BEN AND McQUADE EACH NAMED PSAC EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Kutztown University's Dave Ben (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) and Melissa McQuade (so. Pittsburgh/Shaler) each received Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Player of the Week honors.

Ben, honored for the second straight week, is honored for a week in which he netted 67 points in two Golden Bear victories to help keep them tied atop the PSAC East standings.

His 36 point effort against West Chester one Wednesday was a career-high, a week after moving into first in all-time scoring at Kutztown. Ben also had eight 3-pointers, which broke the previous KU single-game record of seven.

McQuade had 17 points and 12 rebounds in a comeback win over West Chester as KU moved into a first-place tie with WCU in the PSAC East.

She added 18 points and 15 boards in a 66-56 win over Bloomsburg on Saturday, to give her nine double-doubles on the season.

The KU men's and women's basketball teams will travel to Cheyney on Wednesday night. Tip-off for the women is set for 6 p.m. and the men will follow at 8 p.m. The men's game will be a matchup of the two first place teams in the PSAC East.

GORSKI NAMED No. 4 PROSPECT IN DIVISION II

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Darin Gorski (jr. Mount Joy/Donegal) will lead the Kutztown University baseball team into the 2009 season as a top-five prospect in Division II.

Darin Gorski

Baseball America ranked Gorski, a 6-foot-4 left-handed pitcher for the Golden Bears, the No. 4 prospect in Division II.  Gorski was also named a “Player to Watch” in Baseball America’s Division II Preview.

Gorski, who last season finished 8-4 in 12 starts with a 2.43 ERA in 81.1 innings, went 5-0 in his final five PSAC East starts. He had a 1.03 ERA in those five wins, striking out 34 and limiting the opposition to 19 hits.

Overall, he had 83 strikeouts and seven complete games en route to being named an All-PSAC East and all-region first teamer.

Gorski and the Golden Bears will open the 2009 season this weekend with two doubleheaders at Barton College. Both doubleheaders, on Saturday and Sunday, will begin at noon.

The doubleheaders will mark the start of KU coach Chris Blum’s seventh season as head coach. The Golden Bears are coming off their sixth PSAC title and third in their last four seasons.
