KU FIELD
HOCKEY #1 IN SOUTH REGION
KUTZTOWN, PA –
The Kutztown University field hockey team has received its
second #1 ranking of the week. The Golden Bears are ranked #1
in the South Region in the initial NCAA Division II Field Hockey
Committee rankings.
Kutztown was named the #1 team in Division II by the STX/National
Field Hockey Coaches Association poll earlier this week. Both
polls reflect records through Sept. 24. Since then, KU has
suffered its first loss of the season, 6-1 at Bloomsburg. The
Golden Bears are now 10-1 overall, 5-1 in the Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference.
KU
is #1 in the south region, followed by Indiana (PA), Bloomsburg,
Shippensburg and Bellarmine. Stonehill earned the top spot in
the North Region, followed by Bryant, C.W. Post, UMass-Lowell
and Bentley.
The
Division II Field Hockey Committee will select six teams, three
from each region, for the NCAA Division II Championship
Tournament. The NCAA tournament begins on Nov. 3 and continues
with the semifinals on Nov. 9 and the finals Nov. 11.
Championship participants will be announced Oct. 29.

FIELD HOCKEY FIRST WOMEN'S TEAM IN KU HISTORY TO BE RANKED
NO. 1
KUTZTOWN,
Pa. — The Kutztown University field hockey team has been
undefeated late in September before under the direction of head
coach Betty Wesner, but the Golden Bears have never been
ranked No. 1 — until now.
KU (10-0, 5-0
PSAC), with two wins last week over top 10 teams, moved from No.
2 to No. 1 this week in the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches
Association Division II National Coaches Poll.
It’s the first
time a women’s team at KU has been ranked No. 1 in the nation.
The KU baseball team became the first KU team to be ranked atop
a nationwide poll last spring.
KU field
hockey, led by Kelley Healey (jr. Toms River, N.J./Toms River
North) who has a team-high 11 goals and eight assists, will
be tested right away in its first day of being at No. 1. The
Golden Bears will travel to No. 2 Bloomsburg tonight for a 6
p.m. contest.
Bloomsburg
(8-1, 5-1 PSAC) has a high-powered offense, outscoring its
opposition by an average of five goals a game. The Huskies have
58 goals and have allowed just nine. They are led by Jamie
Vanartsdalen who has 20 goals and nine assists on the season.
KU has been
solid on defense as well, allowing just eight goals in 10 games.
The offense has scored 40, an average 3.89 per game. Keeper Sam
Flowers (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) has collected all 10 wins,
two shutouts and has compiled an 0.82 goals against average.
The Golden
Bears are off to their best start since 1983, when the team
started 11-0.

ATHLETICS ANNOUNCES 2007-08 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
KUTZTOWN, PA –
Kutztown University’s athletics department has announced its
2007-08 endowed scholarship recipients.
A total of 34
student-athletes have received a scholarship or scholarships to
support his or her academic and athletic endeavors.
Descriptions of each of the honorees and the awards are as
follows:
Kathy Gregg (sr. Narvon/Garden Spot), of
the softball team, has been awarded a Director of Equal
Opportunity in Sports Scholarship. Gregg batted .337 with 29
hits, two doubles and seven RBI last season. The Director of Equal
Opportunity In Sports Scholarships were established in 1997 to
recognize the contributions of KU student-athletes who have
demonstrated their commitment to community service, academic
excellence and an unselfish love of sport.
Doofan
Tor-Agbidye (jr.
Stewartsville,
NJ/Phillipsburg),
of the track and field team, has been awarded a Director of
Equal Opportunity in Sports Scholarship. Tor-Agbidye is an
All-PSAC athlete in the 400-meter run. The Director of Equal
Opportunity In Sports Scholarships were established in 1997 to
recognize the contributions of KU student-athletes who have
demonstrated their commitment to community service, academic
excellence and an unselfish love of sport.
Vivian Melvin (so. Chichester/Chichester),
of the women’s basketball team, has been awarded a Director
of Equal Opportunity in Sports Scholarship. Melvin averaged
7.6 points per game and had 54 assists in her freshman campaign.

Steph Denlinger (jr. Harleysville/Souderton),

named the 2006 PSAC East Rookie of the Year and the 2007 PSAC

Stephanie
Williams (jr. Harrisburg/Riverside {Ellwood City}),
of the women’s track and field, is a recipient of a George
Kruse Memorial Scholarship. Williams is an All-PSAC runner
in the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs. The George Kruse Memorial
Scholarships were established in 1993 by his wife and brother to
honor George after his tragic death while driving home from his
wife’s Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. George, a 1977 graduate
of KU, was the national leader in assists in lacrosse as a
sophomore, junior and senior, which was indicative of his

David Ben
(so.
Coatesville/Coatesville),
of the men’s basketball team, is a recipient of a George
Kruse Memorial Scholarship. Ben was named the PSAC East

Ashley Singer (sr. Lititz/Warwick), of
the women’s swimming team, is a recipient of a George Kruse
Memorial Scholarship. Singer was an All-PSAC swimmer in the
200 and 500 freestyle. The George Kruse Memorial Scholarships
were established in 1993 by his wife and brother to honor George

Mike Moran (fr. Lafayette, N.Y./Fabios-Pompey),
of the baseball team, is the recipient of the McFarland Award.
The McFarland Award is given to incoming freshmen at KU. The
awards are named in honor of former KU president Dr. David
McFarland.
Meredith Starr (fr. Richmond,
VA/Monacan), of
the women’s basketball team, is the recipient of the
McFarland Award. Starr averaged 10.1 points and 5.1 assists
per game as a senior in high school. The McFarland Award is
given to incoming freshmen at KU. The awards are named in honor
of former KU president Dr. David McFarland.
Stephen
Dennis (so. West Chester/Henderson),
of the men’s basketball team, has been awarded the John W.
Polischak Family Scholarship. Dennis was the PSAC Rookie of
the Year last season, averaging 15.4 points per game. The John
W. Polischak Family Scholarship was established in 2001 in the
memory of the 1939 graduate, three sport varsity athlete and
Hall of Famer John Polischak. Dennis also was awarded the Roger
Cocivera scholarship. The Roger Cocivera Scholarship was
established in 2001 by Hall of Fame basketball player Roger
Cocivera from the KU class of 1956. The scholarship supports a
men’s basketball player who has shown a commitment to academics.
Kim
Kelty (sr.
Levittown/Neshaminy),
of the women’s soccer team, is a recipient of the Denis Roth
Memorial Scholarship. Kelty was named to the All-PSAC East
first team last season. The Dennis Roth Memorial Scholarship was
established in 1992 to honor an outstanding student-athlete who
has demonstrated continuing improvement, both academically and
athletically. Mr. Roth was the KU Dean of Students, helped coach
several sports and was actively involved in every aspect of
student life. He was inducted into the KU Hall of Fame in 2006.
Philip Rummel (sr.
Exeter/West-Mont
Christian Academy),
of the baseball team, is a recipient of the Dennis Roth
Memorial Scholarship. Rummel went 6-3 as a pitcher with a
1.86 ERA last season. The Dennis Roth Memorial Scholarship was
established in 1992 to honor an outstanding student-athlete who
has demonstrated continuing improvement, both academically and
athletically. Mr. Roth was the KU Dean of Students, helped coach
several sports and was actively involved in every aspect of
student life. He was inducted into the KU Hall of Fame in 2006.
Kelley Healey (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River
North), of the field hockey team, is the recipient of the
Stern/Mathias Tau Kappa Scholarship. Healey, a second-team
All-PSAC player and a All-American, scored 18 goals last season.
The Tau Kappa Scholarship was established by the members of Tau
Kappa to provide a permanent source of funding for outstanding
female athletes. The scholarship is named in honor of the late
physical education professors and KU Athletic Hall of Famers
Minerva Stern and Ruth Mathias.
Derek Reis (sr. Jim Thorpe/Jim Thorpe),
of the baseball team, is the Walter Risley Memorial
Scholarship recipient. Reis went 3-0 as a relief pitcher,
posting a 0.44 ERA last season. The Walter Risley Memorial
Scholarship was set up by Mr. Risley’s wife, Ethyl, and her
family, to honor the memory of her husband, a former coach and
athletic director at KU who coached the University’s first
Conference Championship baseball team in 1966.
Cory Porrino (sr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain),
of the football team, is this year’s winner of the Rodney
Hancock Memorial Scholarship. Porrino had 23 tackles, seven
pass breakups and one interception last season. The Rodney
Hancock Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 by Rodney’s
family and friends to honor the memory of this remarkable young
man and KU football player who died tragically in the winter of
1997 in a car accident. It is Rodney’s wonderful and redeeming
character that this scholarship was established to perpetuate.
Brent Howard (jr. Gilbertsville/Boyertown),
of the football team, is the Holmes-Burger King Scholarship
recipient. Howard had 25 tackles at the defensive back position
last season. The Holmes-Burger King Scholarship was established
in 1996 in the name of KU’s starting quarterback and scholar
athlete Rob Holmes by the Burger King Corporation to honor
America’s finest scholar athletes.
Kyle Spotts (sr. Tamaqua/Tamaqua), of
the football team, is the recipient of the Lloyd A. Moll/Jim
McGovern Scholarship. Spotts is a two-year starter at
quarterback and ranks among KU leaders in touchdown passes. The
Lloyd A. Moll/Jim McGovern Scholarship was established by the
late Ed Osinski ’42 and his wife Fran. Ed Osinski was a KU Hall
of Famer, all-century athlete and former wrestling and football
standout. The scholarship was named in honor of the late Lloyd A
Moll, wrestling coach and dean of men, and the late Hall of
Famer Jim McGovern, athletics director, football, men’s
basketball and baseball coach.
Ryan Nye (jr. Bernville/Holy Name), of
the football team, has been awarded the Joseph and Carol
Patton Scholarship. Nye was named to the second team in the
PSAC in 2006. The Joseph and Carol Patton Scholarship was
established in 1999 by Carolyn Patton in memory of her husband,
long time KU football coach, and their daughter. The recipient
must be at least a sophomore who has demonstrated the ability to
make a significant impact on the football field and has shown a
commitment to academics.
Tom Cressman (sr. Sellersville/Pennridge),
of the football team, has been awarded the Stephens-Burger
King Scholarship. Cressman was named to the
2006 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District second team.
The Stephens-Burger King Scholarship was established in 1998 in
the name of KU linebacker and scholar-athlete Jason Stephens by
the Burger King Corporation to honor America’s finest scholar
athletes.
Nick Aspromonte (Tobyhanna,
PA/Pocono Mt. West),
of the football team, is the recipient of the Stevens Award.
The Nicholas Stevens Endowed Scholarshiprd is given in memory of
a former librarian and it is awarded to a freshman football
player.
Tristin Ludy (sr. Pottstown/Pottsgrove),
of the field hockey team, has been awarded the Joshua
Wentworth Wesner Scholarship for 2006-07. The Joshua
Wentworth Wesner Scholarship was established in 2001 by Josh's
family and friends in memory of a loving son and teammate who
passed away in 2000 from Hodgkin’s disease while still a student
at KU. The scholarship is to support an upperclassman field
hockey player who has demonstrated loyalty and a strong
commitment to academics and to KU athletics in general. His
mother, Betty, is the head coach of field hockey at Kutztown
University.
Kevin
Hafera (sr.
Brogue/Red Lion),
of the men’s basketball team, is the recipient of the Sam
Smith Scholarship. The Sam Smith Scholarship was set up in
1997 by Mr. Smith to assist a promising young basketball player
continue their college education. The late Mr. Smith was a KU
graduate and a lifelong Kutztown resident and campus neighbor.
He was president of the KU Foundation and was active in alumni
and campus activities.
Greg Sassaman
(so.
Blairstown, NJ/North Warren),
of the men’s soccer team, has been awarded the Coach Lee Hill
and Alumni soccer players from 1970-1985 scholarship.
Sassaman is a PSAC Scholar-Athlete. The Coach Lee Hill and
Alumni soccer players from 1970-1985 scholarship was established
by Lee L. Hill, former KU faculty member and hall of fame head
men’s soccer coach and alumni soccer players from Coach Hill’s
tenure, to provide the men’s soccer program with a permanent
source of scholarship income.
Ian Clark (Troy, NH/Monadnock), of the
men’s track and field team, is the recipient of the Kenneth
Meyer Track and Field/Cross Country Scholarship. Clark is an
All-PSAC athlete in the pentathlon. The Kenneth Meyer Track and
Field/Cross Country Scholarship was established by his wife,
Dorothy, family and friends to honor one of KU's most revered
coaches and professors. Ken was the coach of KU's first
conference championship track and field team in 1983.
Katie Dovey (so. Willow Hill/Fannett Metal),
of the women’s basketball team, has been awarded the Dr. Carl
J. Daeufer Scholarship. The Dr. Carl J. Daeufer Scholarship
was established in 1999 to recognize outstanding scholastic
achievement by an upper-class student from Pennsylvania,
majoring in education and who is a member of the men’s or
women’s basketball team.
Lara Dellegrotti (so. Berwick/Berwick),
of the women’s basketball team, is the recipient of the
KU Women’s Basketball Maroon & Gold Endowed Scholarship.
Dellegrotti averaged 7.7 points per game last season. The
KU Women’s
Basketball Maroon & Gold Endowed Scholarship
is a coach’s choice award established anonymously in 2000.
Mercedes Van
Wagner (sr.
Mullica Hill,
NJ/Clearview Regional),
of the women’s basketball team, is the recipient of the
Jennie Schwoyer/Sam Smith Scholarship.
Van Wagner was a member of the All-PSAC second team in 2006-07.
The
Jennie Schwoyer/Sam Smith Scholarship was set up in 1998 by Mr.
Smith to assist a promising young basketball player continue
their college education. The scholarship bears the name of Sam’s
aunt, a long time coach in Fleetwood. The late Mr. Smith was a
KU graduate and lifelong Kutztown resident and campus neighbor.
He was president of the KU Foundation and was active in alumni
and campus activities.
Cheryl Dingman (jr. Lansdale/North Penn),
of the women’s cross country team, is the recipient of the
Marguerite Marsch Shinsky women’s cross country direct
scholarship. The Marguerite Marsch Shinsky women’s cross
country direct scholarship was established by Michelle (Shinsky)
Mason, ’73, in memory of her mother, Marguerite Marsch Shinsky,
to provide the women’s cross country program with an additional
source of scholarship income.
Kyle Davis (so. Peckville/Valley View),
of the wrestling team, has been awarded the Hinkel Family
Scholarship.
The Hinkel Family Scholarship was established in 2001 by Daniel
and Lois Hinkel to assist a wrestler who has been accepted in
the University's college of education. Dan Hinkel served as a
professor of secondary education at KU, and wrestling coach from
1964-95. He still remains actively involved with the program.
Sonny Flood (so.
Southampton/William Tennent),
of the wrestling team, is the recipient of the Lloyd A.
Moll/Jim McGovern Scholarship. The Lloyd A. Moll/Jim
McGovern Scholarship was established by the late Ed Osinski ’42
and his wife Fran. Ed Osinski was a KU Hall of Famer,
all-century athlete and former wrestling and football standout.
The scholarship was named in honor of the late Lloyd A Moll,
wrestling coach and dean of men, and the late Hall of Famer Jim
McGovern, athletics director, football, men’s basketball and
baseball coach.
Laura Deller (sr. York/Dallastown), of
the women’s track and field team, was awarded the Track and
Field Alumnae Scholarship. Deller is an All-PSAC athlete.The Women’s Track and Field Alumnae Scholarship was established to ensure
continued excellence in KU women’s track and field by alums of
the program. The recipient must be an official member of the
women’s track and field team. She must be in her second or third
year of track and field eligibility when the scholarship is
awarded, for use during her third or fourth year of
participation. She must have a cumulative grade point average of
2.8 or higher.
Brian Bingnear (sr. Boothwyn/Chichester),
of the football team, is the recipient of the Kullman
Scholarship. Bingnear was named to the first team in the
PSAC as a defensive back in 2006. He also is an All-Region and
All-American player.
The Mike Kullman
Endowed Football Scholarship was established 2005 by the Kullman
family in memory of Mike Kullman former KU student athlete and
coach. The recipients must be defensive football players with
principal emphasis given to student-athletes who have
demonstrated the ability to make a significant impact on the
playing field, show loyalty and a strong commitment to the
sport, be in good academic standing, and demonstrate commitment
to KU athletics in general.
Heather Hoxter (sr. Glenmore/Octorara),
of the field hockey team, is the recipient of the McIntyre
Scholarship. Hoxter had five goals and five assists last
season.
The Ramona M. McIntyre Memorial Scholarship was established by
the McIntyre family in memory of the late Ramona M. McIntyre.
The recipient must be an official member of the women’s
basketball, field hockey, softball or volleyball teams, has been
officially accepted in the college of education (secondary
education major), must be in good academic standing, and must
show financial need.
Nicole Biuso (sr. Centereach, N.Y./Ward
Melville), of the women’s volleyball, has been awarded the
Sullivan Scholarship.
Biuso is a 2006 member of the PSAC’s second team and she
currently ranks No. 1 in KU history with 1,618 digs. The Shannon
Sullivan Memorial Scholarship is named in memory of Shannon
Sullivan, who was a four-year letterwinner (2002-05) for the
Golden Bear volleyball team. She finished her career with 976
digs. Sullivan was the only player to be part of all three of
Kutztown's PSAC Eastern Division Championships (2002, 2003,
2005). Sullivan passed as a result of an automobile accident
near her hometown of Pine Grove, Pa., on Aug. 19, 2006.

KU’s SAM FLOWERS NAMED PSAC FIELD HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK
KUTZTOWN, PA – Kutztown University’s Sam Flowers (sr.
Harleysville/Souderton), of the field hockey team, has been
named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Player
of the Week.
Flowers was instrumental in keeping Kutztown atop
the PSAC standings by leading the Golden Bears to a 2-0 week.
After saving six shots in 3-1 win over Millersville, she
delivered a remarkable performance in a narrow win at IUP.
Flowers turned away 13 Crimson Hawk shots as the Golden Bears
were able to post a 1-0 win, running their record to 8-0
overall.
Through eight games, Flowers has allowed just six
goals for a 0.77 goals-against average. She has notched 43
saves.
Kutztown is 8-0 overall, 3-0 in the PSAC. The
Golden Bears return to action on Wednesday at East Stroudsburg.

KU’S PORRINO NAMED PSAC EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
KUTZTOWN, PA – Kutztown University’s Cory Porrino (sr.
Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) has been named the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Defensive
Player of the Week.
Porrino keyed a superb fourth-quarter defensive
effort for Kutztown in a 28-16 win over Shippensburg on
Saturday. The safety was responsible for stopping two
possessions inside the Kutztown 5-yard line in the final quarter
as the Golden Bears preserved the 12-point win. Porrino
intercepted a pass in the end zone, then broke up a fourth-down
pass inside the five on Shippensburg's next possession. He
finished with eight tackles, including one for loss.
In three games, Porrino has 17 tackles, including
four for loss. The interception and pass breakups vs.
Shippensburg were his first of the season.
Kutztown is 2-1 on the year and travels to Slippery
Rock for a 7:00 p.m. contest Saturday night.

The broadcast is part of an 11-game slate of

fall. It will be available to 4.8 million cable, satellite and

KU WOMEN'S
CROSS COUNTRY RANKED NO. 1 IN EAST REGION
KUTZTOWN,
Pa. — The Kutztown University women’s cross country team,
coming off a first-place finish at the Maroon and Gold Fall
Classic Saturday, moved up to No. 1 in the
USTFCCCA Division II East Region rankings.
The KU men, who
finished second at the classic Saturday, are ranked No. 8 in the
East Region.
Stephanie
Williams (sr. Harrisburg/Riverside) took first overall in
the Maroon and Gold Fall Classic with a time of 24:08, and
teammates Joanna Horstmann (jr. Downingtown/
Downingtown West) and Kristin Cupido (fr. Bridgewater,
N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) finished in second and third,
respectively.
The men were
led by John Pyne (jr. Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt), Pat
Bone (sr. Doylestown/Central Bucks West) and Ben Loht
(so. Lewistown/Indian Valley) who finished fifth, sixth and
seventh.
KU will be back
on the course at the Iona Meet of Champions, slated to start at
9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22.

GREGG NAMED CO-CAPTAINS FOR 2008 SOFTBALL
KUTZTOWN,
Pa. — The Kutztown University women’s softball coach Judy
Lawes named her captains for 2008.
The 2006
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year and
2007 PSAC Player of the Year Steph Denlinger (jr.
Harleysville/Souderton) along with outfielder Kathy Gregg
(sr. Narvon/Garden Spot) will be co-captains for the 2008
Golden Bears.
Denlinger
finished the 2007 season with a .507 (73-for-144) batting
average in 54 games. She had 24 home runs, 73 RBIs, 70 runs
scored and 51 walks. She has 40 homers for her career and 110
runs scored. She batted .356 in her freshman campaign.
Gregg batted
.337 (29-for-86) with 25 runs scored and seven RBIs. She has a
career average of .292.
KU, which won
the PSAC East title, was the runner-up in the PSAC and qualified
for the Mid Atlantic Regional tournament. The Golden Bears
finished the season 43-18 overall and 22-2 in the PSAC East.

HOCKEY RANKED NO. 4 IN NATION
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— After knocking off then-No. 2 Shippensburg, the undefeated
Kutztown University field hockey team moved from No. 6 to No. 4
in the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II
poll.
Bloomsburg is
ranked No. 1, followed by No. 2 Stonehill College and No. 3
Indiana (Pa.). Rounding out the top five is the University of
Massachusetts Lowell.
KU (6-0, 1-0)
shocked Shippensburg, which dropped to No. 9 in the poll,
scoring three goals in the final 15 minutes to collect the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference win. Kelley Healey (jr.
Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) scored twice, including
the game-winning goal, to give the Golden Bears the big win.
Healey leads
the team with 21 points, seven goals and seven assists, while
Lyndsay Butler (so. Annandale, N.J./Summit) has seven goals
and five assists.
KU is averaging
6.14 goals per game while allowing 1.02 per game, outscoring
opponents 30-5.
Golden Bears
keeper Sam Flowers (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) is 6-0 in
net with a 1.11 goals against average and 24 saves.
KU’s
second-half play has been a big reason for the team’s success,
as 20 of the Golden Bears’ 30 goals came in the second half.
KU will be back
in action with its second PSAC contest against Millersville at 7
p.m. Tuesday.

KINNEY NAMED PSAC EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
KUTZTOWN,
Pa. — Austin Kinney (jr. Landisville/Hempfield),
with her 202 assists in five matches last week, was named the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Player of the Week.
Kinney, who has
averaged 11.5 assists per game this season, helped the Kutztown
University women’s volleyball team to a 3-2 record last week and
8-2 overall.
Kinney now has
426 assists on the season, moving her into second place all-time
with a career total of 2,713. She’s 471 assists away from the KU
career record of 3,184 assists, set by Yvonne Shimp (1994-97).
She also is
third on the team with 114 digs this season. Kinney and the
Golden Bears will be back in action Tuesday at Cheyney in KU’s
first PSAC East game of the season. The match starts at 7 p.m.

KELLEY
HEALEY NAMED PSAC FIELD HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK
KUTZTOWN, PA –
Kutztown University’s Kelley Healey (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms
River North), of the field hockey team, has been named the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Player of the
Week.
Healy was instrumental in Kutztown's 4-0 week, totaling five
goals and five assists. She played a role each of Kutztown's
scores in a 5-1 win against Catawba, netting a goal and tying a
school record with four assists. In addition, she spearheaded a
3-1 come-from-behind win against No. 2 Shippensburg by scoring
the game-tying and game-winning goals in the game's final
minutes.
Kutztown is now 6-0 on the season. The Golden Bears host
Millersville on Tuesday at 7:00 PM at University Field.

DINNIS NAMED PSAC EAST PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
KUTZTOWN, PA –
Kutztown University’s Tom Cressman (sr. Sellersville/Pennrdige
HS) and Ty Dinnis (so. Doylestown/Central Bucks West)
have been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)
Eastern Division Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week,
respectively.
The
pair earn the award for their efforts in Kutztown’s 35-13 win
over Clarion on Saturday.
Cressman intercepted a tipped pass and returned it 23 yards
for Kutztown’s first touchdown of the game. The linebacker
finished with 10 tackles, including three for loss of 15 yards
and a sack for four yards.
Dinnis tallied 239 all-purpose yards The running back
totaled 58 yards rushing on 13 carries while adding four catches
for 45 yards. Dinnis also returned three kickoffs for 127 yards
and two punt returns for nine yards. His 56-yard kickoff return
in the third quarter set up a touchdown score. Dinnis also had
two catches for first downs on the Golden Bears final scoring
drive.
Kutztown is 1-1 on the season. The Golden Bears return to
action on Saturday with the home opener against Shippensburg.
Kickoff is set for 3:05 PM at University Field.

Wheeler
joins KU field hockey, lacrosse coaching staffs
KUTZTOWN, PA —
Beth Wheeler has been named assistant coach for the women’s
lacrosse and field hockey teams by Kutztown University Athletic
Director Greg Bamberger.
Wheeler, a 2005 graduate of Roanoke College in Salem, Va., will
assist head lacrosse coach Sarah Greer and head field hockey
coach Betty Wesner.
“I’m thrilled at the opportunity to come to Kutztown,” Wheeler
said. “I am looking forward to working with Coach Wesner and
Coach Greer, and helping to maintain the level of excellence in
KU field hockey, while also helping in the challenge of
re-launching our women’s lacrosse program.”
Wheeler comes to KU from Saint James School, a boarding school
in Saint James, Md., where she coached varsity field hockey,
junior varsity lacrosse and junior varsity basketball. She led
the field hockey team to a 12-3-2 season and a league
championship.
Wheeler was a four-year member of Roanoke’s field hockey team
and a two-year member of the lacrosse team. She served as
captain for the field hockey team and was named to the NFHCA
Division III National Academic Squad. She also was named to the
second team in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
“We’re extremely happy to welcome someone of Beth’s experience
and talent to Kutztown University,” Wesner said. “She will be a
fine addition to the KU field hockey coaching staff.”
As
a member of the Roanoke lacrosse team, Wheeler played on the
2002 and 2003 teams which competed in the ODAC Championships.
“Beth will be a key component as we re-establish women’s
lacrosse at Kutztown University,” Greer said. “She has a good
understanding of the game and I’m looking forward to working
with her.”
Wheeler also has instructed field hockey at several sports camps
and spent a season as the lacrosse coach at Patrick Henry High
School in her final semester at Roanoke.
