percent from the floor (132-for-287). He adds 5.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.   He is the only player to start all 27 games this season.  Last year, Woodlin suffered a leg injury against Clarion, a game in which KU won to start the year 11-2.  Without Woodlin, Kutztown was 6-9 the rest of the season.

Sixth man Nate Edwards (so. Philadelphia/North Catholic) rounds out KU’s double-digit scoring leaders.  He chips in 10.8 points per game, including 37 three pointers.  He also adds 2.4 assists and 1.9 steals per game.

Ryan Washington (r-fr. Glenside/Wissahickon) has been a welcome addition to the team since the semester break.  A transfer from Indiana (Pa.), where he redshirted in 2006-07, Washington averages 8.9 points and a team-high 7.4 rebounds per game.  He shoots 51.6 percent from the floor (64-for-124).  His stellar court vision is evident in his 3.2 assists per game.
