Paul Schmitt—M OD Track
& Field
Paul Schmitt and Jon Moyer, of the men’s outdoor track & field team, are the final KU Student Bookstore Co-Athletes of the Week for the 2000-01 school year. Schmitt and Moyer placed second in the nation in the pole vault and javelin, respectively, at the NCAA Division II National Championships at SIU-Edwardsville. Schmitt’s vault of 16-6 3/4 was enough for his third career national-runner up finish, and fourth All-America performance, including indoor championships. Moyer improved upon last year’s third place national finish with a toss of 204-2. It is Moyer’s second All-America honor.

9/4 John Lapore of the men's soccer team earns the KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week in his first week of collegiate competition. Lapore led the Golden Bear charge in the 8-0 win over New Jersey Tech, scoring a hat trick of goals. On Saturday, Lapore scored the games only goal on a penalty kick against New Haven.
9/11 Phil Washington of the football team, is this weeks KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Washington was a key factor in the Golden Bears 21-8 win over Lock Haven on Saturday. Washington caught seven passes for 125 yards. His leaping touchdown catch as time expired in the first half gave KU a 14-5 lead. He then made another spectacular leaping grab to put KU up 21-5 in the second half.
9/18 Tim McCusker of the mens soccer team, is this weeks KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. McCusker scored what proved to be the difference in Kutztowns 3-2 win over Bloomsburg. It was Kutztowns first win over the Huskies since 1992. He also scored two goals and dished out an assist in KUs win over Slippery Rock.
9/25 Megan Seefeldt, of the womens cross country team, is this weeks KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Seefeldt led the Golden Bears to a tie for the team title at the Mount St. Marys Invitational on Saturday. Seefeldt finished second overall with a time of 18:53.9 on the 5K course.
10/2 Laura Boyko, of the womens golf team, is this weeks KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Boyko led the fledgling womens golf team to its first-ever team victories this week. Boyko shot a 47 on nine holes to win the Gettysburg Fall Invitational. She then shot an 82 on 18 holes to win the Western Maryland Fall Classic.
10/9 Megan Seefeldt, of the womens cross country team, and Alex Daecher, of the football team, are this weeks KU Student Bookstore Co-Athletes of the Week. Seefeldt won the Dickinson Invitational, placing first with a time of 18:18.4 on th 5K course. Seefeldt led KU to a fifth-place team finish. Daecher led the Golden Bear football team to a 17-16 win over regionally-ranked East Stroudsburg. Daecher returned an interception 25 yards for the winning score, had a fumble recovery and had a key tackle on a fourth-quarter goal-line stand. He had 10 tackles in the game.
10/16 Pete Mendez, a safety on the football team, is this weeks KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Mendez led the Golden Bears to their first-ever shutout victory over West Chester. His interception, blocked punt and fumble recovery led to Kutztowns first three scores in the 24-0 win. He had five tackles in the game.
10/23 Erin VanGorder, of the volleyball team, is this weeks KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. VanGorder led Kutztown to a 2-0 week including a crucial 3-1 win over Shippensburg. She had 21 kills and just one error in 46 attempts vs. the Lady Raiders. She also notched 13 digs. For the week, VanGorder tallied 37 kills (.357 hitting percentage) and 36 digs.
10/30 Megan Seefeldt, of the womens cross country team, is this weeks KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Seefeldt became Kutztowns first-ever individiual cross country champion, finishing ahead of 88 other runners to capture the 2000 title. She led the Golden Bears to a school-record tying third place finish as a team.
11/6 Mike de Marteleire, the quarterback for the football team, is this weeks KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. De Marteleire had a career day in KUs close loss to Bloomsburg on Saturday. He completed 32-of-49 passes for 397 yards and four touchdowns, while rushing for a team-high 75 yards. He accounted for 472 of Kutztowns 513 yards of total offense.
11/13 Kohlby ODonnell, of the wrestling team, is this weeks KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. ODonnell helped the Golden Bear wrestling team off to a successful start, placing first at 133 lbs. at the Montclair State Invitational. ODonnell was 3-0 in the weight class, defeating teammate Brian Burzynski for the individual title. KU finished third of seven teams.
11/20 Bill Guess, of the mens basketball team, is this weeks KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Guess scored a team-high 21 points in his Golden Bear debut as KU dropped a 74-60 decision at Felician. Guess was 10-of-12 from the free throw line and recorded three assists.
11/27 Brian Burzynski and Chris Jacobs, of the wrestling team, are this weeks KU student Bookstore Co-Athletes of the Week. Burzynski and Jacobs led the Golden Bears to a second-place finish at the annual Kutztown Invitational on Saturday. Burzynski was 4-0, defeating Princetons Seth Dunipace for the 125 lb. title. Jacobs was 4-0, defeating Princetons Albert Pendleton for the 157 lb. title.
12/4 Morgan Wager and Liz Powell, of the mens and womens swimming teams, respectively, are this weeks KU Student Bookstore Co-Athletes of the Week. Wager won seven individual and relay revents, while Powell won five individual and relay events to lead their teams to the titles at the annual Another Level Invitational. Wager swam season-best times in winning the 100 free (49.81) and 200 IM (2:03.02). He also won the 400 IM (4:30.84) and was part of four winning relays. Powell notched a season-best time in winning the 50 free (24.91). She also won the 100 (54.96) and 200 free (2:01.58) and was part of two winnning relays.
12/11 Brianne Homyak, of the womens basketball team, is this weeks KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Homyak scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Kutztown to a 61-57 overtime win over Holy Family. Homyak scored eight-straight points during a key second half run that gave KU its first lead of the half. Her second basket during the stretch put her over 1,000 points for her career. She later hit 4-of-4 free throws in the final two minutes to help send the game to overtime. She now has 1,009 career points.
1/2 Kevin Handy, of the mens basketball team, is this weeks KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Handy averaged 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in two games over the holiday break. In Kutztowns 74-66 win over PSAC West foe Shippensburg, Handy scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. In a loss to Columbia Union, Handy scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds.
1/8 Eric Lancaster, of the mens swimming team, is this weeks KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Lancaster, and the rest of the Golden Bears, competed in the Ocean Mile Swim in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, on Friday. Lancaster finished fifth of 56 competitors in the college freshmen race, with a time of 23:29.
1/16 Becky Savage, of the women’s basketball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Savage was a key factor in Kuztown’s 3-0 week last week. On Sunday, Savage scored a career high 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to help KU to a win over Clarion. She had nine points and seven rebounds against Lock Haven, and 10 points and six boards against Millersville. For the week, Savage averaged 14 points and 8.3 rebounds.
1/22 Justin Collins and Emily Foltz, of the indoor track & field team, are this week’s KU Student Bookstore Co-Athletes of the Week. Collins led the Golden Bear men’s team at the KU Indoor Invitational on Friday with a pair of wins in the 55-meter dash (6.58) and the long jump (22-0). Foltz led KU’s women’s team with two individual wins, taking the 500 in 1:21.8 and the 55 hurdles (8.69).
1/29 Brian Burzynski, of the wrestling team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Burzynski was Kutztown’s top finisher at the Division I dominated PSAC Championships, placing third in the 125 lb. weight class. He was 3-1 in the tournament, with all three wins over Division I opponents.
2/6 Mark Kannengieszer, of the men’s swimming team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Kannengieszer was instrumental in KU’s win over Rowan on Saturday. He won the 50 free (22.30) and the 100 free (48.58), and anchored the winning 400 medley relay team. The victory over Rowan gave KU a winning dual-meet record for the season.
2/12 Johannes Wingerter, of the men’s tennis team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Wingerter helped the men’s tennis team begin the spring season in fine fashion, winning the Flight A singles bracket at the Swarthmore Indoor Invitational. Wingerter downed opponents from Villanova and Swarthmore before defeating teammate Guillermo Ramos in the finals.
2/19 Brianne Homyak, of the women’s basketball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Homyak scored 20 points, dished out eight assists and grabbed seven rebounds in KU’s 69-41 win over East Stroudsburg on Wednesday. During the game, she moved into fifth place on KU’s career scoring list.
2/26 Paul Schmitt and Emily Foltz, of the men’s and women’s indoor track & field team, respectively, are this week’s KU Student Bookstore Co-Athletes of the Week. Schmitt set a meet record in winning the pole vault at the ECAC Championships. He was named Outstanding Field athlete as he led KU to its fifth-straight ECAC title. Foltz won two events to lead the KU women to its first-ever ECAC Championship. Foltz won the pentathlon with 3,205 points, and the 55-meter hurdles (8.37).
3/6 Kellie Evans, of the softball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Evans led KU to a 2-0 week from the pitchers’ circle and at the plate. Evans was the winning pitcher in both games, hurling a four-hit shutout with five Ks against Pfeiffer, and combining for a no-hitter against Charleston (WV). She didn’t allow a run in 9.2 innings. At the plate, Evans was 3-for-8 with four runs scored and two RBI.
3/12 Paul Schmitt, of the men’s indoor track & field team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Schmitt earned All-America honors with a third-place finish in the pole vault at the NCAA Division II Championships on Friday. Schmitt’s vault of 16-8 3/4 tied his own school record, set earlier this season.
3/19 Matt Rowan, of the men’s swimming team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Rowan represented KU at the NCAA Division II Championships on Friday. He finished ninth in the 100 back, with a time of 51.99. In winning the consolation final, Rowan earned honorable mention All-America status.
3/26 John Ruggiero, of the men’s tennis team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Although the Golden Bears were 2-3 in dual meets during their spring break, Ruggiero became the third KU men’s tennis player to reach 100 career wins in singles and doubles competition. The milestone came in KU’s 9-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday. Ruggiero was 3-1 in singles action and 2-2 in doubles play this week. He now has 103 career victories.
4/2 Stan Haraczka, of the baseball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Haraczka hit .429 (6-for-14) in KU’s five games last week. He drove in three runs and belted a trio of doubles. Haraczka moved into second place on KU’s career runs scored list, crossing the plate seven times this week for a career total of 127. He is 13 runs shy of the school’s all-time record.
4/9 Kellie Evans, of the softball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Evans hit .700 (14-for-20) in six games at the plate. She tallied two doubles, a triple and three home runs for a 1.35 slugging percentage. In addition, Evans was 4-0 on the mound, tallying a 0.31 ERA in 22.2 innings pitched. She tossed two complete games and struck out 19 batters in four appearances. In KU’s sweep of West Chester on Saturday, Evans was the winning pitcher in both games, and belted the game-winning home run in the seventh inning of game two.
4/16 Kellie Evans, of the softball team, wins the KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week award for the second-straight time. Evans continued her dominance at the plate and in the pitchers’ circle. In a 7-1 week for KU, Evans was 4-0 with a save and a 0.88 ERA in 31.2 innings pitched. She had 28 strikeouts and just six walks. At the plate, Evans was 9-for-24 (.375) with five runs and nine RBI. She had four doubles and two home runs. In KU’s 9-3 win over nationally-ranked Bloomsburg, Evans was 3-for-3 with three RBI, a home run, and hurled a complete-game with six strikeouts.
4/23 Guillermo Ramos and Alok Bhide, of the men’s tennis team, are this week’s KU Student Bookstore Co-Athletes of the Week. The tandem of Ramos and Bhide led Kutztown to its first-ever outright PSAC Championship over the weekend. The pair teamed to go 3-0 at first doubles and were both 2-0 in singles competition (neither finished his singles match against Bloomsburg after KU clinched victory). Bhide and Ramos have not lost as doubles partners, winning all 11 of their matches together this season.
4/30 Mike Waldt, of the baseball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Waldt led the Golden Bears to four key PSAC East wins last week, propelling KU into first place in the division. Waldt hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to lead KU to the game one victory over East Stroudsburg. He hit three home runs in the game one triumph over Shippensburg. For the week, Waldt hit .467 (7-15) with nine RBI, four homers and six runs scored.
5/7 Dennis Smeding, of the baseball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Smeding led KU with a .588 batting average (10-for-17). He knocked in seven runs, while scoring four times. He had two doubles and a triple. In KU’s playoff-berth clinching win over Millersville, Smeding doubled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth-inning to cap a four-run rally. The win clinched a playoff spot for KU. Against Bloomsburg, he was 4-for-5 with three RBI in game one, then 1-for-4 with two RBI and two runs in game two. In the doubleheader, Smeding set the KU single-season records for RBI (60) and hits (66).
5/14 Jon Moyer, of the men’s outdoor track & field team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Moyer was named Most Outstanding Field Athlete as he helped KU to its second-straight and fifth overall PSAC Championship over the weekend. Moyer won the javelin with an NCAA Automatic Qualifying performance of 220-8. His throw was nearly 20 feet longer than his closest competitor.
5/21 Joe Leach, of the baseball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Leach led the Golden Bears to the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional championship over the weekend. He had seven hits in 17 at-bats (.412 avg.) with three runs, two doubles and three RBI. He was 3-for-4 with two runs in KU’s opening game vs. Concord on Thursday. In the decisive game seven on Saturday, Leach hit a two-run double as part of KU’s five-run third inning.
