KU FIELD HOCKEY
PREPARES FOR PSAC PLAYOFFS
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— The Kutztown University field hockey enters the Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference playoffs with a semifinal matchup with Indiana
(Pa.) at noon Friday at Bloomsburg University.
The No. 2-ranked Crimson Hawks topped
the Golden Bears the only time the two teams met this season.
The Golden Bears (13-5, 5-3 PSAC
East), ranked No. 5 in Division II, battled IUP hard and kept the
game
scoreless in the first half before dropping the match 2-0.
KU’s offense is led by Kelley
Healey (sr. Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), who has nine
goals and 12 assists, to give her 30 points on the season. Healey
currently ranks second in KU history with 161 points, just one
behind the record.
Abbey
Sheeler (so. Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights)
and Lyndsay Butler (jr. Annandale, N.J./Summit) both have 29
points, and are tied for the team lead in goals scored with 14.
Anne Waapu (so. Hastings, NEW ZEALAND) has nine goals and three
assists for 21 points. Carrie Healey (jr. Toms River, N.J./Toms
River North) has five goals and is second on the team with five
assists.
In the net, Emily Falko (fr.
Catasauqua/Catasauqua) leads the Golden Bears with 56 saves
and a 10-3 record. Falko has a 2.25 goals against average and one
shutout on the season.
The IUP Crimson Hawks
(14-1, 7-1 PSAC West) have
scored 48 goals this season, but it’s the defense that powers them.
The IUP defense has only allowed six goals all year. Goalkeeper Lydia
Dolly has a 0.40 goals against average and 10 shutouts.
The winner of Friday’s semifinal will
play the winner of the Bloomsburg and Shippensburg contest.
Bloomsburg is ranked No. 1 in Division II, while Shippensburg is
ranked No. 3. Their semifinal will be played at 2:30
p.m. Saturday's final is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at
Bloomsburg.
Bloomsburg (19-1, 8-0 PSAC East) is
led by Jamie Vanartsdalen, who leads the nation with 85 points, from
33 goals and 19 assists. Samantha Kropa is the next point leader
with 50, coming from 20 goals and 10 assists.
Shippensburg (16-3, 6-2 PSAC West) is
led by Kim Davies and Amanda Houser. Davies leds the team with 24
points and 7 assists. Houser is solid in the net with a 1.16 goals
against average and eight shutouts.
Notes:
KU dropped their semifinal match with Bloomsburg last year by a
score of 2-1. The Golden Bears last appearance before that was a 6-2
loss to Shippensburg in 2005. This marks the second year all four of
these teams competed in the PSAC Championships.

KU BOWLING RANKED 16TH BY NATIONAL TENPINS COACHES ASSOCIATION
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— The Kutztown University women’s bowling team has been ranked 16th
by the National Tenpins Coaches Association in the first national
poll of the season.
The University of Maryland Eastern
Shore is ranked No. 1 in the poll, followed Vanderbilt University,
University of Nebraska, University of Central Missouri, Arkansas
State University who round out the top five.
Five other Northeast Conference
members were ranked in the top 20, with Sacred Heart earning the
highest ranking at No. 6. Fairleigh Dickinson follows at No. 7 and
Adelphi is ranked 13th.
St. Peter’s College and St. Francis
College (N.Y.) are behind KU at 17 and 19, respectively.
The Golden Bears are 5-0 after the KU
Duals on Oct. 11 and will travel to Elmwood Park, N.J., for their
next competition at the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational on Oct. 31.

HOCKEY RANKED FOURTH IN SOUTH REGION
KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University
field hockey team is ranked fourth in the South Region of the NCAA
Division II poll released Wednesday.
The Golden Bears (13-5) sit behind No. 1
Bloomsburg (16-1), No. 2 Indiana, Pa., (12-1) and No. 3 Shippensburg
(15-3). Massachusetts-Lowell (15-3) leads the North Region, and
Bentley (13-5) and Southern Connecticut State (10-8) round out the
top three.
The field hockey committee will select six
teams, three from both regions, for the national championship
tournament. The selections for the tournament will be made on at 5
p.m. Nov. 3 on a Webcast on NCAA.com. The No. 1 seed in each region
will receive a bye and the second and third seeds will play in the
first round on Nov. 8. The semifinals are on Nov. 14 and the final
is Nov. 16.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTY MOVES UP TO No. 12 IN NATION
KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University
women’s cross country team jumped one spot to No. 12 in the NCAA
Division II national poll by the United States Track and Field and
Cross Country Coaches Association. The Golden Bears also are ranked
second in the Atlantic Region.
Adams
State remained ranked No. 1, while Grand Valley State and Augustana
(S.D.) rounds out the top three.
Shippensburg, which is ranked first in the
Atlantic Division, is ranked sixth overall. Edinboro, ranked 13th,
and Slippery Rock, 15th, also represent the Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference in the nation’s top 25.

WOMEN’S SOCCER RANKED FIFTH IN ATLANTIC REGION
KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University
women’s soccer team is ranked fifth in the Atlantic Region of the
NCAA Division II poll released Wednesday.
The
Golden Bears (11-4-3) sit behind No. 1 West Chester (10-1-3), No. 2
Slippery Rock (11-3-1), No. 3 West Virginia-Wesleyan (12-1) and No.
4 East Stroudsburg (8-4-2).
KU used an 11-game unbeaten streak to earn a
No. 2 ranking in the Atlantic Region, but a loss at East Stroudsburg
dropped the Golden Bears back three places.
After a 3-1 win over Millersville on Tuesday,
the Golden Bears are 12-1-1 in their last 14 games.
The Golden Bears are third in the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference East Division with 17 points at 5-3-2.
West Chester (7-0-2) is in first with 23 points and Bloomsburg
(7-2-0) is in second with 21 points.
KU can clinch one of the four PSAC East playoff
berths with a win at Bloomsburg Saturday or if Shippensburg loses
one of its final two conference games.
The Golden Bears’ game at Bloomsburg is slated
for a 1 p.m. start Saturday.

KU WRESTLING RANKED FOURTH IN EAST REGION, KEMMERER No. 1 AT 133
POUNDS
KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University
wrestling team will kick off its 2008-09 season ranked fourth in the
East Region with six wrestlers in the top five in their respective
weight classes.
Joe Kemmerer (sr. Mountain Top/Crestwood)
and David Zeek (jr. Newtown/Council Rock North) lead the
Golden Bears in the individual rankings, with Kemmerer, who won the
national championship at 133 pounds in 2006-07, ranked No. 1 at 133
pounds, and Zeek is ranked No. 2 at 157 pounds.
Kyle Davis (jr. Peckville/Valley View),
at 184 pounds, and Scott Snyder (jr. Slatington/Northern Lehigh),
197, are ranked fourth, while Bret Martinez (jr.
Slatington/Northern Lehigh), 141, and Chris Chambers (jr.
Holland/Council Rock South), 149, are ranked fifth.
Kevin Bolinsky (so. Ashland/North
Schuylkill) is ranked sixth at 285 pounds.
KU sits behind No. 1 Newberry, No. 2 Mercyhurst
and No. 3 Pitt-Johnstown in the region.
The Golden Bears will open the season on Nov.
15 at the East Stroudsburg Open.

WOMEN’S BOWLING RANKED FOURTH IN NEC PRESEASON POLL
KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University
women’s bowling is ranked No. 4 in the Northeast Conference’s
2008-09 preseason poll released Wednesday.
KU,
which opened the season with a 5-0 record at the Kutztown Duals on
Oct. 11, is fourth behind No. 1 Sacred Heart, No. 2 Fairleigh
Dickinson and No. 3 Adelphi. St. Peter’s, St. Francis (N.Y.) and
Long Island round out the seven teams in the conference.
KU, after competing as an independent in
2007-08 in its inaugural season, joined the newly formed NEC this
season. The Golden Bears will travel to Elmwood Park, N.J., for
their next competition at the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational on
Oct. 31.

KU PREPARES FOR PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS AT HERSHEY COUNTRY CLUB
KUTZTOWN,
Pa. —
The Kutztown University women’s golf team will travel to Hershey
Country Club in Hershey, Pa., for the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference Championships this Satur
day and Sunday.
KU
finished seventh among eight teams at the PSAC Championships last
year. This is the first year that the women’s championship will be
separate from the men’s championship. The PSAC schools competing
this year are Kutztown, West Chester and California (Pa.) who
finished second last year, first among women’s. In their first year
of competition is Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Gannon and Mercyhurst.
The
Golden Bears are led by sophomores Kelli Pry (so.
Coatesville/Coatesville) and Samantha Rumbley (so. Bel Air,
Md./C. Milton Wright). Pry has a team-best average of 82.6, with
a 79 on two different occasions. The first came at the Bucknell
Invitational and the second at the par-74 Berkleigh Golf Club at the
Kutztown Invitational, where she tied for a first place finish.
Rumbley is averaging 84.7 in her seven rounds this season. She led
the Golden Bears with an 81, to finish third in the KU Invitational,
helping finish second out of the five schools participating.
Chelsea
Corbo (fr. Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) is
averaging 85.7 in her first season with KU. Corbo shot a team best
77 at the Gannon Invitational, where she placed tied for fourth to
help the team finish third out of ten. Katie Tessler (sr.
Fayetteville/Heritage Academy), who is averaging 87.3, shot her
season best 81 in the first round of the Gannon Invitational. She
has shot in the 80’s in all but one of her seven rounds this season.
Lauren Foulke (sr. Kempton/Kutztown)
averages a 91.7for the Golden Bears, while Erin Arden (jr.
Somers, N.Y./Somers) has an average of 95.0. Foulke’s best
outing came at the Bucknell Invite when she posted an 89 and 87.
Arden shot a 94, placing 16th, at the Kutztown
Invitational.
Morgan Todd (fr. Flemington, N.J./ Hunterdon Central)
rounds out the rest of the Golden Bears who have competed this
season. Todd competed in the Kutztown Invitational and finished 23rd.
The
tournament tees off Saturday morning and will continue with the
second round on Sunday.

DENNIS SELECTED AS PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN BY STREET AND SMITH'S
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— Street and Smith’s released its list of preseason
All-Americans and Kutztown University men’s basketball guard
Stephen Dennis (jr. West Chester/Henderson) was selected as an
honorable mention.

Dennis, who led the Golden Bears last
season to the school’s second Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
East title, averaged 17.3 points per game. The 6-foot-5 junior also
had a team-high 149 rebounds, 41 blocks and 61 steals. He dished out
76 assists.
Dennis was the 2006-07 PSAC East
Rookie of the Year and was named to the conference’s first team last
season. He also was named to the Division II Bulletin All-Freshman
team in 2006-07.
The Golden Bears, who finished the
2007-08 season with a 19-9 overall record and a 10-2 mark in the
PSAC East, will open the season on Nov. 19 with a 7 p.m. contest at
Wilmington, Del. KU will travel to the University of the Sciences on
Nov. 22 before returning to Keystone Arena for its first home game
of the 2008-09 season against Goldey-Beacom at 7 p.m. Nov. 25

WOMEN'S SOCCER RANKED SECOND IN ATLANTIC REGION BY NCAA
KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University
women’s soccer team, with a 7-3-2 record in the region, is ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic Region by the NCAA Division II Women's
Soccer Committee.
The
final regular-season poll will be published on Oct. 28 and
championship selections will take place on Nov. 10.
The top six teams from each region will qualify
for the NCAA Championships.
KU (10-3-2) is ranked second in the region
behind West Chester. Bloomsburg is third, followed by East
Stroudsburg and West Virginia Wesleyan.
