Golden
Bears produce 121 PSAC scholar-athletes
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced the 2008-09
PSAC
Scholar-Athletes. There are a total of 1,859 student-athletes
recognized by the conference, with 121 from Kutztown University.
To be eligible for the scholar-athlete
awards, student-athletes must attain at least a 3.25 cumulative
grade point average while competing in an intercollegiate varsity
sport. The 1,859 scholar-athletes represent a new league
record, helped by the additions of Gannon and Mercyhurst, as nearly
one-third of all PSAC student-athletes were named scholar-athletes.
Kutztown’s 121 scholar-athletes, the
second-highest total in school history to last year’s 131, represent
22 sports. They are as follows:

Golden Bears finish 38th in Directors' Cup standings
KUTZTOWN, Pa. —
Kutztown University compiled 375 points to finish 38th in the
National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA)
Directors' Cup.
Grand Valley State (Mich.) won their sixth-consecutive Directors'
Cup after compiling 1,014.5 points and Minnesota State-Mankato
finished in a distant second place with 800.25 points.
The Golden Bears spring season was their strongest, collectively
earning 203 points. Leading the spring sports were the softball and
men's tennis teams, which each finished ninth in the nation to earn
64 points apiece.
The softball team reached the Atlantic Super-Regional, which was one
game away from the NCAA Championships. The men's tennis team, who
were conference and regional champions, were knocked out by Lynn
University in the NCAA Championships.
The baseball team earned 50 points for KU, after finishing 25th in
the nation and qualifying for the NCAA Atlantic Regionals.
Rounding out the spring scoring was the women's tennis team which
finished 33rd and earned 25 points. They qualified for the Atlantic
Regional after finishing the season with a
KU, ranked 63rd after the winter sports, was led by the record
breaking men’s basketball team that finished ninth in the nation.
They finished with a school best 28 wins and won two NCAA Division
II tournament games, which has never occurred in school history. The
men’s basketball team finished runner-up to Gannon in both the
conference and regional championship.
The Golden Bears also received strong showings by the wrestling and
women’s swim teams. The wrestling team finished in 19th place to
earn 55 points, while the women’s swim team finished 21st to earn 53
points.
The Directors' Cup is awarded annually by the National Association
of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), by the Learfield
Sports and USA Today to the best overall collegiate
athletics programs in the country at each of the NCAA Division I, II
and III levels, as well as NAIA. The points are awarded based on
each institution’s finish in up to 14 sports — seven women’s and
seven men’s.

Three KU bowlers earn
Academic All-NTCA selection
KUTZTOWN, Pa.

Three members of the Kutztown University women's bowling team were
named to the National Tenpin Coaches Association All-Academic team.
Stephanie Ray (so. West Lawn/Wilson) and
Jacquelyn Heimbach (sr. Easton/Easton) each earned their
second consecutive Academic All-NTCA team, while
Chelsea
Adam (fr. Reading/Exeter) was a first-time honoree.
Ray
was also named to the third team nationally, with Heimbach and Adam
earning honorable mentions.
Student-athletes
were required to achieve a minimum grade point average of 3.40 for
the 2008-09 academic year. First, second and third-team distinction
was accorded based upon the NTCA post-season All-America voting. The
NTCA is the organization of NCAA bowling head coaches.
The Golden Bears won the Northeast
Conference regular season title with an overall record of 96-52 and
15-3 in the conference. It was the first season for the Golden Bears
in the NEC, they finished runner-up in postseason play.

Women's swim team earn
academic award
KUTZTOWN, Pa.

The women's swim team was named to the
Scholar All-America team by the
College Swim Coaches Association of America for their outstanding
spring semester in the classroom.
The women's team received the award of academic excellence in March
for their performance in the fall semester, as well. The scholarly
award is given to a team that maintains an average GPA of 3.0 or
higher.
In the swimming pool, the
Golden Bear women were
11-3 overall and 7-3 in the PSAC. Individually,
Steph
Jeppesen (jr. Bethlehem/Liberty) had a stellar showing at
the NCAA Championships, setting three KU records and finishing
second in the 200-yard breaststroke and ninth in 100 breaststroke.

Healey selected to ESPN the Mag's Academic-America first team
KUTZTOWN, Pa.

Kelley Healey (sr. Toms River/Toms River North), of the
Kutztown University field hockey team, was selected to the ESPN the
Magazine College Division Academic All-America women's at-large
first team on Thursday.
Healey earned Academic All-America
second team selection last season and was an All-District first team
honoree each of the past two years.
Healey, a biology major with a
3.94 GPA,
had nine goals and 12
assists in 2008. Those 30 points moved her into second
all-time on the KU scoring list with 161 points and she
owns the KU career-record for assists with 39.
She is a four-time National Field Hockey Coaches
Association (NFHCA) All-American, four-time All-Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference (PSAC)
selection and was been named to the NFHCA Academic Squad
in each of her four seasons. In the fall, she was
named to the PSAC Academic Top 10.
Healey was one of 15 named to the
first-team. The women's at-large team consists of the
sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics,
ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water
polo. The college division includes athletes from NCAA
Division II, III, NAIA and junior college institutions.
To be eligible for the Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must be at
least a sophomore with a 3.3 cumulative grade-point
average and a starter or significant reserve on his or
her
team.

Gorski drafted by the New York Mets in the seventh round
KUTZTOWN, Pa.

Kutztown University pitcher
Darin Gorski (jr.
Mount Joy/Donegal) was selected by the New York Mets in the
seventh round of the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player
Draft on Wednesday.
Gorski, who was the 224th overall pick, was 8-2 with a 2.17 ERA in
2009. He led the Golden Bears in numerous categories, including
strikeouts (100), innings pitched (78.2) and batting average against
(.208). The left hander had the most strikeouts in the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference and ranked second in ERA. His strikeout
total ranked tied for 10th in all of Division II.
He is
the 11th Golden Bear to be selected in the MLB first-year player
draft since 1997. Three other Golden Bears
are currently playing professional baseball for MLB
affiliated clubs – Mike McCardell (Twins), Ron Chiavacci
(Tigers)
and Philip Rummel (Astros). Ryan Vogelsong (Orix
Buffaloes, Japanese League) and Matt Maradeo (Washington Wild
Things, Frontier Independent League) are other former KU players
still active in professional baseball.
Gorski joins Vogelsong (fifth), Andy Bausher (sixth), McCardell
(sixth) and Glenn Woolard (10th) as Golden Bears drafted in the
first ten rounds.

Gorski, Maini
earn more postseason awards
KUTZTOWN, Pa.

Darin
Gorski (jr. Mount Joy/Donegal) and
Adam Maini (jr.
Macungie/Emmaus) were each selected to the 2009 National
College Baseball Writers Association Division II All-America teams
on Wednesday.
Gorski
was a third team selection while Maini was an honorable mention,
both as starting pitchers. Gorski and Maini were the one-two punch
of the Golden Bears pitching staff, combining for 15 wins and 151
strikeouts.
The
Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association selected Gorski to an
All-America second team on Wednesday. Gorski was a first team
All-Atlantic Regional selection by Rawlings/ABCA.

KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— The Kutztown University softball team
finished the 2009 season ranked ninth by the National Fastpitch
Coaches Association (NFCA).
The Golden Bears were previously
ranked 11th before moving up two spots after finishing as runner-up
to Lock Haven in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Super Regional
KU finished with an overall record
of 46-12-1 and 15-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
Eastern Division.
Lock Haven, who knocked KU out in
the super regional, finished ranked No. 1 by the NFCA after
winning the NCAA Division II National Championship.
