Indoor Track & Field

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 3/11 — KU’s Alison Maurer (sr. Lewisberry/Northern York) placed 11th in the 20-lb. Weight Throw at the NCAA Division II Championship.  Maurer, who entered the meet seeded 14th, had a toss of 52-3 1/4.  The winning throw was 62-5 3/4.  Maurer finished three places out of the team scoring spots, as the top eight places score in the team standings.  It was Maurer's second trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships.  She placed 10th last year.

Last Week’s Action

FRI 3/10 — Kutztown's had five wrestlers compete at the NCAA Divsion II Championship.  Chris Chambers (fr. Holland/Council Rock South), Bret Wade (sr. Phoenixville/Phoenixville) and Brandon Clemmer (so. Pottstown/Upper Perkiomen) were all 1-2 in their weight classes.  Kevin Kalbach (jr. Downingtown/Downingtown) and Andy Freas (jr. Trexlertown/Emmaus) were 0-2.  Chambers, in his first national championship, won his first bout at 149 in a 6-5 decision.  He then lost in the quarterfinals, 15-8.  Chambers lost in the consolations, 9-4.  Wade (184), in his second national championship, started his day with a loss, 7-2.  Wade came back and won his second bout 11-5, before losing, 14-5.  In his second national appearance, Clemmer was 1-2 at 133.  In the first match, Clemmer lost 5-1.  In the second session, Clemmer major decisioned, 12-0, before losing, 3-2.  In Kalbach’s first national championships appearance, he ended up going 0-2 at 157.  In Kalbach’s first bout, he lost, 6-3.  Kalbach put a fight in his second bout, but lost 3-2.  In his first national appearance, Freas went 0-2.  In the morning session, Freas lost by a major decision, 17-4.  In the evening session, Freas was pinned in 1:56.

SAT 3/11-SUN 3/12 — at Savannah (GA) Invitational

SAT 3/11 — Armstrong Atlantic State 8, Kutztown 4 - Kutztown took a 4-0 lead against unbeaten Armstrong Atlantic State, but couldn't hold on, losing 8-4.  Josh Fink (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) was 2-for-4 and Chad Lightcap (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Ryan Loper (jr. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) struck out five over the first four innings. 

California (PA) 8, Kutztown 2 - California jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back, handing Kutztown its first loss in-region this season.  KU scored two runs in the seventh on a bases loaded walk that drove in Mike McCardell (jr. West Chester/Henderson) and an RBI groundout by Kyle Kaschak (sr. New Providence/Solanco).  Nate Kranz (fr. Silver Spring/Cumberland Valley) was 2-for-4. 

SUN 3/12 — Wisconsin-Parkside 12, Kutztown 9 - Kutztown took a 7-0 lead in the first inning, but could not hold off Wisconsin-Parkside in the end,  losing 12-9.  KU had four home runs in the first inning.  Lightcap hit a two-run home run.  McCardell and Loper then hit back-to-back homers.  Matt Dierolf (so. Boyertown/Boyertown) hit a three-run home run to cap off the inning.  Phillip Rummel (so. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) took the loss for the Golden Bears.  McCardell started the game and pitched seven innings and struck out eight.

FRI 3/10– SUN 3/12 — at Francis Marion Patriot Inv.

FRI 3/10 — Kutztown 13, North Carolina Central 5 - Lindsay Bennett (so. Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) hit a solo home run in the third inning to open a nine-run inning as KU defeated NCC, 13-5.  Mary Costa started her first collegiate game, pitching three innings, giving up five hits, four runs and 3 earned runs.  Rachel Weidensaul (so. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) came in for three innings, striking out three to get the win.  Adriane Wilmer (jr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) was 4-for-5, scoring three runs and stealing two bases.  Bennett went 2-for-2 with a single and homerun.  Krista Cameron (fr. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

UNC-Pembroke 15, Kutztown 9 - UNC-Pembroke scored seven runs over the final two innings to break open and close game and hand Kutztown its first loss of the season.  Stephanie Denlinger (fr. Harleysville/Souderton) and Ashley Fitzgerald (fr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) had back-to-back homers in the first inning as KU took a 3-0 lead, but UNCP scored six runs over the next two innings to take the lead.  Fitzgerald was 4-for-4 with two RBI and the homer, while Denlinger was 2-for-4 with two RBI.  Denlinger was the losing pitcher, going the first six innings, striking out six. 

SAT 3/11 — Columbus State 5, Kutztown 2 - Kutztown fell behind 5-2 and a late rally fell short as KU fell to Columbus (GA) State.  Down 5-0 in the sixth, Stephanie Denlinger belted a two-run home run to get the Golden Bears on the board.   Willmer was 3-for-4. Stacey Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) was the losing pitcher, throwing all seven innings. 

Armstrong Atlantic State 6, Kutztown 5 - Armstrong Atlantic State scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to come from behind and defeat Kutztown, 6-5.  KU took a 3-0 lead on a three-run homer by Cameron in the first.  Jackie Messina (so. Allentown/Parkland) hit a solo home run in the third.  Stacey Denlinger went 5.2 innings, with three strikeouts.  Her sister, Stephanie, pitched the seventh and took the loss.

SUN 3/12 — USC-Aiken 4, Kutztown 3 - Cameron hit a home run in the first inning, but Kutztown could not score another run until the sixth inning.  USC-Aiken scored a run in the seventh to defeat KU 4-3.  Stephanie Denlinger pitched six innings and took the loss for the Golden Bears. 

Kutztown 7, Presbyterian 0 - Kutztown won its second game of the season, shutting out Presbyterian, 7-0. The Golden Bears hit three-straight home runs in the third when Stephanie Denlinger hit a two-run homer and Fitzgerald and Bennett hit solo shots.  Weidensaul pitched seven scoreless innings for the win.

Men’s Tennis (2-0, 1-0 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

SUN 3/12 — Kutztown 8, Wayne State (MI) 1,  (at Hilton Head, SC) – KU men’s tennis started its spring season with a win over Wayne State, 8-1.  The Golden Bears swept the three doubles matches.  Harsh Sharma (jr. Calcutta, INDIA) and Lukas Labitsch (fr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) won at first doubles, 8-4.  At second doubles, Radoslaw Hlubinski (sr. Warsaw, POLAND) and Santiago Baquerizo (fr. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) won 8-2 and at third doubles Jose Castro (fr. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) and Lukas Beman (jr. Woodend, AUSTRALIA) won, 8-3.  In the singles matches, Hlubinski won at seconds 6-4, 6-3.  Baquerizo followed at third winning 6-0, 6-0.  Labitsch won at fourths 6-4, 6-1.  Somdeep Appineni (jr. Hyderabad, INDIA) won 7-6, 6-3 at fifth and Rubens Vianna (Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) won 6-3, 6-4 at sixth.  This win was head coach Suresh Ramamurthi’s 100th win as the men’s coach.
