SPRING SPORTS

Baseball (24-9, 6-2 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       TUE 4/4 — Kutztown 15, Philadelphia 13 - Ryan Loper (jr. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) was 5-for-5 with three runs, four RBI and had the go-ahead hit to lead Kutztown to a 15-13 shootout win over Philadelphia.  Loper's leadoff homer in the seventh inning broke a 9-9 tie.  Gary Stricker (sr. Croydon/Conwell Egan-Catholic) and Josh Fink (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) drove in runs later in the inning and Bryan Riggins (so. Glenmoore/Downingtown West) blasted a two-run homer in the eighth for more breathing room.  Jeff Craig was 3-for-6 with three RBI, while Mike McCardell (jr. West Chester/Henderson) was 2-for-5 with three runs.  Paul Cashin (jr. Collingdale/Monsignor Bonner) was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.  Stricker drove in two runs.  Derick Reis (so. Jim Thorpe/Jim Thorpe) pitched 2.1 innings of relief to get the win. 

WED 4/5 — Kutztown 13, Lebanon Valley 6 - Kutztown continued to roll through its competition defeating Lebanon Valley, 13-6.  Lebanon Valley jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the second inning, but KU answered.  Nate Kranz (fr. Silver Spring/Cumberland Valley) hit a sacrifice fly to start a four-run rally in the fourth.  Chad Lightcap (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown) doubled in a run and Jeff Craig (jr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) drove in another to make it 6-5.  In the seventh, Kranz singled in a run to tie it, and then scored the go-ahead run on a single by LightcapKranz was 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBI.  Fink was 2-for-4 with two runs, Lightcap was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI, Craig was 3-for-5.  Loper and Riggins drove in two runs apiece.  Steve Craig (fr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) picked up his first collegiate victory, tossing five scoreless and hitless innings of relief. 

FRI 4/7 — West Chester 5, Kutztown 4 - Kutztown's 16-game winning streak was snapped at West Chester as the Golden Rams scored the winning run in the fifth inning, 5-4.  Jeff Craig was 2-for-3 with a double.  McCardell and Kranz both went 2-for-3.  Josh Fink hit a triple.

Kutztown 8, West Chester 6 - Kutztown won the second game, 8-6, to split the double header at West Chester.  McCardell pitched one inning for his KU single season record ninth save of 2006.  Phillip Rummel (so. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) came on in relief for the win.  Cashin and Loper singled in the fifth.  Dan Gavlick (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) hit a RBI single to put KU up, 7-6.  Fink tripled in the sixth and scored on a Lightcap single to give KU an 8-6 lead.  Loper (2-for-4), Cashin (2-for-3) and John Shade (jr. Reading/Muhlenberg) each hit a double.  McCardell was 2-for-4, stretching his hitting streak to 21 games.

SAT 4/8 — WEST CHESTER 5, KUTZTOWN 4 - West Chester jumped out to a 5-0 lead and a late Kutztown rally fell short, as the Rams won, 5-4.  Down 5-0, KU got back in the game in the fourth, when Jeff Craig scored on a two-out WCU error.  In the fifth, Lightcap belted a three-run home run to make it 5-4. Reis pitched the final 2.1 scoreless innings.  McCardell was 0-for-3 in the game, snapping his 21-game hitting streak.

KUTZTOWN 6, WEST CHESTER 2 - Kutztown scored six unearned runs over the first two innings to salvage a split vs. West Chester, 6-2.  In the first inning, WCU committed a costly error, allowing Loper to drive in a run on a force out and Gavlick to knock another home on a single.  The Rams booted two more balls in the second, allowing Jeff Craig to hit a two-run single, followed by RBI hits by Cashin and Gavlick McCardell went the distance for KU to pick up his third win win.  He struck out 10.  Craig was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Gavlick was 3-for-3 with two RBI.  Fink scored twice.

Women’s Golf

Last Week’s Action

MON 4/3 — at Muhlenberg Invitational – 2nd/6 Holly Shubilla (jr. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) (81) and Angela Petak (so. Brockway/Brockway) (81) finished second and third at Muhlenberg Invitational, at the Lehigh Country Club, Par 71, as Kutztown placed second, shooting 335. Lehigh finished first shooting 334.  Gettysburg was third (386), Dickinson fourth (405), Muhlenberg fifth (416) and Lafayette sixth (448).  Tristin Suzenski (jr. Pottstown/St. Pius X) finished eighth, shooting 86.  Bethany Adams (fr. Allentown/Parkland) was ninth (87) and Lauren Foulke (fr. Kempton/Kutztown) was eleventh (88).  (*tiebreaker for second place was match of cards on fifth hole)

THU 4/6 — KUTZTOWN 2, SHIPPENSBURG 1 - Stephanie Denlinger (fr. Harleysville/Souderton) hit a walkoff home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give KU the 2-1 win over Shippensburg.  A home run by Krista Cameron (fr. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) in the fourth tied it the game, 1-1.  Stacey Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) pitched a complete game, striking out seven, for her sixth win on the season. 

SHIPPENSBURG 5, KUTZTOWN 0 - Shippensburg held Kutztown to four hits in the nightcap to salvage a split in the doubleheader, 5-0.  Stephanie Denlinger had two of KU's four hits, going 2-for-3 in the game.  Rachel Weidensaul (so. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) pitched the complete game, taking the loss.

SAT 4/8 — KUTZTOWN 4, WEST CHESTER 1- Stephanie Denlinger was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer to lead Kutztown to a 4-1 win over West Chester.  Stephanie Denlinger's two-run home run in the fifth inning gave KU a 4-0 lead.  Stephanie Denlinger scored in the fourth on Lindsay Bennett's (so. Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) two-run double as KU broke a 0-0 tie.  Ashley Fitzgerald (fr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) and Adriane Willmer (jr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) were both 2-for-3.  Weidensaul went the first 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and no runs to get the win.  Stacey Denlinger relieved Weidensaul with two out in the fifth and went the final 2.1, allowing a run on two hits with three strikeouts.  Stacey Denlinger recorded her first career save.

KUTZTOWN 8, WEST CHESTER 0 (6 inn) - Kutztown scored five

 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cap off an 8-0 victory over West Chester, and complete the PSAC East sweep.  Kathy Gregg (so. Narvon/Garden Spot) hit her first collegiate home run, a three-run shot, in the second inning.   Jackie Messina (so. Allentown/Parkland) and Kim Morrison (fr. Newmarket, ONT/Sir William Mulock) got the sixth-inning rally started with RBI hits.  A Golden Ram error prolonged the inning, and KU took advantage, scoring on the play, a bases-loaded walk and ending the game on Fitzgerald's RBI single.  Morrison and Fitzgerald were 2-for-4, while Dani Spalik (jr. Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) was 2-for-3.  Stephanie Denlinger pitched the two-hit shutout, striking out one for her first collegiate win.

TUE 4/4 — KUTZTOWN 9, WEST CHESTER 0 - Kutztown won all nine matches to defeat West Chester. Santiago Baquerizo (fr. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) and Radoslaw Hlubinski (sr. Warsaw, POLAND) picked up a win in the first doubles match, 8-1. Somdeep Appineni (jr. Hyderabad, INDIA) and Lukas Beman (jr. Woodend, AUSTRALIA) took second doubles, 8-1 and Sendhur Gautham (fr. Chennai, INDIA/Central York {PA}) and Rubens Vianna (so. Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) rounded out the sweep at third doubles, 8-2.  Baquerizo won at first singles, 6-2, 6-2. Hlubinski won second singles, 6-1, 6-0. Appineni won third, 6-2, 6-2. Beman won at fourth, 6-0, 6-0.  Gautham won at fifth, 6-0, 6-1 and Jose Castro (fr. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) won sixth, 6-0, 6-1.

TUE 4/4 — KUTZTOWN 8, WEST CHESTER 1 - Kutztown’s women swept all three double matches and were near perfect in singles en route to a 8-1 win over West Chester.  Kerstin Kloeffer (sr. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY) and Priya Pachkawde (jr. Nasik, INDIA) picked up a win in the first doubles match, 8-1. Magaly Peter (fr. Mundolsheim, FRANCE) and Jharna Nansi (jr. Mumbai, INDIA) swept eight games in the second doubles, 8-0. Lauren Losoncy (sr. Shillington/Govenor Mifflen) and Kristen Bodalski (sr. Media/Cardinal O’Hara) took the third, 8-4.  Kloeffer, 6-0, 6-0, Peter, 6-1, 6-0, Pachkawde, 7-5, 7-5, Nansi, 6-1, 6-2, and Losoncy, 6-0, 6-1, won in straight sets at first, second, third, fourth and fifth singles, respectively.

SUN 4/9 — Kutztown 8, Millersville 1 - Kutztown remained unbeaten in PSAC East play, defeating Millersville, 8-1.  Kloeffer and Pachkawde won in first doubles, 8-1.  Peter and Nansi picked up a win at second doubles, 8-0.  Losoncy and Bodalski complete the sweep at third doubles, 8-1.  Kloeffer picked up w a win at first singles, 6-0, 6-1.  Peter won at second singles, 6-1, 6-0.  Pachkawde won at third, 6-1, 6-4.  Nansi picked up a win at fourth, 6-0, 6-1 and Losoncy won at fifth, 6-0, 6-0.

SAT 4/8 — at PSAC East Challenge

Men: 1st/8Kutztown’s men’s outdoor track and field team took first place with 180 points, at the PSAC East Challenge at Lock Haven.  Lock Haven was second with 154.5 and East Stroudsburg was third with 95 points.  Millersville placed fourth (86), Cheyney fifth (80.5), West Chester sixth (61), Bloomsburg seventh (39) and Mansfield eighth (31).  The 4x400 relay team of Tony Hegedus (jr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh), Kendel Dixon (fr. Atglen/Octorara), Ryan Jagielski (fr. Howell, NJ/Coltsneck) and Steve Hixson (so. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) placed first in a time of 3:19.28.  The 4x100 relay team of Mike Turner (fr. Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg), Dixon, Hixson and Justin Gibbs (so. Pottstown/Pottstown) came in second in 43.31.  Hegedus placed first in the 400 hurdles (53.54).  Matt Carroll (sr. Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) came in first in the 400 (49.83) and second in the 200 (22.27).  Hixson placed fourth in the 400 (51.99).  Dixon was sixth in the 200 (23.14).  KU had three placed winners in the 3000 steeplechase.  Pat Bone (so. Pipersville/Central Bucks West) came in first (9:57.10), Joe Haughey (jr. Richboro/Council Rock South) was second (9:57.20) and Nate Manbeck (so. Womelsdorf/Tulpehocken) was fourth (10:25.20).  In the 110 hurdles, Vonkurt Redley (so. Elkins Park/Cheltenham) placed second (15.23) and Gibbs came in fifth (15.46).  Jagielski (1:58.79) was in fourth in the 800 and Billy Boorse (jr. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) was sixth (1:59.76).  Dave Tidey (sr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) placed third in the 1500 (4:09.59).  In the field events, Steve Tyson (so. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) placed first in the shot put (51-9), first in the discus (139-4) and second in the hammer (136-9).  Steve Winters (sr. Harrisburg/Cedar Cliff) placed first in the pole vault with a vault of 15-6.  Mike Provenzano (sr. Carlisle/Carlisle) was second (14-0).  Turner was second in the long jump (22-7 ¼).  Benn Trasatt (so. Mowsville/Schuylkill Valley) placed fifth in the discus (130-4) and the hammer (127-9).  Chris Boutsikaris (fr. Newton, NJ/Newton) came in fifth in the javelin (175-5).  Cody Hartzler (fr. Belleville/Indian Valley) placed third in the high jump (6-1).

Women: 2/8: Kutztown women placed second with 167 points at the PSAC East Challenge.  Lock Haven came in first with 217 points.  East Stroudsburg was third with 149.  Bloomsburg was fourth (58), Millersville was fifth (56.5), West Chester sixth (50), Mansfield seventh (39) and Cheyney eighth (11).  The 4x400 relay team of Jewel Daye (fr. Philadelphia/Central High), Doofan Tor-Agbidye (fr. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg), Jessica Donovan (fr. Newtown/Pennsbury) and Laura Kline (sr. Reading/Reading) came in first in a time of 4:01.01.  The 4x100 relay team of Katie Quinn (fr. Glenolden/Interboro), Kline, Daye and Tor-Agbidye finished second with a time of 50.69.  Tor-Agbidye placed second in the 200 (26.440 and third in the 100 (12.74).  Daye placed sixth in the 100 (13.40) and Quinn finished sixth in the 200 (27.50).  Kline came in first in the 400 (1:03.75) and Donovan placed fifth (1:10.80).  Desiree Bower (jr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) was first in the 3000 steeplechase in 11:31.70.  Cheryl Dingman (fr. Lansdale/North Penn) came in second in the 3000 (10:21.25).  Stephanie Williams (so. Harrisburg/Riverside) was second in the 1500 (5:10.49) and Molly Lare (jr. Bethlehem/Liberty) was third (5:18.64).  Rebecca Kerchak (fr. Sinking Spring/Wilson) finished third in the 100 hurdles (16.53).  Chelsea Thomas (jr. Sellersville/Pennridge) placed sixth in the 800 (2:30.49).  In the field events, Alison Maurer (sr. Lewisberry/Northern York) came in first in the hammer throw with a NCAA provisional throw of 176-0.  Chrissy Procopio (sr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) was second (163-7).  Maurer finished fourth in the discus (125-4).  Lindsay Runkle (fr. Pottsville/Pottsville) placed first in the pole vault with a vault of 10-6.  Laura Deller (so. York/Dallastown) finished second in the long jump (17-9) and Renee Marchand (jr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) was sixth (17-0).  Michelle Hughes (so. Warminster/William Tennent) was third in the shot put (39-2).  In the triple jump, Amy Schaeffer (sr. Richland/ELCO) was fourth (35-0 ½).  Alison Kipp (fr. Bethlehem/Saucon Valley) was fourth in the javelin (113-10) and Sandra Creason (so. Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) was sixth (103-2).
