State)
THU 5/18 –
Kutztown 7, Ohio Valley 0 –
Philip
Rummel (so. Exeter/West-Mont Christian)
pitched eight shutout innings and Kutztown turned six double plays
as the Golden Bears defeated Ohio Valley, 7-0, in the opening game
of the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional at West Virginia
State Thursday morning.
Josh Fink (sr.
Hatfield/North Penn) was
2-for-5 with two runs scored, while
Gary Stricker (sr.
Croydon/Conwell Egan) was
2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and a home run.
Kyle Costello (sr.
Plains/Coughlin) and
Nate Kranz (fr.
Silver Spring/Cumberland Valley)
each drove in a pair of runs for the Golden Bears.
Rummel
(5-3) was superb on the mound for KU. He struck out just one and
allowed seven hits, but forced 12 ground outs in the hitter-friendly
confines of Calvin Bailey Field. Rummel
was the beneficiary of a season-high six double plays turned by his
defense.
Derick Reis (so. Lehighton/Jim Thorpe)
hurled a scoreless ninth inning to close the door on the Fighting
Scots. OVU had 11 base runners in the game, but six were doubled
off, including one twin killing off a diving catch by left fielder
Garrison
Rausch (so. Allentown/Parkland),
who threw to
Mike McCardell
(jr. West Chester/Henderson)
at first to double off the runner in the seventh.
FRI 5/19 – West
Chester 5, Kutztown 1 –
Kutztown dropped to the loser’s bracket with the 5-1 loss to West
Chester. WCU took the lead in the third when two runs scored on an
error. KU cut it to 2-1 on an RBI single by
Craig
in the bottom of the third, but the
Rams scored twice more in the fifth to seal it.
Fink,
Craig
and Kranz
were all 2-for-4 for the Golden Bears.
McCardell
(6-1) suffered his first loss of the year. He pitched 6.2 innings,
allowing seven hits and four runs, three earned. He struck out six.
SAT 5/20 –
Kutztown 10, Ohio Valley 3 –
Kutztown stayed alive in the North Atlantic Regional, with a 10-3
win over Ohio Valley Saturday Afternoon. KU’s win knocked the
Fighting Scots out of the tournament.
Reis
(3-0) pitched 3.1 scoreless innings to pick up the win. He had five
strikeouts.
Ryan
Loper (jr.
Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley)
went the first 4.2.
Justin Jachowicz
(so. Summit Hill/Panther Valley)
hurled a scoreless ninth.
Rausch
was 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI, including an inside-the-park
home run.
Craig was 3-for-5.
Loper
was 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Dierolf
and
McCardell had two hits
apiece.
Stricker drove in three runs.
KU had to come from behind to win. Down 3-2 in the sixth, KU scored
eight unanswered runs to pull out the win.
Kutztown 15, West
Virginia State 11 – KU
survived its second-straight elimination game, ousting the host
Yellow Jackets, 15-11, Saturday afternoon. Kutztown jumped out to
an 8-0 lead, saw it disappear, only to retake a six-run lead, which
proved to be enough against the potent Yellow Jackets.
Bill Loskiewictz
(sr. Philadelphia/Neumann Garretti)
got the win (5-3), allowing 10 hits,
but only 2 runs over 4.2 innings of relief.
Fink
(3-4, 2 RBI) and
Loper
(3-for-5, 3 runs) combined for six of KU's 15 hits.
McCardell,
Costello
and Kranz
had two hits each, while
Craig,
Costello
and
Stricker drove in two runs
apiece.
SUN 5/21 –
Kutztown 7, West Chester 4 –
Kutztown remained alive in the North Atlantic Regional, defeating
West Chester, 7-4, to force a decisive Game 11. Kutztown was led
by Rausch,
who was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Stricker
was 2-for-4 with two runs, a home run and three RBI.
Rummel
(6-3), working on two-days rest, pitched 7.2 innings, allowing five
hits and four runs with six strikeouts for the win.
McCardell
pitched a scoreless ninth to record
his 13th save of the year bettering both his single-season record,
while eclipsing the career mark of 16.
West Chester 14
Kutztown 3 – Kutztown
University’s baseball season came to a close with a 14-3 loss to
West Chester in the championship game of the NCAA Division II North
Atlantic Regional. Kutztown, which set a school record with 44
victories this season, saw its bid for its fourth trip to the
national tournament falls one game short. The Golden Rams jumped
out to an early lead and never looked back. West Chester took a 4-0
lead after the fifth inning, then broke it open with four runs in
the sixth, three in the seventh and three in the ninth.
McCardell
had a solo homer in the sixth and
Rausch
and Dan
Gavlick (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee)
had RBI singles in the eighth to account for KU’s runs.
Craig
was 3-for-5 to lead KU. In his
final career plate appearance,
Fink
was hit by a pitch, his school-record
24th of the season.

NCAA Championships (at Emporia, KS) —
Alison Maurer (sr.
Lewisberry/Northern York)
placed fourth in the hammer throw to earn All-America honors at the
NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships.
Maurer’s
next-to-last throw in the finals was
180-1, a personal best. The fourth-place finish gave
Maurer
her second career All-America honor,
after finishing seventh at last year’s championship in the event.
Cecelia Barnes (Cal. St.-Bakersfield) won the national title with a
throw of 193-6.
Maurer
was one of four Golden Bear athletes
to compete at nationals.
Christine Procopio
(sr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills)
also took part in the hammer throw, finishing 10th
with a mark of 168-9.
Laura Kline (jr.
Reading/Reading) placed 15th
in the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles with a time of
1:02.56.
Tony Hegedus (jr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh)
placed 19th
in the men’s 400 hurdles prelims with a time of 54.31. The top
eight finishers advanced to the finals.
