THU 5/18 – Kutztown 7, Ohio Valley 0Philip Rummel (so. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) pitched eight shutout innings and Kutztown turned six double plays as the Golden Bears defeated Ohio Valley, 7-0, in the opening game of the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional at West Virginia State Thursday morning.  Josh Fink (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while Gary Stricker (sr. Croydon/Conwell Egan) was 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and a home run.  Kyle Costello (sr. Plains/Coughlin) and Nate Kranz (fr. Silver Spring/Cumberland Valley) each drove in a pair of runs for the Golden Bears.  Rummel (5-3) was superb on the mound for KU.  He struck out just one and allowed seven hits, but forced 12 ground outs in the hitter-friendly confines of Calvin Bailey Field.  Rummel was the beneficiary of a season-high six double plays turned by his defense.  Derick Reis (so. Lehighton/Jim Thorpe) hurled a scoreless ninth inning to close the door on the Fighting Scots.  OVU had 11 base runners in the game, but six were doubled off, including one twin killing off a diving catch by left fielder Garrison Rausch (so. Allentown/Parkland), who threw to Mike McCardell (jr. West Chester/Henderson) at first to double off the runner in the seventh.

FRI 5/19 – West Chester 5, Kutztown 1 – Kutztown dropped to the loser’s bracket with the 5-1 loss to West Chester.  WCU took the lead in the third when two runs scored on an error.  KU cut it to 2-1 on an RBI single by Craig in the bottom of the third, but the Rams scored twice more in the fifth to seal it.  Fink, Craig and Kranz were all 2-for-4 for the Golden Bears.  McCardell (6-1) suffered his first loss of the year.  He pitched 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, three earned.  He struck out six.

SAT 5/20 – Kutztown 10, Ohio Valley 3 – Kutztown stayed alive in the North Atlantic Regional, with a 10-3 win over Ohio Valley Saturday Afternoon.  KU’s win knocked the Fighting Scots out of the tournament.  Reis (3-0) pitched 3.1 scoreless innings to pick up the win.  He had five strikeouts.  Ryan Loper (jr. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) went the first 4.2.  Justin Jachowicz (so. Summit Hill/Panther Valley) hurled a scoreless ninth.  Rausch was 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI, including an inside-the-park home run.  Craig was 3-for-5.  Loper was 3-for-5 with two RBI.  Dierolf and McCardell had two hits apiece.  Stricker drove in three runs.  KU had to come from behind to win.  Down 3-2 in the sixth, KU scored eight unanswered runs to pull out the win.

Kutztown 15, West Virginia State 11 – KU survived its second-straight elimination game, ousting the host Yellow Jackets, 15-11, Saturday afternoon.  Kutztown jumped out to an 8-0 lead, saw it disappear, only to retake a six-run lead, which proved to be enough against the potent Yellow Jackets.  Bill Loskiewictz (sr. Philadelphia/Neumann Garretti) got the win (5-3), allowing 10 hits, but only 2 runs over 4.2 innings of relief.   Fink (3-4, 2 RBI) and Loper (3-for-5, 3 runs) combined for six of KU's 15 hits.  McCardell, Costello and Kranz had two hits each, while Craig, Costello and Stricker drove in two runs apiece.

SUN 5/21 – Kutztown 7, West Chester 4 – Kutztown remained alive in the North Atlantic Regional, defeating West Chester, 7-4, to force a decisive Game 11.   Kutztown was led by Rausch, who was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.  Stricker was 2-for-4 with two runs, a home run and three RBI.  Rummel (6-3), working on two-days rest, pitched 7.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs with six strikeouts for the win.  McCardell pitched a scoreless ninth to record his 13th save of the year bettering both his single-season record, while eclipsing the career mark of 16.

West Chester 14 Kutztown 3 – Kutztown University’s baseball season came to a close with a 14-3 loss to West Chester in the championship game of the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional.  Kutztown, which set a school record with 44 victories this season, saw its bid for its fourth trip to the national tournament falls one game short.  The Golden Rams jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.  West Chester took a 4-0 lead after the fifth inning, then broke it open with four runs in the sixth, three in the seventh and three in the ninth.  McCardell had a solo homer in the sixth and Rausch and Dan Gavlick (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) had RBI singles in the eighth to account for KU’s runs.  Craig was 3-for-5 to lead KU.   In his final career plate appearance, Fink was hit by a pitch, his school-record 24th of the season.
