SPRING SPORTS

Baseball (29-11, 10-4 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       MON 4/17 — Kutztown 8, Bloomsburg 6 - Kutztown erupted for eight runs in the third inning, then held on for an 8-6 win over Bloomsburg in the first game of a PSAC East doubleheader.  Bryan Riggins (so. Glenmoore/Downingtown West) and Gary Stricker (sr. Croydon/Conwell Egan-Catholic) had RBI hits in the third.  Ryan Loper (jr. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) went the first six innings, striking out four, for his fifth win of the season.  Derick Reis (so. Jim Thorpe/Jim Thorpe) notched hits first save, retiring three of four batters he faced.  Josh Fink (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) was 2-for-3, Jeff Craig (jr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) was 2-for-4 and Matt Dierolf (so. Boyertown/Boyertown) was 2-for-2 with two stolen bases. 

Kutztown 10, Bloomsburg 0 - Philip Rummel (so. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) and Steve Craig (fr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) combined on a two-hit shutout as KU completed the sweep of Bloomsburg, 10-0.  Rummel allowed two hits over six innings, striking out three.  Steve Craig struck out one in a perfect seventh inning.  KU scored single runs in the first, third and fifth before breaking it open with four in the sixth and three in the seventh.  Fink was 2-for-3, Jeff Craig was 2-for-4 and Nate Kranz (fr. Silver Spring/Cumberland Valley) was 3-for-4. 

TUE 4/18 — Kutztown 10, Shippensburg 6 - Kyle Costello (sr. Plains/Coughlin) was 2-for-5 with four RBI as Kutztown defeated Shippensburg, 10-6.  Costello hit an RBI single in the first inning, as KU took a 2-0 lead.  Costello's two-run single in the second made it 4-0.  Jeff Craig was 3-for-5 with three runs, Loper was 2-for-4 with two RBI.  Fink, Dierolf and Stricker each scored two runs, while Chad Lightcap (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown) drove in two.  Mike McCardell (jr. West Chester/Henderson) pitched the first five innings, allowing five hits and five runs with six strikeouts for his fourth win. 

FRI 4/21 — MANSFIELD 2, KUTZTOWN 1 - Mansfield struck for two runs in the top of the sixth inning and held on for the 2-1 win over Kutztown in the first game of a PSAC East doubleheader.  The Mounties took advantage of a KU error to score its runs.  In the bottom of the sixth, Loper belted a two-out homer to cut the lead in half, but KU couldn't manufacture the tying run.  KU was held to just six hits by six different batters.  Matt Maradeo (sr. Nesquehoning/Panther Valley) (5-3) was the losing pitcher, despite allowing just six hits and one earned run over six innings.  He struck out six. 

KUTZTOWN 5, MANSFIELD 0 - Bill Loskiewicz (sr. Philadelphia/Nuemann-Garretti) pitched a five hit shut-out en route to his third win on the season as Kutztown salvaged a split, beating Mansfield, 5-0 in game two.  Loskiewicz pitched seven scoreless innings while striking out eight.  Kranz hit a triple to start the third inning and scored on a Dierolf grounder.  Dierolf reached base after the shortstop bobbled the ball and ended up scoring on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Craig.  Kutztown put three more runs on the board in the fourth inning.  Kranz was 2-for-2.

Women’s Golf

TUE 4/18- at Ursinus Invitational - 2nd/5– Kutztown placed second out of five at the par 72, RiverCrest Golf Club in Oaks, PA.  Lehigh came in first, shooting 339.  Kutztown was second with 356.  Gettysburg finished third, 398, Dickinson fourth, 417, and Muhlenberg fifth, 426.  Angela Petak (jr. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) and Lauren Foulke (fr. Kempton/Kutztown) each shot an 87 to tie for fifth.  Tristin Suzenski (jr. Pottstown/St. Pius X) and Holly Shubilla (jr. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) each shot 91 to tie for ninth and Bethany Adams (fr. Allentown/Parkland) shot a 98 to tie for 14th. FRI 4/21 — GOLDEN BEAR INVITATIONAL — 5th/6 – Kutztown finished fifth out of six in the Golden Bear Invitational held at the 5,824 yards, par 74 Berkleigh Country Club in Kutztown, PA.  The invitational lasted one round due to inclement weather on the second day.  Leading the pack was Mount St. Mary’s, shooting 355.  California (PA) and Lehigh were second shooting 357.  Wagner was fourth, 366, Kutztown fifth, 371, and McDaniel sixth, 391.  Shubilla tied for fifth to lead the Golden Bears, shooting 88.  Adams shot a 90 (t-12).  Foulke shot 94 (t-19) and Suzenski recorded a 99 (24).

Last Week’s Action

MON 4/17 — Kutztown 2, Mansfield 1 - Stephanie Denlinger’s (fr. Harleysville/Souderton) home run broke a 1-1 tie and led Kutztown to a 2-1 win over Mansfield in the first game of a PSAC East doubleheader.  Denlinger singled and scored on Krista Cameron's (fr. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) RBI double in the fourth to tie the score at 1-1.  Denlinger was 3-for-3.  Her sister, Stacey Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton), went the distance in the pitcher's circle for the win (8-3).  She allowed five hits, one run and struck out four.  Jackie Messina (so. Allentown/Parkland) was 2-for 3.

Kutztown 6, Mansfield 0 - Rachel Weidensaul (so. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) pitched a seven-hit shutout as Kutztown completed the PSAC East sweep at Mansfield.  Weidensaul struck out five over seven innings to pick up her 14th win.  Stephanie Denlinger drove in two runs in the first with a single.  Lindsay Bennett (so. Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) knocked in KU's next three, on a two-run double in the third and a run-scoring double in the fifth.  Jennie Lincoln's (so. Stafford, VA/North Stafford) solo homer capped the scoring in the seventh.  Bennett was 3-for-4 with three RBI.  Lincoln was 2-for 2. 

WED 4/19 — Kutztown 6, East Stroudsburg 3 - Kutztown scored three runs in the third inning to beat East Stroudsburg, 6-3, in game one of the PSAC East doubleheader.  Stacey Denlinger pitched the complete game, striking out five, for her ninth win of the season.  Cameron, Ashley Fitzgerald (sr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) and Messina each hit home runs for KU.  Adriane Willmer (jr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) went 2-for-3 with a double.  Fitzgerald was 3-for-4.

Kutztown 11, East Stroudsburg 3 - Kutztown completed the sweep of ESU with an 11-3 win in game two.  Stephanie Denlinger hit her 13th homer of the season, passing Kellie Evans (2002) and Jen Schock (1995) for KU's single-season record.  She went 3-for-5 in the game, adding a double to her home run.  Weidensaul started the game, pitching three innings and striking out two.  Stephanie Denlinger came in the fourth inning for relief and her second win of the season, striking out three.  Cameron was 3-for-4 with a home run.  Fitzgerald was 3-for-5 with a double.

Men’s Tennis (12-2, 5-0 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

MON 4/17 — Concordia (NY) 5, Kutztown 4 - Kutztown's eight-match winning streak was snapped, with a 5-4 loss at Concordia (NY).  KU took a 2-1 lead after doubles, as Harsh Sharma (jr. Calcutta, INDIA) and Lukas Labitsch (fr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) won at first doubles, 8-6, and Santiago Baquerizo (fr. Guayaquil, ECUADOR)and Radoslaw Hlubinski (sr. Warsaw, POLAND) won second doubles, 8-4.  Concordia, however, won four of six singles seeds to pull out the team win.  Sharma, 7-5, 7-6, at #2 singles, and Labitsch, 6-2, 6-3, at #4, accounted for KU's singles points. 

FRI 4/21 — at PSAC Championships — Kutztown 8, Slippery Rock 0 - Kutztown cruised to an 8-0 win over Slippery Rock in a PSAC men's tennis semifinal.  Kutztown swept the doubles matches, with Sharma and Labitsch winning #1, 8-1, Hlubinski and Baquerizo winning #2, 8-3, and Jose Castro (fr. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) and Rubens Vianna (so. Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) winning #3, 8-4.  KU won the first and second matches, as well as the fourth-through-sixth singles.  Baquerizo, 6-2, 6-0, and Labitsch, 6-0, 6-0, won at #1 and #2.  Lukas Beman (jr. Woodend, AUSTRALIA), 6-1, 6-1, Castro, 6-1, 6-0, and Sendur Gautham (fr. Chennai, INDIA/Central York {PA}), 6-0, 6-0, won #4-#6.

SUN 4/23 — Kutztown 5, Millersville 0 - Kutztown won its third-straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference men's tennis championship with a 5-0 win over Millersville.  Kutztown jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles, picking up victories from Sharma and Labitsch, 8-3, at first doubles, Baquerizo and Castro, 8-2, at second doubles, and Beman and Somdeep Appineni (jr. Hyderabad, INDIA), 8-0, at third doubles.  In singles, KU needed just two points to finish off the match, getting those points from Labitsch at third singles, 6-2, 6-1, and Vianna at fifth singles, 6-2, 6-0. Both won in straight sets.  The other four singles matches were not finished after KU recorded the decisive team points.  Labitsch was named the tournament's most valuable player, after winning both his singles and doubles matches. WED 4/19 — KUTZTOWN 6, QUEENS 3 - Kutztown defeated Queens 6-3.  Kutztown won only one doubles match with Magaly Peter (fr. Mundolsheim, FRANCE) and Jharna Nansi (jr. Mumbai, INDIA) winning 8-4.  The Golden Bears came back and won 1-through-5 singles to take the match.  Kerstin Kloeffer (sr. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY) won first singles, 6-4, 6-3.  Peter won second singles 6-4, 6-2, Priya Pachkawde (jr. Nasik, INDIA) won third singles, 6-2, 6-0, Lauren Losoncy (sr. Shillington/Governor Mifflin) won fourth, 6-2, 6-3 and Nansi won fifth, 6-3, 6-1.

FRI 4/21 — at PSAC Championships — California (PA) 5, Kutztown 4 - Kutztown's hopes for a PSAC title came to an end with a tough 5-4 loss to California (PA) in a semifinal match.  California took a 2-1 lead after doubles, winning #1 and #3.  KU's sole doubles point came from the team of Peter and Nansi at second doubles, 8-3.  The teams then split the singles matches, with KU winning #2, #3 and #6.  Peter won in three sets at #2, 6-1, 2-6, 6-0, while Pachkawde won at #3, 6-1, 6-4, and Kristen Bodalski (sr. Media/Cardinal O’Hara) won at #6, 7-5, 6-2.

Last Week’s Action

SUN 4/23 — at East Stroudsburg/Lafayette Invitational — Kutztown traveled to East Stroudsburg to compete in the East Stroudsburg/Lafayette Invitational.  Highlights for the KU women were:  Laura Kline (sr. eading/Reading) set a new KU record in the 400 meter hurdles, placing second in a time of 1:02.07. The time is also a NCAA provisional time.  Renee Marchand (jr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) placed first in the 100 hurdles in a time of 15.86.  Jaci Pfeiffer (sr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) was second in 16.16.  Marchand ran the third leg and Kline ran anchor of the winning 4x400 relay team (4:04.11).  Jewel Day (fr. Philadelphia/Central High) led off and Doofan Tor-Adbidye (fr. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) ran the second leg.  Tor-Agbidye placed second in the 400 (57.95).  Cheryl Dingman (fr. Lansdale/North Penn) finished second in the 800 (2:24.00).  Laura Deller (so. York/Dallastown) came in first in the long jump (17-0).  Alison Maurer (sr. Lewisberry/Northern York) placed second in the hammer throw (171-8) and Chrissy Procopio (sr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) was second (166-2).  Both throws are NCAA provisional throws. 

For the men, the 4x400 relay team of Mike Turner (fr. Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg), Kendel Dixon (fr. Atglen/Octorara), Matt Carroll (sr. Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) and Tony Hegedus (jr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) placed first in a time of 3:18.33.  The 4x100 relay team of Turner, Dixon, Steve Hixson (so. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) and Steve Winters (sr. Harrisburg/Cedar Cliff) placed second in 43.03.  Tuner placed first in the 100 (11.30), second in the 200 (22.43) and second in the long jump (22-0).  Hixson was fourth in the 200 (22.73).  Carroll was first in the 400 (48.81) and Hegedus was first in the 400 hurdles (53.55).  Ryan Jagielski (fr. Howell, NJ/Coltsneck) placed fifth in the 800 (1:57.10) while Billy Boorse (jr. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) came in sixth (1:57.77).  Dave Tidey (sr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) finished sixth in the 1500 (4:05.94).  Winters came in first in the pole vault (15-1), Mike Provenzano (sr. Carlisle/Carlisle) was second (14-7) and Mike Zebert (jr. West Chester/Henderson) was third (13-7).  Steve Tyson (so. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) placed second shot put (47-9).  Cody Hartzler (sr. Belleville/Indian Valley) finished second in the high jump (6-4).
