Cross Country

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 9/30 — at Paul Short Invitational

       M: 4th/25: The men's cross country team placed 4th in the open division at the Paul Short Invitational with 179 points.  Ithaca finished first with 88 points.  Muhlenberg was second with 94 points and Dickinson was third with 124 points.  Pat Bone (jr. Preasville/Central Bucks West) was Kutztown's top finishers, placing eighth overall in a time of 26:16 in the 8K race.  Joe Haughey (sr. Richboro/Council Rock South) placed 15th in 26:36.  Tony Skiles (so. West Reading/Wyomissing) finished 45th (27:09), Dan Wilde (sr. New Cumberland/Cedar Cliff) was 50th (27:14) and John Pyne (so. Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt) was 61st (27:22). Rounding out Kutztown's top seven were Pat McKeever (jr. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) in 70th (27:35) and Tim Schlappich (fr. Stewartstown/Kennard-Dale) in 75th (27:39).

W: 20th/35: The Kutztown University women's cross country team placed 20th in the invitational group with 510 points, at the Paul Short Invitational.  Princeton finished first with 61 points; The University of Wisconsin was a point behind with 62 for second place.  The University of Tennessee placed third with 115 points.  Stephanie Williams (jr. Harrisburg/Riverside) led the Golden Bears, finishing 72nd with a time of 22:27 in the 6K race.  Joanna Horstmann (so. Downingtown/Downingtown West) placed 93rd with a time of 22:47.  Cheryl Dingman (so. Lansdale/North Penn) ran in 22:57 for 105th, Desiree Bower (sr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) was 114th in 23:07 and Chelsea Thomas (sr. Sellersville/Pennridge) was 126th in 23:31.  Rounding out Kutztown’s top seven were Maureen Watson (fr. Walnutport/Allentown Central Catholic) in 155th (23:37) and Jolene Collins (fr. Palmyra/Palmyra) in 193rd (24:24).  The Golden Bear women competed in the Women's Invitational Division, which included the Division I schools along with the ranked Division II and III school's.  Kutztown is currently ranked 13th in Division II.

Last Week’s Action

WED 9/27 — Shippensburg 4, Kutztown 1 - Shippensburg scored three second-half goals to break a 1-1 halftime tie and defeat Kutztown, 4-1.  The Lady Raiders took an early lead on an unassisted goal at 1:22 into the first half.  Kelley Healey (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) scored for KU with 7:46 remaining in the half to make it 1-1.  The Raiders broke the tie 1:34 into the second half, then added two insurance goals later for the 4-1 final.  Sam Flowers (jr. Souderton/Souderton) had 12 saves for Kutztown.

FRI 9/29 — KUTZTOWN 7, SETON HILL 0 - Healey and Lauren Solley (fr. Oley Valley/Oley Valley) each scored two goals en route to a 7-0 win over Seton Hill.  Mandi Turner (sr. Sumneytown/Upper Perkiomen) put KU on the board at the 14:08 mark to get the night started.  Healey scored at the 24:08 mark to put the Golden Bears up by two.  In the second half, Carrie Healey (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River North), younger sister of K. Healey, scored just five minutes into the half.  Kelley scored her second goal five minutes after that.  Heather Hoxter (jr. Parkesburg/Octorara) scored for Kutztown, off an assist from K. Healey, at the 44:22 mark to give the Golden Bears a 5-0 lead.  Solley scored her first goal of the night at the 65:50 mark. With time winding down, Solley scored off a corner with nine seconds left in the contest.  Kutztown out shot Seton Hill 31-4.  Flowers started in net for KU and finished with three saves.  Amy Dalpiaz (fr. Harpursville, NY/Harpursville) played the final 10 minutes and had one save in goal.

SAT 9/30-SUN 10/1 — at Bucknell Invitational

t-11th/14 – Kutztown tied for 11th at the Bucknell Invitational.  Bucknell took first place with a two-day score of 632.  Lehigh was second with 633 and Siena placed third with 641.  The Golden Bears tied with Allegheny, shooting 701 on the par 70 course.  Tristin Suzenski (sr. Pottstown/St. Pius X) was Kutztown’s top player, finishing 32nd, 88-83-171.  Bethany Adams (so. Schnecksville/Parkland) tied for 38th, 87-87-174 and Holly Shubilla (sr. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) tied for 41st, 87-88-175.  Rounding out the Golden Bears’ top five were Angela Petak (jr. Brockway/Brockway) tied for 61st, (88-93-181) and Lauren Foulke (so. Kempton/Kutztown) tied for 68th, 91-95-186.

WED 9/27 — California (PA) 3, Kutztown 2 - California scored two goals just over two minutes apart to come from behind and defeat Kutztown, 3-2.  The Vulcans scored the game's first goal 3:23 into the first half.  KU tied it when Jarrett Cutsler's (fr. Doylestown/Central Bucks West) shot was deflected into Cal's net by a CUP defender.  KU took the lead at the 63:54 mark, when Cutsler scored again off a pass from Rusty Chapel (fr. Topton/Brandywine).  Cal tied it at the 75:04 mark, then took the lead at the 77:41 mark.  Ryan Kratz (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) had 13 saves for Kutztown.

SAT 9/30 — BLOOMSBURG 1, KUTZTOWN 0 - Bloomsburg scored late in the first half to defeat Kutztown, 1-0.  Bloomsburg scored at the 35:42 mark.  The Huskies out shot Kutztown 15-6.  Kratz had eight saves in net for the Golden Bears.

Last Week’s Action

WED 9/27 — Kutztown 2, Clarion 1 (OT) - Angela Corrado scored the game-winning goal with 20 seconds left in the first overtime to lift Kutztown to a 2-1 win at Clarion.  Corrado netted the game winner off a pass from Diana Hopper (fr. New York, NY/Ramapo (NJ)) to complete the come-from-behind win.  Clarion took the lead 13 minutes into the first half and would hold it until late in regulation.  Michelle Flick (fr. Montoursville/Montoursville) scored an unassisted goal at the 85:34 mark to send the game to OT.  Nicole Rodweller (sr. Easton/Easton) had 10 saves for Kutztown.

SAT 9/30 — KUTZTOWN 1, BLOOMSBURG 0 - Kim Kelty (jr. Levittown/Neshaminy) scored mid-way through the second half to lift Kutztown to a 1-0 win over Bloomsburg.  Kelty scored the only goal of the contest at the 67:00 mark off an assist from Mallary Kamen (sr. Lancaster/Manheim Twp.) Rodweller had three saves in net for the Golden Bears en route to the shut out.

SAT 9/30-SUN 10-1  — at ITA Regional (at Bloomsburg)

The men’s tennis team started its season at the ITA Regional, hosted by Bloomsburg.  In the doubles “A” bracket, the #2 seeded team of Santiago Baquerizo (so. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) and Lukas Labitsch (so. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) defeated their opponent in the first round, 8-1 and in the quarterfinals 9-7.  Baquerizo and Labitsch will continue in the semifinals on Monday.  The duo of Rubens Vianna (jr. Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) and Somdeep Appineni (sr. Hyderabad, INDIA) lost in the first round, 8-6.  In the doubles “B” bracket, the team of Arpit Sharma (fr. Kolkata, INDIA) and Joel Irwin (fr. Thorndale/Bishop Shanahan) won in the first round, 8-0, and then lost in the quarterfinals, 8-5.  In the singles “A” bracket, Baquerizo, ranked #4, won in the first round, 6-1, 6-2, in the second round, 7-5, 6-2 and in the quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-1, 10-7.  Baquerizo will continue in the semifinals on Monday.  Appineni lost in the first round, 6-2, 6-0.  Labitsch and Vianna each won in the first round, both winning 6-0, 6-1, and then lost in the second round.  Labitsch lost 7-6, 6-2 and Vianna lost 6-3, 6-3.  In the singles “B” bracket, Sharma had a bye in the first round, won in the second round, 8-0 and lost in the quarterfinals, 8-4.  Irwin won in the first and second rounds, 6-1, 6-1 and 8-6, and then lost in the quarterfinals, 7-1.

TUE 9/26 — East Stroudsburg 3, Kutztown 2 - Kutztown suffered its first lost in the PSAC East, losing to East Stroudsburg in five games. Game scores were 30-32, 30-28, 15-30, 30-26, 15-7.  Sarah Brandon (sr. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) notched 20 kills and five blocks.  Shelby Bunting (sr. Green Lane/Pennridge) added six kills and eight blocks.  Dani Witherite (sr. PA Furnace/State College) had 11 kills and 26 digs.  Austin Kinney (so. Landisville/Hempfield) dished out 35 aces and 22 digs.

THU 9/28 — KUTZTOWN 3, WILMINGTON 0 - Kutztown cruised to a 3-0 win over visiting Wilmington College.  Game scores were 30-19, 30-8 and 30-25.  Witherite led the attack with 12 kills.  She added five digs.  Krystalee George (sr. Wescosville/Emmaus) had four kills and six blocks, while Ashlie Molloy (so. Allentown/Parkland) had 12 digs and five assists.  Kinney had 18 assists and seven digs for KU, which improved to 14-3 with the win.
